I installed snapshot 12w19a today, like I've done with every snapshot before. I downloaded only the client (as I don't play SMP) and put the .jar in my bin.
I loaded up Minecraft and it worked fine, until I tried to load a new world (I wanted to check out the large biomes). I got a message that says this:
It's worse than that; he's dead, Jim!
Unfortunately, we can't automagically download the server for this snapshot. Go download the server, and extract it to: C;\User]Home\Appdata\Roaming\.minecraft\server\minecraft_server.jar
When you're done hit okay to try it again!
So I did this, and it said: Logging in...downloading terrain...
I'm playing on SINGLE PLAYER. Why is it doing this? From the looks of the GUI, my single player worlds have been morphed into servers, but that can't possibly be right, with what I know about setting up servers (and I haven't done).
Weird? Or am I just not caught up to date on all the weird stuff's been going on since 12w17a?
SSP has been merged with SMP.
SSP now hosts a local server.
It's still being bugfixed, and it's quite buggy right now. All SMP bugs are in SSP.
But they'll all be fixed by the time 1.3 is officially released.
There is a bin folder and a server folder in the zip. You need to put both in the .Minecraft folder. It sounds as though you didn't install the server.
But they'll all be fixed by the time 1.3 is officially released.
We pray that they'll all be fixed by the time 1.3 is officially released.

Statistics show that people who tell others they need to get a new computer are twice as likely to use "gay" as a negative descriptor and will most likely never see genitals in real life, at least while not in prison.

For now, that's suppose to happen, it's because of the SMP/SSP merge. As long as you can still play and it is not laggy, you are fine.
Neither of those communicate that he'll be experiencing what perplexed him. Knowing what the person actively interested in the process or with a vested interest in the merge knows, you might presume it, but to the lay person, it doesn't communicate what the changes mean or what experiences they'll have.

I haven't really seen many glitches, other then godmode slimes and the pausing bug.
I don't think pausing's a bug. Since it wouldn't make sense to pause in a multiplayer game, and since they are merging single and multiplayer, that pausing thing is probably there on purpose.

It would make sense if multiple players were online, but not when you're the only person playing.
Maybe you would have a "start world in singleplayer/multiplayer" button in the full release. The only problem with that is the client's dependency on the server.
I am on a Mac and I haven't downloaded a snapshot since the old skool way (Just replacing the Minecraft.jar file) I saw the bigger biomes and thought I cant wait for the release so i thought i'd download it. It says about the 2 jars i need to put in my application support/minecraft folder and minecraft/server folder. I put the minecraft.jar in as normal, but for some strange reason I have No minecraft/server folder to the other jar in. I tried logging in and got the Jims dead message, but it wont let me go any further. I am really stuck and have looked everywhere for a vid or someone who might even know what the hell i am doing wrong. Please help xxxx
You have to make the server folder... Just right click>new folder and name it "Server" without the quotes. the minecraft_server.jar goes in there. once you run it it will fill the folder with stuff like the properties and the banlists.

That sounds cool. The singleplayer worlds would work like they currently do now, and the multiplayer would work like they're trying to do with the upcoming releases, where it's singleplayer and you can invite people.

Pausing was not a bug, but I think I remember seeing Dinnerbone (or was it Jeb) saying they would change it so that it would pause if you're alone, or even give OPs the ability to mass pause the server.

As for your problem, no clue how to fix it.

We hope, we pray, but many of us highly doubt.

It's probably just as hard for him as it is for you, just guessing.
