Here is an idea; Silverfish Mandibles (or something) that can be crafted with sticks and feathers into special arrows that can shoot through one block thick walls. I dunno, just pulling things out of my ****.
i wish i had an **** that popped out good ideas.

im too lazy to tink of something better to put here so i will put this. cheesefingerchickenpizzalemon wow why are you still reading this is is not amazing, not special, not all that original or even cool?
They're just making Minecraft more and more of a challenge!
Lots of players think that some things add difficulty to the game and add challenge to it but most of it is annoyance not true danger. Thats my opinion about silverfishes on caves. Silverfish where suposed to be mobs for a specific area, the stronghold, making them "special" but there we go..
Imagine yourself on a cave trying to get rid of a silverfish and unleashing a silverfish hell, i dont realy see the difficulty there,

^This. A million times this. It doesn't make the game more challenging, it's just an annoyance. Much like the hunger bar.

You see it as an annoyance, I see it as a nice little scare, much like a skeleton sniping you. What annoys me is how it only generates in the extreme humps biome still.
I really wish I knew a way to mod. Then I could tweak the generation to meet my wants. (emeralds/silverfish everywhere).
I wonder if the purpose of this is to make the EH biome more risky to mine in, since it has more caves than any other biome. I don't really see any other reason why they are tied to the EH biome.
I gotta admit I'm in the boat of this being not really a challenge -- you're less likely to hit silverfish than iron ore. This means it *kind of* works, but it's unlikely to be a challenge. If you increase the rate of silverfish blocks, then you run into the issue that it becomes too annoying.
There can possibly be a middle ground where it's just right, but it would take much experimentation to reach.
Though this is a simple opinion formed from my analysis in game, and my real opinion might differ -- but I'm not playing true survival in the snapshots until the official thing is released. I don't want to spoil it.
silverfish arnt a challenge to begin with, one of the easier mobs to kill. The annoying thing will be when you mine 1 silverfish block then another one breaks under you and you fall into lava. Thats the only danger and it seems kind of like a random way to die.
Assuming they keep the spawning for "support" silverfish the same, it worries me....They really should alter that support spawn rate so you could have, say, no more than 15 spawned in 3 minutes by damaging silverfish. Otherwise you have the possibility of IMPOSSIBLE hoards to deal with.
I think adding silverfish as a common trap mob everywhere just takes the "special" away from it. They were mainly Stronghold mobs and they were fine the way they were. It's fine to add a few here and there, but to make them a possible cause for infestation in just about any random (EH) cave is both a downgrade and an annoyance.
There are a lot of miners out there who couldn't care less for mobs. Not everyone wants to find enemies every second of their game, and especially not industrial mod users.
I personally would suggest - considering Dinnerbone is thinking of adding terrain generator sliders - further tweaking options for map creation: toggling specific mobs and mob behavior (finally a way to disable creepers griefing your creations), among many things, would be the perfect way of catering to everyone's tastes.
Praise be to Spode.

Here's hoping that the block populator will take care of 1.3 worlds!
