If they don't update they don't get new game material, and eventually a modding community that uses a modding API. New mods that come out don't just pop up for 2 versions prior to the one they are making it for. This isn't like a free MMO where you get a bunch of people whining about game content even though they just play it for free. The people whining here are doing it after paying for the game.

You are absolutely right. But, there are currently thousands of mods that work with 1.2.5. And, no where does Mojang state that "when buying our game, you enjoy the current and all future versions of it on the same PC." System requirements change over time.
Also, WoW cost me $60, and another $40 for each of the 3 expansion packs, PLUS $15.00 a month to play. That's hardly a "free mmo"
Its called a snapshot. These are very new and still heavily under development. Wait and see if its fixed in 1.3. Snapshots are meant to have bugs and lagging(especially for Sp turning into Mp)
No it's not. No more so than minecraft already does (you must be online to log in, no?) And no one is shoving anying onto "your game". Don't play online? PC can't handle the game anymore? Simply don't upgrade. I know it sounds shitty, and I have been there too (The Burning Crusade for WoW ran like **** on my old computer), but progress must be made.
Well I don't know about you, but I enjoy both single player and multiplayer. I don't want to run a server all the time because it means people in my hamachi group and depending on how they manage it other people will have access to my game. I play other games using that hamachi group aside from just Minecraft (for legitimacy those games are DoW Soulstorm, Civilization V, and various other strategy games) so I can't just toss the group. So I'm supposed to stay offline at all times unless I'm on another server never getting to use the perks of buying the game for that reason like achievements and my skin. I'll probably be fine regardless of how this actually updates, but I'm still arguing and leaning toward leaving an actual single player mode in the game because I don't always want to be on a server especially if they end up not fixing bugs like the one that I'm still not sure if they've fixed or not, the mob spazzing glitch.

A. I wasn't talking about WoW I'm actually talking about Grand Fantasia, I forgot that you mentioned WoW in your post. I disregarded that because it wasn't relevant because I'm not talking about computer requirements or how the game runs if you had bothered to read my original arguments. When I argued computer requirements it was for the rest of the community saying peoples' computers sucked and I was defending them. My computer is 3 years old and perfectly able to run Minecraft that has nothing to do with me arguing against this change.
B. I'm not saying and not once mentioned anything about a purchase agreement. I was implying that they have a right to argue about the way they want the game to go because they are a paying community. Didn't say it had to happen, but you're basically stating that if we don't like it too bad. Things still have a chance to revert if they get too much negative feedback from the community. Gotta edit this post for my previous statement prior to answering this. *finished editing*
Something I previously mentioned was a toggle option to allow you to be in the world but have the server turned off. Things can still get added, but biased thinkers won't see possible compromises they'll only see that they are right and that adds nothing.
For the multiplayer only players, yeah I guess this would be the best update ever, but the old school singleplayer is destroyed. I think that most old(played since alpha\early beta) legit singleplayer players will hate the update. Because back then multiplayer was a big mess and everyone played singleplayer to enjoy not having any glitches and lag. Now we are forced to have these multiplayer glitches and lag.
I am almost 100% positive that I've been playing longer than you have. MC SP survival got really boring after I had done everything. Even knew updates got boring really fast. So when SMP came out, I was really happy. Even though mobs didn't hurt you, and dropping tools reset durability, I was really happy. Then 1.8 came, which had many flaws, especially the terrain, I stopped playing MC. This new snapshot has me so excited, because they are fixing the terrain again. I have a good PC, so these problems seldom happen, and I'm used to them as I'm more of a SMP person now. The only reason you'd dislike the merge, is if you don't like smp, as you don't have anyone to play with. This merger, will make it so much easier to make SMP mods, as you don't have to port them. It will allow you to play with friends on LAN, and more. This is a requirement for the API, we NEED this to easily create mods. When these bugs are fixed in SMP, they will be fixed in SP. Consider this a "speedbump" in a process that will make the game so much better.
If mojang had fixed most of th bugs before the merge, then the merge would not have happened for years and years. Doing the merge earlier is better than doing it later. The earlier they do the merge, the faster they can squash bugs.
More like if they had fixed the issue of having to merge before the sheer amount of data they have on hand now...

