I am both thrilled and terrified by this. I could not tell you how many times I've retreated to the over world after provoking the zombie pig men. this is an interesting concept, indeed.
you know what would be fun? Putting a nether portal in a dungeon that makes all the mobs go through the portal. Oh that poor sucker that finds that portal. hehehehehee

It's my understanding that ever since the SSP + SMP merge that other dimensions, if they have been made, will remain loaded all the time to some degree like a server. Perhaps I'm wrong, changes keep coming at us right and Left these days.
I'm pretty sure they don't stay loaded. I run a server and I've noticed on just about every occation that the Nether Wart right by everybody's portal is amost never fully grown, meaning the chunks are only loaded when someone is in the Nether.

But I find it strange how entities can be automatically ported back after they enter the portal. Maybe it only loads things that are inconveniences.

Yes. That was the problem of netherwart before we were allowed to farm it in other dimensions... you used to be forced to stay in the nether and see nethwewart growing... really really boring since the nether doesnt have much to do. I use to make my wart farm near my blaze famr so at least i could do both things at the same time.
I think they don't stay through not because they move too much(I'm trying with cows), but because they move too little. Bats seem to go through willingly(I used spawner eggs) and blazes like in the video. Passive mobs seem to dwaddle around more.
Edit: minecarts worked, although the first time I walked in the nether the cows seemed to be 'ghosts' until I re-entered.
I was pretty sure that minecarts were the way to take them away from the portal so they dont tp back, the problem is to find a way to take them where you want and automathicly get rid of the minecarts... To do things manually its not that bad, at least we have a way... its crazy to see cows in the nether! =P

Is this true of the nether spawn point? I can see Bukkit or Essentials or Multiverse keeping minimal chunks around the designated nether spawn point loaded. But not the chunks around Joe Blow's portal off in the sticks somewhere.

Now you're getting into the realm of modded minecraft. I can't say how they handle that. I don't think the Nether has a spawn area in vanilla SMP, you just arrive at the portal. Not sure what you would gain to offset tying up server resources to keep an area loaded no one is in. It would be a trade off of convenience versus resources.
One thought that I had was that a nether portal that was linked to a portal that is kept loaded by a player would act like a player itself and so allow mobs to pass through regardless of whether another player is on the other side. I don't know if they have implemented this though.
If it doesn't then what happens to the stuff you throw through a portal when the chunk on the other side isn't loaded? Is it kept in some sort of teleporter buffer until you go through at which point it appears along with you?
With the chunks loaded on the other side, imagine the chaos that can cause, nether mobs spawning all over the place on the overworld, that could be kinda dangerous but i guess that would be the risk of opening a portal in the future, who knows.
I think that might have some potential for custom maps, having a portal with a spawner on the other side letting mobs cross and make some kind of invation simulation...
i think its a great new asset to minecraft full blast i mean you can now have sheeps and chickens and cows in the nether with out cheating so its great for servers if you like to live secluded in the nether in a castle and now you have a food source animals and you can have villagers in there to hope you liked my opinion peace
"spawning all over the place in the overworld" is a bit of an exaggeration. They'd still have to walk through a portal to appear in the overworld and then only at an open portal. To stop it you'd just have to close the portal that they're coming through.
maybe a little.. but remember what happens when you hit a pigman, all of them are going to come after you, follow you through the portal and chase you, i dont see that as a good thing.

You could have a village in there.. if you can destroy the bedrock ceiling, unless you mean just dragging some there to hide them so the population cap lowers again to breed more. Now that I think about it, can iron golems fit through?
It's cool to have pigmen chase you through and kill you in the overworld. If that's what's bad about it then you just have to not hit pigmen.
Another thing i tought later (after posting for the last time) is that the change of dimensions (going from the nether to the overworld or backwards) might break the "tracking" so they become neutral as they cross, i should test this things and see what happens.
This is my cow farm in a fortress so I can refill my milk buckets whenever I run out from fighting wither skeletons:

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Not sure, maybe if you just dissaprear when you cross the protal, they stop tracking you since they "dont see you" anywhere.
