#2: Definitely Alpha. The grass color and the randomness of the beaches give it away.
The screenshots were all taken with 1.3.1.it's interesting to note that now that things are turning towards the "nobody can tell what the **** version each is" the "Old terrain is DA BEST" people have resorted to calling the entire test "stupid" for specious reasons.
The point is that if the shots were taken with the intent of being deliberately ambigious, then the test serves no other purpose than to say "see, none of you know, it's a trick". It depends if the OP was intending to really find out if people can tell the difference, or if ambigious results were desired from the outset. I could find a square of land in alpha that looks just like 1.3.1 (with textures, as above). So if you get it wrong, what does that prove? It doesn't mean anything, it just means that I set out to trick a false response out of you so I can then wave it around like some kind of poor excuse for a cause celebre.
Yes, that may be true, but if you are going to try you should trust at least a little bit the OP. He stated that he was not looking for ambiguous images and I think it is true. And if the difference in the terrain is so big and 1.3.1 terrain is so bad them people should know the basic differences just looking at these images, because after all that is the main intention of the post. We can only know after the OP show us the terrain generation from each of these images, so don´t take it seriously.

If you read my whole post, you would know that I took pictures of the spawn area. The only exception being the 1.3.1 map where I spawned in a jungle, which would have been obviously 1.3.1.
If it looks like they were deliberately made to look the same, it is probably because they look the same. I didn't put in any seeds, I did fly around much beyond just enlarging the map, and I used the first map I made with every version.
Alright. Actually I had to fly a bit in the Beta world because I spawned in an ocean. But what point would there be to post a picture of an ocean?
All that said: I'm happy with what Jeb has done to fix the Terrain Generation. The 1.3.1 Terrain is MUCH nicer than the low point of the 1.0.0 Terrain... I'm actually enjoying it again. I believe that there is much more that can/will be done regarding Terrain Generation in the future, but for now the Terrain options are playable again.
Agreed. I have noticed the 1.3 terrain to be a bit more... exciting?... than previous versions. I've been seeing oodles of crazy mountains and cliffs and all sorts of things. :3

2: Beta...WRONG
3: I was thinking 1.3.1, but not in large biomes
4: Wrong again
Well, I never played too much in old terrain generation so I´m happy I got something right It was a fun experiment and I am little surprised with the results. Looking forward to another experiment >:3
My only problem with the post-BETA land generation was the lack of densely forested mountains. And when complaining about the new land generation, most would post pictures of said forested mountains as an exemple of superior BETA land generation.
However, this has been solved in the last updates, with the jungles and now, with 1.3.1, the higher forests hill. So I don't see any reason to look back at BETA right now.
Also, it might sound wierd, but the absence of large body of water in BETA bothered me.

I'm glad you liked it, and don't be bothered that you got some wrong. This wasn't a contest, and people getting them wrong is just as valid as getting them right. I'm actually glad that so many got most of them wrong because it is so counter-intuitive. A solid, confirmable result that is not what you expected is much more valuable than a result everyone saw coming!

Definitely. My server's new 1.3.1 map spawns in a very dense forest just covered in hills and mountains.
And, yes, my biggest wish during Beta was ocean. Now I just want DEEP oceans peppered with shipwrecks and little desert islands and filled with hostile squids!

I didn't know 1.3 had such interesting terrain when on large biomes. That said, I still prefer beta's ability to make such distinct worlds via seeds unlike now, and I think the majority'll agree that alpha and beta had the best trees.
My two favorite pictures ended up being 1.3.1.
Also, to all the 1.3.1 haters, why don't run the exact same experiment? Lets look at the results of multiple tests, and see if the data is still consistant.

