I've tried this on multiple system of complete opposites ends of the performance spectrum and the lighting issue persist on both. One is a top-notch, creme of the crop computer when it comes to tech specs; Intel i7 ivy-bridge at 3.6GHz, Gigabyte GTX580, 16GB RipJaw G.Skill RAM, 240GB SSD Boot drive, 2.5TB HDD Storage Drive, running Windows 7 Ultimate Edition (I do alot of intense game model development and heavy video editting). While the other system is a terrible All-in-one Sony system (iMac knock-off), with an Intel Pentium® Dual-core with all on-board video/sound support with 4GB of RAM running Windows Vista Home Edition.
One averages 800 FPS, while the other 15 FPS. Both experience the same lighting issues, although only the Sony experiences flashing 1st-person arm model and top-half of the chests flashing. I'm fairly certain it's not a hardware issue, but more of a terrible lighting system which I so, so, so badly want to be fixed...
This is nonsense. It worked fine before anvil has been introduced (which was in 1.2)
Go tell Jeb all that.
I was just asking if he had said that. I swear he said it on Reddit or Twitter sometime around the release of 1.2. Though he might not have fully understood why the bugs occurred then.
And Mike. Pretty sure lighting bugs didn't just start at 1.2. They had been around for awhile I think.

I "tweeted" him about it. Hope he gets back to me... is he good about doing that?

Honestly don't know. I don't tweet him. I think he replies to some people. But if he's already answered a commonly asked question before I don't think he'll answer again.

Not really, I still have this issue, even in the snapshots. So I have both the lighting errors and random objects blinking, which is particularly egregious on signs because when they blacken I can't read them.
The thing that causes this is a bad videocard. If you update it, it will stop.

I'd point out that both are using Intel processors and I think Jeb mentioned that they have compatibility issues, but I occasionally have lighting issues even with an AMD.

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
I had to abandon a Megabuild due to the anvil lighting. I was building and underground city and after I converted the world to anvil i got reverse lighting bugs. With random splotches of light that only spread if you tried to update them. I saved all the house I built as schematic files and then abandoned the world.

Seconded.
Also, it's Anvil. Don't even try to tell me it's not, or I'll pull up a picture of something horrifyingly lightbugged.

It works both ways, sadly. In light it's dark, in dark it's light.
Lol. I have a Gateway Windows 7 desktop with an AMD Radeon graphics card that can’t handle shaders (it gets laggy, not an incompatible graphics card), 30 fps, and still doesn’t have these lighting bugs. Wow. You guys should probably stop upgrading your computers. I don’t even have the money to upgrade -.-
On my laptop it has these lighting bugs, but it hads an Intel Pentium Dual-Core graphics card which is probably the reason -.-
Jeb is right -.-
I've been playing since beta 1.4_01 and the first lighting bugs appeared for me in beta 1.8.1.
- Jet black artifacts in terrain like the OP's image.
- Lava sometimes not emitting light until I stand in the same chunk. Then the game updates the lighting and looks normal.
Since upside down half blocks and stairs were added:
- Jet black artifacts on their underside surfaces if I try to make an entire ceiling out of them. Fortunately there's a mod that fixes this. (So it's not video card related, it's a problem in the game.)
At 1.2.5 I've got a really bad one: (screenshots in spoiler tags)
There should be no light on the underside of the island structure, yet you can see patches of light. If I pass near the blotches of light they spread light instead of turning dark. If I heap up sand under the island to make it a solid mountain, then remove the sand, this fixes all lighting issues UNTIL I exit. When I load the world again all of the errors return.
What I hate about this is how the dark patches can even be in th middle of a flat area, AND allow mobs to spawn.
I had this issue pop up in my base after I went off exploring. Came back to a dark patch and a LOT of mobs roaming around.
The most anoying thing about the lighting is that it ruins mountain biomes. Especially when strolling on by and all of a sudden hissing out of nowhere. Because a completely dark overhang allow a creeper to spawn.

Processors shouldn't have an effect on what things look like when they render o.o
Minecraft might literally have problems running on Intel CPUs. But that should be a separate issue to lighting bugs.
I could be wrong. But I just don't see how the two things can be related.

Affirming that these issues are a direct result of one's lackluster hardware is a complete farce. Having a top-of-the line PC which I have built and customized myself, I would anticipate flawless preference in regards to "hardware issues". Moreover it is worth noting that these lighting issues have become unduly prevalent in a snapshot several weeks ago. In all fairness lighting issues such as these have regularly occurred, albeit with much less frequency. However, seeing these dark blights on every chunk of observable landscape is unforgivable.
Also, in relation to the comments posted above which suggest the issues is a result of using Intel processors, I can confirm this is fallacious. I am currently sporting 6-core AMD 3.2ghz processor and these issues are still occurring.
Anyone who has been using the latest snapshots has most likely been experiencing these issues. Once the anvil world format was released Minecraft was experiencing numerous lighting glitches, however it was hastily "fixed" (at least for the majority of players). I am not experiencing frequent lighting issues as of 1.2.5 at the very least. However a recent snapshot was evidently responsible for these issues, around the time of the SSP-SMP merge, while I am merely speculating that these issues go hand-in-hand, it does seem very likely that these lighting issues are the result of "server"-to-client elucidation issues. Which explains why these complications remain even after unloading and reloading your map.
Clearly these issues need to be addressed based on the fact that it clearly affects most players, regardless of computer specs/setups/processor brands.

Seriously? I believe it’s the hardware. I have a cheap Gateway desktop with AMD Radeon and never get these lighting issues. Like I said, you guys should probably stop upgrading your computer. I have 64-bit.

I've had the same computer since beta1.8, these lighting glitches were fixed a while ago and they came back for me. The only thing I really have on this comp is minecraft.