Villagers need to turn into zombies once killed by a zombie... March 24th 2012
It seems to be completely impossible for you to understand, arrogant as you are, that people that do not want to play SMP, don't do it out of a lack of options. Burst your bubble and consider this, strange and alien as it might be to you: It might be a preference!
Singleplayer is hardly ruined, the worst thing I've noticed is rubberbanding (mind you, it's not nearly as bad as it is currently in SMP)
Why would they lose that, as long as they are physically able to mod minecraft they will need to be downloaded for people to use. They can still use adfly for those downloads, it's not like because of the modding API making things 'more convenient' buildcraft and minecraft forge won't be able to be downloaded through adfly and mediafire. They have their own websites dedicated to their projects.
Because most of the mods/plugins will be for the server and those will be downloaded via a central repository managed by mojang. i.e. the server/client will download what's required behind the scenes in most cases. Of course that could change but that's what they were talking about and it came up in their discussion. Any mods still done to the actual jar files of minecraft would still be like they are now.
I see that you are happy to ignore what other users have reported in this thread. If your experience is like that, then everybody has that experience, right?
I fail to see how anyone could have it worse than me when I'm playing on a laptop that can hardly get more than 20 FPS with optifine and 2 GB of RAM allotted to it.
Unless you're playing on a rig that plays 1.2.5 at ~5 FPS on fast, you shouldn't have that many problems.
Sure, but that's so obvious that this post doesn't serve a purpose, unless you're one of those whiney types that goes around reminding everyone how hard Mojang is working to make 1.3 as perfect and bugless as possible.
But that doesn't make sense either, because my post isn't related to that.
You asked if any programmers could tell you what was up, and I told you that you don't need to be a programmer to realise that the code isn't finished.
Honestly, if I hadn't read the changelogs in the snapshots, I never would have even been aware of the merge. I usually play SSP and haven't noticed a difference at all in the latest snapshots. I've been in the range of 30-60 FPS since before 1.2.5, so it's not like I have an amazing computer.
Whatever the problem is, it's not as widespread as these forums make it seem. The people with problems come here and complain, and the people who don't have any problems are just happily playing Minecraft.

1) Um, no they will not, you have to turn the LAN play on, otherwise no one can connect to you.
2) You really ought to be happy that Mojang listens to the community at all.
3) That would make the whole merge pointless, because Mojang would still have to have SSM code

All very valid points, sir!
Allow me to make a few of my own:
Mods will (soon) not break with every update and work equally across SP and MP. Thanks to the API which relies 100% on the SP/MP merge.
Thanks to the merge, you can now (when you want to) share your SP world with your friends. This has been requested since Alpha.
Since SP and MP use the same code, bugs can now be squashed in half the time because they need only be squashed once. The price? Existing MP bugs now exist in SP. They will be fixed, and sooner than they would have been otherwise.
For everyone who says the update is taking too long: Try programming your OWN game on par with Minecraft. Notch wrote Minecraft Classic 100% by himself. When you can make a clone of Classic on your own in a single week or faster, THEN you can say that Mojang doesn't know what they are doing.

1. Ok well I was assuming that the servers worked like in 1.2.5. That's why I didn't want to get into that type of argument until my habit of responding to direct quotes came into play.
2. All media makers should listen to their fan base and community for negative and positive feedback even if it is only a small amount in order to continue sales and gain more positive feedback. You've mistaken my discontent with the previous arguer as bashing on Mojang's ability to gather feedback or so it seems. The fact that they made this forum for the community is in itself their way of allowing feedback and community socializing. Yeah I'm happy that they listen to the community you'd be an idiot to think I wouldn't be after playing this game since early beta and still continue to. That doesn't mean I won't give negative feedback for them to come across if they happen to notice it in order to allow my opinion to be understood. The 'you should be happy they listen' phrase is used way too often in situations where people are just trying to one up people as an extra point even if it doesn't apply.
3. That's kind of the point this thread is trying to make. We want the single player mode to be separate, for me I don't mind the merge as much as others, but I'm arguing for their points as much as possible. I have to admit though after a few hours I've lost that edge of wanting to prove a point. I want them to implement this after they have SMP working in an official release well enough so I know whether I should update or wait until 1.4 to update when the supposed huge fix is going to take place. That's why I said
This is where I don't want to get involved because it's stupid to argue about the after effects of a code that isn't complete so they have no way of knowing what will happen yet.
And I am aware that would require another good chunk of months to do, and yes I would be happy to wait that long for the game to get better I'm not one of those impatient people who spams around demanding a release date and that freaks out when they are a day or even a few months over their original intended date.

So... 1.3 is being released with these issues? Even the lighting issue?
To all of you naysayers who have ****-talked me in the past because you assumed these bugs would all be fixed before the update... **** OFF. You can no longer hold onto your little snapshot argument, your ignorance is bravado.
Minecraft is 100% a community game already. There is very little with Minecraft that didn't originate from the community. Even the game type: lego, sandbox, survival thingamajig is a result of the response from the community. If Notch had been blind he would have continued to develop Minecraft into a Roguelike game to a much larger extent than it is now, but he discovered gold and redirected his focus on what the community was asking for. A creative lego game with interesting quirks and crannies that are currently entertaining 6 million players.
To claim that Mojang doesn't listen to us is the ultimate form of ignorance.
