The thing is, you're not getting how currencies work. I'm all for new biome specific ores, but you can't have something be minable and the basis of a economy at the same time. To quote something I wrote on another thread that applies here: They're just barely rare enough right now for them to function as a currency, but they're not valuable enough per emerald to warrant having that kind of rarity. He didn't remove it because people thought it was "too rare", he removed it because minable emeralds would have ruined the point of trading.
But the thing is that Emeralds are extremely rare and exclusive to one biome. It's very hard to go mining and to come out a rich man, emerald wise. If they were as common as Diamond, then you would have a point, but they're not. They are very difficult to find. And heck, even with a Fortune III Pick, you'll still be lucky to get two Emeralds from it. And not to mention that again, leaving them exclusive to trading still makes them unobtainable in worlds generated without structures.
And Jeb made it very clear that he'll remove them because people complained they were too rare, and not understanding their main use.
Many complain that emerald ore is too rare. It's intended to be a "nice find," not the main way to gain currency. Will remove it again.
I'm sorry, but it's really annoying to get the same complaint over and over again. This way it's less confusion; emeralds are only currency
Anyway, thanks to everyone who signed! Lets keep them coming in hopes it'll change Jeb's mind!
...he removed it because minable emeralds would have ruined the point of trading.
I don't want to start arguments, but even with it's rarity do you think it'd ruin trading? My problem with that quote of yours is that we aren't trading person to person, we're trading person to computer and that we are either using the emeralds we have to get items that we could've gone off and made/obtained by the time we actually mined any. Another thing with them being so rare is that you could trade other renewable items to profit.
. . . you can't have something be minable and the basis of a economy at the same time.
That doesn't make sense. Gold and silver are mineable (in reality) and have served as currencies in numerous cultures. Furthermore, we can already trade renewable resources for emeralds, so allowing emeralds to be mined makes them no more renewable than they already are.

Tangible currencies worked for thousands of years Gold, Silver and Salt for example, were all used and highly valued as currencies. Its only been in the last few hundred years that people have switched from tangible currencies to promissory notes with little to no intrinsic value.
I personally don't see how running across a fairly rare biome specific gem would have ruined trading since it would be far more efficient to build a wheat farm to the same end. Running across an emerald here or there would have made for a nice little reward.
Perhaps make it slightly more common as I personally don't enjoy the idea of biome specific ores.
I would love to see world get more general content but at the same time I would love to see more specific biome content. It just gives the biomes themselves more of personality so to speak.
/signed...a new ore finally and now its being removed because people are dumb??? well if we remove all good things because people are to dumb to understand them we will have nothing atall.
I find his removing it to be fairly unreasonable. The only reason to remove something is if people complain that it shouldn't be in game, even then removal should be considered carefully, and only if there is an overwhelming (multi-million user) complaint. No one said that emerald ore shouldn't be in the game, just that it shouldn't be so rare. I currently have no opinion other than that it should be in game. So if you read this Jeb, then please add the ore back into the game.
I totally agree. I understand why he removed it, but we haven't had a new ore in over a year, and even it doesn't do much.
This game is called MINEcraft, mining from the start was a decent part of the game. Mining is a big deal, and it still is, but eventually, you get to the stage I'm at. You never mine anymore, you just don't, because there's nothing left to mine. I have so many diamonds, and so much gold, iron, redstone, and lapis that I never mine anymore. There needs to be new ores that add content to the game.
tl;dr: Bring back emerald ore, but if you don't want it to be used for trading then just give it some new uses.

I want this new ore in the game
A new ore in the game and Jeb removes it!? He needs to keep it as it is or make it less rare, but I love the idea of finding it in mountain biomes.

we REALLY need a new ore, and making it mineable makes it accessible to people who dont want to deal with the Testificates.

It is not the weapon that makes the warrior, but the warrior that makes the weapon.