I use the FTB modpack, because it's fun, and extremely convenient.
Only got half right. Honestly though the last picture I thought for sure was 1.3- i mean the beach formation looked steeper than usual, there was a slight splotch on the left, and the water became deep very quickly. But guess I was wrong.
Anyway I honestly don't think the 1.3 terrain is too bad compared to how it was in 1.0. I still wish the grass color was greener, though.
#1: Hard to tell between Beta or 1.3.1. Went with 1.3.1 by how regular the hills look. Yep, those are some very regular hills.
#2: Definitely Alpha. The grass color and the randomness of the beaches give it away. Yep.
#3: Beta by process of elimination. Wrong. So that is an extreme hill in the background. Wasn't sure if it was or wasn't.
#4: Definitely 1.3.1. The "beaches" give it away. Wrong. Now that I look again there's actually what looks like a regular beach hiding behind the trees on the right.
And yet the Alpha screenshot is the only one with a different color of grass, despite all the pictures being of the same kind of biome and 1.3.1 engine. Grass color is determined by the generator.
it's interesting to note that now that things are turning towards the "nobody can tell what the **** version each is" the "Old terrain is DA BEST" people have resorted to calling the entire test "stupid" for specious reasons.
I called it from the beginning. A few screenshots are not enough to tell what's missing from the generator. If one of the screenshots had a gravel beach then it wouldn't really be very difficult to guess which generator, now would it?
Honestly, I don't really like any of these landscapes. Well, I mean #1 would be okay for building on top of the hills, but it's not really interesting. #2 has those really glitchy looking Alpha beaches. I can't really tell if near that waterfall in #3 would be a good place to build without a closer look. #4 isn't suitable for building. What I really liked were the valleys I would find in Beta.
(The current generator has a lot more wrong with it [in my opinion, ofc] than just mountains. I think the biome layout is bland and just results in a quilt of the same repeating biomes over and over. I also dislike the ugly grass colors and flatness of the terrain in general. Either way, read on about the mountains themselves)
...concerning the mountains...
This is a retarded thread, you can't pick a few pictures and base entire assumptions off of them. Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal. Also, you did something with the grass color. In Image 3 it's impossible to get grass that green without being in a jungle biome. The new generator does have mountains that look somewhat like the old mountains, differences are that cool mountains like in image 3 are much less common and much less dramatic. You basically picked a 1.3 seed that resembled what people could get constantly pre-1.8, so it's almost like you're arguing for pre-1.8 using that logic.
^Pretty much sums up my opinions of this thread.
You just took the best/most similar screenshots of 1.3.1 in an attempt to make a selected audience look foolish. These screenshots mean nothing because they're not what you'd see in everyday 1.3.
I didn't know 1.3 had such interesting terrain when on large biomes. That said, I still prefer beta's ability to make such distinct worlds via seeds unlike now, and I think the majority'll agree that alpha and beta had the best trees.
Never heard that opinion before. Mostly because the Alpha and Beta trees still exist except now there are more trees, so it isn't so bland.
And yet the Alpha screenshot is the only one with a different color of grass, despite all the pictures being of the same kind of biome and 1.3.1 engine. Grass color is determined by the generator.
That is correct. What you are forgetting, though, is that Alpha didn't have biomes, and as of... 1.2 was it?... biomes are determined by the x,z coordinates instead of been extracted from the seed at runtime. As a result, Alpha maps that are converted to Anvil instead of MC Region format do not have any biomes, so the grass and leaves are the default green. Try it and see.

1. I assure you that I did not edit the maps or the images in any way. Would you like me to send you the world file?
2. If you had read my post like a non-retarded person would, you would know that I did not pick any seeds at all. I generated one map for each version and took a picture of the spawn region. If the 1.3.1 maps look like pre-Beta 1.8 maps, it is probably because they look alike.
^Pretty much sums up my opinions of this thread.
You just took the best/most similar screenshots of 1.3.1 in an attempt to make a selected audience look foolish. These screenshots mean nothing because they're not what you'd see in everyday 1.3.
Again, this is not true if you tried actually reading my post instead of just forming ungrounded conclusions based on assumptions.
I made a single map per version, no specific seeds, and took a single picture of the spawn region of each.
If they look similar then it is because they look similar. I dare you to try my experiment with the same procedures and find a different result.
And yes, I did have to look around for a couple of the picture. In Alpha I spawned in an ocean. Would you like to see a picture of a flat ocean? I don't think that would help. In 1.3.1 I spawned in a jungle biome. I had to move because the experiment was not to find if people can identify a jungle biome or not, but if they could tell a difference in the terrain between Alpha, Beta, and 1.3.1.
Please note that one does not simply accuse an Eagle Scout of rigging his results.
Also, I might point out that those 1.3.1 screenshots are EXACTLY what I've been seeing every day since the late 1.3 snapshots. If you don't believe me you should check out my 100% Vanilla SMP server. Totally random seed, large biome world, and the spawn area is surrounded by beautiful hills and mountains blanketed in forest.
