Now that 1.3 is officially out and everyone knows about the new trip wires... I thought I would have heard more about them.. Redstone being so intricate.. any new addition to redstone wiring adds whole new levels to devices and machines in Minecraft.
That being said, Im interested in what have you guys done with them so far? Or do think they were just a flop addition to the game?
I use them for home security from mobs. Mobs hits it, it starts a clock and raises a piston "cell". The clocks drives dispenser guns, 2 note blocks and flashes a redstone lamp.
I've been cooking ideas using multiple tripwires and falling gravel and water for some overly and un neededly complex traps for fun, haven't implemented nothing yet though.
I have a lesser version of home security. I just set them up in a square around my entrance(it's a ladder) so that if anything steps on it I'll hear the click.
I have a tripwire trap outside my underground animal farm to stop zombies destroying the door. It works.
I don't think tripwires are flexible as they could be though. The fact that the whole length of the tripwire, including the hooks, must be either in the air or on the ground really restricts its usability. I would also like to be able to have the string attach to the side of a tripwire hook, rather than only being able to attach it to the front.
As it is though, tripwires can be used to send redstone signals across gorges/ravines etc. with little view obstruction. So it is useful.

I found a neat way how: you can move a person/animal on and off of it so it's reusable. Someone probably already came up with this way but I might start using it for things. Too bad redstone unloads when it's too far away. :/
Atleast this takes it long distances instantaneously.
Hell, who even needs repeaters? But this would take a lot of space every time.

That is so pro. :3

The Internet is a big place, friend. I've been places you've n͍̺e̩v̦e̦̰͍͓̩ͅr̜̭̝̬̬͉̤̬ ͙ịm̖͇a͍͇̤͙̥g̤̘i͔͖̤̼̪̬n͖͔̳̬̯e̩̘ḓ͈͔̠̙͇̼̯.͎
So far I've built myself two successful traps using tripwires. Both are set up to look like a simple intersection in a tunnel or dungeon. The first, when you step on the wire, pushes piston down around the creature that triggered it, trapping it and preventing anything from getting by. The second has the same piston concept, except whatever steps on the wire can still walk on the wire, keeping it activated, and setting off the dispensers on either end of the wire. The first dispenser has a stack of zombie eggs, and the other has fire charges. This is the most effective since whatever set off the trap will be set on fire, attacked by zombies, and as the zombies move closer, they activate the wire more, spawning more zombies and fire charges.
A tripwire suspended above a rail track means you can tell the difference between mine carts with and without people in them. (The player is high enough to trip the wire but an empty cart won't.)
We use this to keep empty carts from cluttering up our main rail lines.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.

this is a cool idea, but dont trip wires have a limit of like 26 blocks or something for things to activate them?
Im using it to turn on my portal. I throw an item into a hole, the item gets pushed by water into a hole, the item falls past the trip wire setting it off therefor turning on the portal, and the item then falls into lava.
Its really great, now I dont have to wait 5 minutes for whatever item I threw into the hole to despawn!

I've been here for a loooooooooong time.
