With snapshot 12w21a, a new item has been put into the game: Ender chests
The whole point of having these is to allow players to be able to quickly bank items from one location to another. It is just like a normal chest, but it is made of obsidian and an eye of ender instead of wood.
For those doing multiplayer, it allows you to have a "community chest" where contents can be put in or removed by anybody on the server at any location on the server. I can see this being extremely useful for SMP where you may have one crew doing building while another is doing branch mining for materials and sharing all of the building materials through the chest network.
A part of me sort of hates the idea though. It completely nerfs the concept of logistics, where you need to negotiate how you move literally a mountain of materials from one location to another. Instead you have a Star Trek like teleporter system moving stuff instantaneously across vast distances and even from other parallel universes (aka the variously misnamed "dimensions" usually talked about like the Nether and End). My argument here is that it diminishes the role that a rail network typically provides and essentially nerfs minecarts into a second class status. Nearly everything this mod is doing could in theory be done with a rail network.
I can see some players (especially lazy players who have a short attention span and love every cheat possible) really loving this new item though. I'm not really impressed with the idea and I would love to at least caution Jeb about this item or possibly even convince him that it shouldn't be put into 1.3. I'm sure over time I can put other objections about this item, but the more I think about it, the less I like it. Yes, I get the argument "so don't build it". That may be true. I just think it ruins the game though.
The good, the bad, and the ugly was a 2 hour 40 minute movie. I feel it's long screen time actually hurt the story.
Like the other movies in "The man with no name trilogy" It certainly draws parallels from Japanese samurai movies, though I'm not sure if it copied one directly like "A fistful of dollars" did. It uses some of the same humor and the part where he shoots the targets in half at the beginning is certainly something straight out of a samurai movie.
For those that don't know, "A fistful of dollars" is a direct copy of the movie "Yojimbo" but with cowboys instead of samurai.
Not sure how it would render railway networks near-useless. You still need to travel, the chest doesn't teleport you, just a LIMITED number of items. It's basically just a second inventory; you still have to go back and forth, just fewer times. Unless you mean minecart-chests, which would still have a purpose considering you can have MULTIPLE minecart-chests filled with various items.

believe it or not thanks for the info, Im going to watch that movie Yojimbo.... if I can find it first :s
I've considered rails a pain for a while now; I'd rather use a network of Nether portals to skip over long distances (arguably, the Nether nerfed rails long before the Ender chest). Prior to this update, if I had to move contents between lots of chests, I'd just roll my eyes and do it on foot (with or without portals); I never could justify messing around with storage and powered minecarts because they seemed so awkward and slow. Definitely wasn't challenging in the fun sense of the word; it was just a chore.
Therefore, I'm happy to be able to reduce the tedium. I think requiring obsidian and an Eye of Ender is cost enough; you won't get it super-early, but it's not an end-of-game reward either. Plus, I'm thrilled about the idea of carrying an Ender chest around like a subspace backpack.
yeah i mean its just one small chest, you cant even double it up. on servers this is irrelevant, cuz if one guy is on the other end he can constantly empty it, but you still need to travel. i've got loads of trains on my map and its mostly just so i can get one inventory worth of x material. i think it definitely changes the dynamic, but trains are cool so i cant imagine this killing them.
Hm... I understand both the good and bad about this.
Having studied operating systems recently in class, I wonder if the chests could work like this: (chest is initially empty)
1.) Fill chest with items.
2.)Insert ender pearl to send the items to "virtual chest space." The chest becomes locked.
3.)Insert another ender pearl to recieve items from "virtual chest space". The chest becomes unlocked and is filled with its new contents.
This way there'd have to be a bit of sacrafice for all the easy access, and it would make sense in terms of the Endermens' teleporting-ability lore.
Sorry you don't like it. I use minecarts to transport myself around. I don't think I've ever once built the storage minecart, so I couldn't care less if it's made obsolete.
Were you also upset when teleporting with ender pearls made walking obsolete and ruined the game?

I wonder if you ever tried to send chest minecarts a liong distance...

I kind of like this idea. As it stands now servers get ONE chest. This makes it completely useless on large servers and any server not cooperative.
Jeb stated that the reason for being a single server side chest was he wanted a draw back.
"No, I wanted it to have a drawback, and it makes more sense that it's the same chest for everyone"
Now if you had to spend an ender eye just to access the contents of your chest then all the sudden it has cost and drawback so maybe it can be a player side item and not just one per server.

I think that this is epic because 2 reasons
1. You can make it a ''Story chest'' in SMP servers everyone can get their stories in a chest and read other ones from their own home
2. Its cool for adventure map checkpoints
Adding any sort of convienence to a game like Minecraft ends up removing some gameplay. The ender chest does remove some of the fun of transporting items long distances. The question really is whether the chest adds enough new gameplay to make up for what it takes away.
I think it does. It's only one inventory worth of items so its saving you one trip transporting. On the other hand the chest seems like it has a lot of new possibilities, especially in SMP.

Version 2.1 now updated for MC 1.6.2

That's a very mature and thought out response!
It's basically just adding on to your current inventory. It's a great addition.
