I joined Minecraft about 2 weeks ago, and I really wonder what was it like before? I know a "1.4" version was released 2 days ago, but how was the 1.0 version? Or even the 0.5 one? If you could describe in details it would be simply amazing.
there's a program called MC nostalgia where can get any version of the game. so if you really want a feel for what the game was like before you should check that out

it's a bit difficult to describe. There is no 0.5. I first played it in Alpha 1.2.5. Some key differences:
No redstone repeaters, pistons, trapdoors, and quite a few other mechanisms. You could keep stuff in the crafting area of your inventory. There weren't as many foods, and they directly healed your health, which didn't regenerate. No potions or enchantments. Terrain was more interesting but IMHO had less variety. No Shears, instead sheep dropped wool when you hit them, and never regrew it. Back then, Friendly mobs despawned, but they also spawned at night and more frequently; they spawned on any grass that was lit up to a certain level, so at night you could find clusters of passive mobs around torches. Skeletons were a bit more of a threat, in that they strafed around the player, and they shot arrows differently than they do now; as did the player; at the time there was no Bow pull mechanic. Right-click shot an arrow instantly, meaning you could machine gun. Bows also had no durability. Food didn't stack, there was only one kind of wood and one kind of tree, far fewer decorative blocks, fences had a hitbox that was a full block, there were no fencegates, no wolves, no weather, no maps, etc. I could go on.
The terrain has changed drastically. Also, there is more new structures such as pyramids, mine shafts and strongholds, that weren't in the game before.
The number system for minecraft updates is odd, so it's not what you would think. It started out as 0.0.1 around 3 years ago, and then went to 0.30. It then went to Indev and Infdev, which you can get info about on the wiki. After it left Infdev it went to Alpha, which were versions 1.0.0 to 1.2.6
After that was beta, which was from update 1.0.0 again to minecraft 1.0 which was the full release. In between beta and full release they were numbered beta 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc. up to 1.9 and then to full release 1.0
Now we're starting from 1.0 and going up again.
The main differences between now, and let's say, beta 1.2
No hunger bar
No EXP bar, which also means no enchanting.
Structures such as strongholds and NPC villages didn't exist
The End dimension didn't exist
Food didn't stack, and there were less types of food
Emeralds didn't exist
There was no animal breeding. Back then animals would respawn after you killed them, but they no long do.
Several biomes didn't exist, such as the swamp, jungle, and mushroom biomes
There were less mobs. No Enderman, golems, snow golems, villagers, blazes, magma slimes, wither skeletons, wolves, ocelots.
No bosses either
Brewing wasn't implemented
No sprinting
You would have to punch sheep to get their wool. (lolwut?) shears weren't implemented
Also, sheep didn't grow their wool back
That's a pretty good list of things that weren't in many beta versions
Another thing you can do is look up some of the old Lets Play videos on You Tube, from some of the long term LPers. There's quite a few who have been doing it since Alpha. Look for ones that are more than a year old. Just remember, don't assume something you see in those older videos still works that way, because a lot has changed.
Seeing as you joined 2 weeks ago, I don't think MC nostalgia will make any sense to you. Go on the minecraft wiki and look at all the items you're interested in and their history.

To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.
Unfortunetly, if you have started playing now, its hard to explain because minecraft has changed so much that it will seem a little weird if you saw it from awhile ago.Its hard for me to remember it sometimes. Plus everyone was new so everyone loved it anyway. Minecraft isn't as exciting in my opinion today but still is VERY fun to play. Not sure if its because i have played it for a wile now or if its just not as good. Hope i did not confuse you but lets just say it was a lot different. Anyways enjoy it and happy mining!
-1.3.2 made the world slightly more interesting with new temples and trading
-1.2.5 added new wood colors and extended the height limit
-1.1 did something I don't remember
-1.0 added a little to the terrain generator, added the end, and a bunch of other stuff
-Beta 1.8 butchered the terrain and added a few minor reasons to explore (of course, it took away a huge reason)
-Beta 1.7.3 added pistons
-Beta 1.6.6 added trapdoors and fixed bugs that it created
-Beta 1.5 added weather
-Beta 1.4 added wolves
Those are the biggest things I can remember. In my opinion, the game got better until 1.8 where it sharply declined (seriously, terrain SUCKS) and slowly got slightly better until where it is at now. IMO, 1.2.5 is about on par with 1.7.3. 1.3.2 is slightly better than 1.7.3, and 1.4 is slightly better than 1.3.2.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
Minecraft hasn't changed much at all from Classic (the original version), except that the terrain is 1000x better and a MASSIVE amount of cool stuff has been added, about 90% of it totally optional if for some reason you don't like it.

Current terrain "sucks" compared to Beta, but current terrain is "about on par with [Beta] 1.7.3". Conclusion: 1.7.3 terrain sucked.
Terrain Nazi's. Gotta love their logic. XD

I don't know how you didn't get that. I'm obviously talking about the update, not the terrain.

Back when I joined we had indev and the world was confined to a box. The only multiplayer was creative mode. Water would flow out from a point forever, flood filling any available area. Many an underground base was forever flooded as a result. The only way to 'easily' remove water was via sponge blocks which would destroy all the water within two blocks of them. Texture packs had to be directly applied by replacing the files in the minecraft.jar The only creatures in the game were sheep, pigs, zombies, skeletons spiders and creepers. Zombies dropped feathers. Wheat seeds were obtained by plowing grass blocks. Half slabs were the only way to make stairs. Fire spread forever. There was no smooth shading on the lighting. Armor would protect you less as it wore out. (And probably a bunch of stuff I'm forgetting.)

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
The best way to get a good feeling of what the game was about would probably be to use the alpha version halloween update. This was the one that probably presented the best mid-point between the indev creative mode, and what we currently have. Of course, any update after redstone was added can probably give you an idea of what the early terrain and mechanics looked like. Even for those who played those versions, it can still be fun to go back and tinker with pre-piston redstone, or minecart tracks using old booster designs.
The biggest change though was beta 1.8 with the introduction of stamina, structures, and new combat mechanics, which is why you have some who are still running around complaining how everything was so much better back in the old days.
i played the game indev but bought it in alpha. the core game hasn't changed, the sandbox build whatever you want, little or huge, but it was simpler back then. there were less things you could do, less blocks to work/play with, and you had to make all your own goals since the game had no wither and no enderdragon to work towards.
half the peple that whine about the game's mechanics getting "too complicated" or the updates "going over the top" i think are just nostalgic for the older patches, nostalgic about the feeling they got when they first started playing the game and were discovering new things.
I started playing in mid-Alpha. (More than 2 YEARS ago.) The game has improved immensely since then. Do NOT listen to the whiners saying "1.8 rooind evrythin!!!!!!!!! TERAINE SUXS!!!!!!!1" because they are on a nostalgia trip and they can't deal with change..

Nostalgic for a game xD It happens when you love someone and you miss him(or her) but this is a game.. You guys are funny xP
the meaning of nostalgia doesn't only apply to missing someone you love or care about; that's only one of the definitions. nostalgia can also be a yearning for previous times or circumstances that were considered happier/better.
Im just really curious xD

Yes, there were many new features added recently, but the overall gameplay has not changed much.
Probably the most noticable change between early versions of minecraft and the latest release is the terrain.
