WARNING: THIS TOPIC CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS ABOUT THE NEW BOSS COMING UP IN MINECRAFT 1.4. IF YOU DON'T WANT YOUR MINECRAFT 1.4 EXPERIENCE SPOILED, DO NOT READ.
DarkArtemisFowl here, to bring you a side-by-side comparison of the first Minecraft Boss introduced in the 1.9 Pre-releases, the Enderdragon. Versus the new Minecraft 1.4 Boss, the Wither.
Comparisons:
Enderdragon
Introduction: Beta 1.9 Pre-releases 4(Disabled) and 6(Official)
Dimension: The End
Spawning Requirements: Enter the End for the first time.
Recurring: No, only spawns once (Due to a bug, very rarely two Enderdragons may spawn in The End in SMP)
Health: 200 Health Points
Attack: 10 Damage Points
Attack Type: See 'Movement'
Knockback: Very Strong
Movement: Flying, flies high above the player and then charges at the player
Specials: Gets healed by Ender Crystals on top of Obsidian Pillars.
Drops: 20,000 EXP, Portal to the Overworld (placed, not removable), Enderdragon Egg (placed).
Wither
Introduction: 12w34a(Disabled), 12w36a(Spawnable), and Minecraft 1.4(Official)
Dimension: Any, assumed 'native dimension' The Nether
Spawning Requirements: 'Utility Mob Style.' Place 4 Soulsand in a T Shape, place Wither Skeleton Skulls on top of the upper body of the soulsand.
Recurring: As many as you can create.
Health: 300 Health Points
Attack: 3 Damage Points on Easy, increased by 2 Damage per level of difficulty added.
Attack Type: Constantly fires Wither Skulls from the extra heads it has, see 'Attack' for the damage of these. Wither Skulls explode on contact, much smaller blast radius than TNT or Creepers. Once hit the player, gives the "Wither" effect, poisons the player until dead, and gives the corresponding HP to the Wither. Will not give HP to the Wither if the player's Hunger points are below nine. Attacks all types of mobs except for undead (Skeletons, Zombies, 'Wither' mobs, and Zombie Pigmen).
Knockback: Depends on blast radius of Wither Skulls, usually Weak to Normal.
Movement:
-Calm: Moves around on ground, cannot fly nor jump over one block.
-Aggro'd: Will fly at the same height as the player.
-Special Armor: Will add the Wither Armor (See 'Specials' below) but will not allow it to fly.
Specials: "Wither" effect (see 'Attack Type' above), when the Wither drops below half health it will gain "Wither Armor," allowing it to deflect arrows, but cannot fly while wearing this armor. Also slowly heals itself, even if no "Wither" effect has been dealt to a mob.
Drops: 20 EXP, Nether Star (1).
My Thoughts:
Already from comparing the statistics, the Wither is much more powerful than the Enderdragon, beating it in Health Points, Attack Types, Specials, and in a way, also Drops. The Wither is an interesting boss, since you can spawn it anywhere but its native home seems to be the Nether.
Ultimately since the Wither also has the abilities to send a constant barrage of exploding Wither Skulls combined with its special abilities, the Wither may just be the hardest thing ever introduced in Minecraft since Creepers. And that's saying something .
Your thoughts on the Wither-Enderdragon comparison? I personally think that the Enderdragon is CAKE compared to the Wither.
While the wither boss is cool and all, and he does seem tough, players may have advantage's if they can choose where to spawn it, and then again, I liek cake.

Results: Defeated. Still killed me quicker than I regened health.
Default Diamond Armor + Sword, Bow (64 Arrows), Enchanted Golden Apple, Splash Potion of Healing II, Potion of Regeneration
Results: Won. The E. Golden Apple was the key, it saved me more than once. After he couldn't fly because of his Wither Armor, I simply struck him down.
Overall: You'll need practically endgame equipment in order to defeat him, otherwise you're dead. On the bright side, though, after defeating him you're awarded a Nether Star, which is key in Beacons - yet another Endgame item.
Since you are able to spawn the wither, couldn't he be killed easy? Just make a box just big enough for him to be spawned in then go to where his feet would be and remove one block so you can keep hitting him while he can't shoot and damage you at all. Haven't tested this, but seems like it would work pretty easy, and if it does... infinite nether stars as long as you can keep spawning.
Or you could just create an obsidian box and drop 5 tnt in.
Default Diamond Armor+Sword, Strength II potion, Instant Health II splash potion, milk, ordinary bow, 256 arrows
Results: Won easily. The bow went unused. Just drink the strength potion, charge him down, and throw the health potion when your health gets low. Drink the milk when he's dead, and boom, you killed something the same way you kill everything else in the game.
Now, I know that a lot of people have been complaining that nothing is challenging in Minecraft, but this... is still pathetic. He's a gear check. Your victory is determined by your equipment, which leaves no room for a fighting strategy (not like the Wither gives a chance for strategy; he spams skulls more than a kid would).

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
He breaks a 3x3 hole through any material if he feels like it (except maybe bedrock...). However, I have found that Iron Golems attack the Wither. He normally flies out of range of them, but if you spawn him in the middle of a mountain, three Iron Golems can usually kill it, as long as he doesn't break out and fly away.
i think fighting the wither in the nether would be easyest becasue theres nothing for him to put the wither effect on to heal (eccept yourself and the rare magma cubes and ghasts)
He eats through all blocks except bedrock, and in creative I saw him phase right through a bedrock tomb

My avatar is a two tailed fox named Miles "Tails" Prower. He may only be 8 years old,but he is a highly skilled engineer. He stands 2'7" tall, and can use his tails to fly short distances, and run at near supersonic speeds.
Though, has anyone tested fighting him with no armor and just an iron sword, out in the open? Quite the hardness, wouldn't it be?
The point for the Wither is gathering somewhere between middlegame and endgame materials, armor and weapons, in order to actually defeat him fairly. Besides, try fighting multiple Withers at once. I guarantee it's a blast :D.
The enderdragon is just bad. Its clearly not and likely will never be finished. It'll just stay as some half finished thing no one cares about.
The ender dragon should take tips from the black final dragon in psx kingsfield 1.
The healing spheres are just dumb. Now if they were long range lasers we could be talking a more interesting battle.
Agreed. Also I think the enderman in the End were supposed to make it a more complicated battle - please. The Enderdragon is what you're focused on and it usually flies higher than the player. So not that much of a chance you're gonna look to an Enderman. Besides, if you're not feeling safe against them, a pumpkin on your head guarantees anti-enderman status.
Just build a decently sized arena made out of End stone away from other mobs or animals and it's a simple 1v1 fight since you can make the arena and area for the Wither fight it can be extremely easy, the Ender dragon fight isn't really hard just annoying.
I was using a regen potion, diamond armour and a smite IV sword, and the Wither died quite easily (less than 1 minute of aggressively poking it) if I spawn it just slightly underground. I should probably try seeing if it can be done with just a vanilla diamond sword. Might take a bit longer, which might prove the difference.

SORRY FOR BAD ENGLISH
Yeah, I actually beat the wither in a testrun. But here's what I used:
Default Diamond Armor + Sword, Bow (64 Arrows)
Results: Defeated. He trapped me in a hole he created with explosions and I was done for.
Default Diamond Armor + Sword, Bow (128 Arrows), Potion of Regeneration
Results: Defeated. Still killed me quicker than I regened health.
Default Diamond Armor + Sword, Bow (64 Arrows), Enchanted Golden Apple, Splash Potion of Healing II, Potion of Regeneration
Results: Won. The E. Golden Apple was the key, it saved me more than once. After he couldn't fly because of his Wither Armor, I simply struck him down.
