i like to carry some melon slices and get the hunger bar to four hunger points from full before i eat the steak or pork chop. That way there is no chance of over eating and i usually am watching my hunger bar pretty close so i don't have to eat a melon slice on top of the steak.

Would work but isn't very efficient inventory space wise. I've found that switching the item if you hear the noise (as someone previously said) usually cancels the action.
As best I understand, it can sorta still be wasteful using them that way. I think? .....or maybe not?
There's 2 main counters for this, there's the "food level" counter, which is what you actually see as the hunger bar, and then there's the "saturation level" counter, which you cant see. Saturation is depleted before the hunger bar itself starts to go. You could think of it as a "fullness" counter, so using more filling foods like steaks will mean that it'll take longer before your guy gets hungry again and the meter starts to drop, while eating things like cookies (which have very low saturation) means that you'll be eating them pretty often, because each time it wont take long before the meter starts to go again.
That's how it works, but I cant say for certain what is the most efficient way to use a given food item. I'm surprised that aspect isnt mentioned on the wiki page for it.
i have looked into this and found that if you eat something 1/2 a bar before it would fill your hunger completely (so it seems like your wasting 1/2 bar) it will fill saturation and do nearly as much as it normaly would because it doesnt fill saturation unless it fills your hunger and still has some left

Well there's been a hint of SMP lag in SP since 1.3 came out since they merged the two.
Most likely that is the reason.

You bumped a three year old topic to make some horrible remark about someone's skin?
Anyway, since it's still somewhat relevant, the eating bug will be fixed when 1.9 releases. That should be the end of this.
