1.7 was the peak of the minecraft parabola. 1.8(where a new developer took charge) sent minecraft down a different "adventure" path. (while notches' design was lone survival. and the goal to aim to make life easier) while jeb's design is more about wandering and finding things.
So Minecraft as most know it is dead(and a new one rises)
*this also makes a larger plane for modding though, allowing all the new and bland stuff to be branched out.
The answer to the thread title, is Minecraft dead?
Short answer: no.

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...
its the way of the universe .. nothing stays fresh and original for ever, eventually even the most amazing things in life become stale and boring, EVERYTHING... even life its self, that's why life ends, so that it won't become boring as hell.
I agree with you SethBlue it just seems like minecraft isnt minecraft anymore i think they are pushing it to far i have been playing since alpha 1.1 i have seen lots of updates in my time i liked the original minecraft i dont like how they are making it so realistic now realism is for real life if you want to play realistic games get out there and do whatever you want to do.
I do agree somewhat, but the originality is slighty absent from the get go... I can't name a day where i am not playing a server with plugins or a modified version of MC. I am not picking sides though, the game can adapt in so many different ways so it's what ever.
Has nobody here ever heard of MCNostalgia? I mean honestly, even though I have just made an account on this website I too have been around since Alpha, and I have seen the rise of some very useful programs. Don't like the new updates? Use the MCNostalgia program to bring back your self opinionated 'Good ol' days.'
Instead of trying to inflict your opinion on the rest of us, how about you just backtrack your own client. Poof. Done. You're back on alpha and Mojang doesnt have to do a damn thing.
I must admit, some features that have been implimented are not great, and some people may disagree with me. But for adventure map makers like myself, this game keeps getting better. Remember how bad custom maps used to be? Pretty much the only tool we had was redstone, and back then it was buggy, and without pistons and note blocks or anything, that wasnt amazingly useful at the time.
What I'm saying is people will disagree with posts like these, and people will agree. But its better for everyone to keep these opinions to yourself, otherwise all it will create is a thread totally dedicated to a massive agruement, and nobody wants that.
The world is pretty much indifferent to individuals. And so is Mojang.
You see, Mojang is a company, and Minecraft its signature product. If Mojang is to stay in business, it needs to attract new customers. That includes new customers to Minecraft, which you and I are not. We've already voted with our pocketbooks, and decided "minecraft has enough features to put down our $20 and buy it."
As a result, it is constantly adding new features to the game, hoping to attract new customers who, for whatever reason, have decided there isn't enough features to make buying the game worthwhile. For some it's mobs. For others it's easier modding. For yet others, it's better control over a new creative world. For whatever reason, they haven't been sold yet, and the next addition will be the one to do so.
The chances are very good for every addition or change you dislike, there are people who love it, and people are indifferent to it. The chances are also very good that you, as someone who's dissatisfied with a change, are in the minority. There are certainly changes in the pipeline I'd prefer weren't there, resources I think mojang is wasting on features I'll never use, at the expense of features I want in the game. Part of growing up is realizing that you can't get everything you want, especially at the expense of everyone else.
You can get every single minecraft jar Mojang has released from the wiki. No mods needed.
edit: Never mind... I just double checked. They're not there.
Go online and search minecraft version changer. It has the capability of backdating your jar to any version even the snapshots, which you can then copy and have at your disposal. And then all you have to do to go back to the current version is force update.
Well, for one thing back then the game was in beta so they were focusing on content and not much on bug fixes. Now, since the games has tons of content, they are adding small amounts of content and tons of bug fixes to polish the game. Btw, I dont think a game that has over 8 million players and counting is dead.
I understand where your coming from SethBlue. I started playing Minecraft just before the nether was released. From then to around the end of last summer was the best year of Minecraft I have ever had. The feeling I would get when playing multiplayer with people I didn't even know and had just met is now nearly unattainable for me. I didn't even care if was just sitting their and chatting it was just fun to talk to everyone and enjoy the good old server life when everyone talked and everyone had fun hearing and talking about peoples stories about Minecraft. I just don't find that feeling anymore when playing Minecraft. I feel, and don't think I'm the only one who feels this way, that Minecrafts server have become to out of whack and odd. It's almost like that every server has to be big and flashy with all the fancy plugins and all coolest games like the hunger games. Have people who played before 1.7.3 forgotten what servers were like back then? Have they forgotten the golden days when everyone enjoyed the servers together and enjoyed the small little town life of Minecraft servers? I haven't played Minecraft in a long time and to be quite frank it makes me sad because I love Minecraft. The problem is that everything has changed and Minecraft players aren't the same enjoyable players they once were. Servers aren't the friendly town life no plugin servers they use to be. I just hope people can see how everything use to be and how friendly everyone was and learn from it. Maybe even try to be a little more like it use to be. Someone start a server that is friendly town life. Not necessarily no plugins but just drop all the unnecessary plugins like world edit, LWC, and grief protection. Yes, a server might get a griefed a bit but on the servers that use to be if one person got griefed not only did he feel the sadness but other people felt it with them because everyone has been griefed before wether they know it or not. I just want to see people go back to the old ways and really just enjoy themselves.
I want to just give an example of what Minecraft players have turned into:
Ok, so lets say an experienced Minecraft player who has played for a year or two has found a server that doesn't have many players but has a reasonable amount (15-25). He applies for the server or just joined the server. He sees that the spawn isn't built well, that the houses people have built are eccentric and decides to ditch the server.
The point I am trying to get across here is that if you join a server that looks unappealing don't ditch on it right away. Stick with the server for a while, see how the other players are. If you do that then decided to leave alright at least you gave it a shot, but when you do that at least it gives you chance to see the core of the server. It gives you a chance to see how nice that server might actually be. So you decide to stick with the server and you remember something you found unappealing when you first joined the server. Take some time and see if you can't change it and help better improve the server.
This are just my views and hope that some others may share the same views also.
I just don't what the small thread that holds Minecraft back to its roots to be cut. I want it to be repaired and built back to its former glory that it had when it first hit the Beta milestone.
