I honestly NEVER agree to things like this because now we have SMP bugs and and now mods are very limited they could atleast give you the option to that optionally instead and now we can also have griefers in our SSP server world, what's your oppinion?
Sadly you don't understand what exactly what they are doing.
Mods will become much LESS limited with this, as no long will they need to code for 2 different 'games'.
Also no, griefers won't be able to come onto your SSP world, unless you're too stupid and let them on.
My opinion is that this is a great thing to finally come. After all, it's been MONTHS that it was going to be added. Probably longer than you've played MC even.

Best game ever: Ace of Spades FREE FPS minecraft-like game.

Read what you wrote. There are a few things misunderstood by what Mojang is implementing.
In regards to mods, this is something that is FOR mods. Think about it. Right now, there are basically two minecrafts, one for SSP and one for SMP. Mods don't generally work for minecraft SSP and SMP right now. Some do, a lot don't. They are working to consolidate the code so we have one minecraft. This means mod authors will have a lot less to work on. However, something many people on the forums forget is there will STILL BE SSP and SMP, but it will be more from a point of view than from being two separate code bases.
As for all the SMP bugs. Obviously for this idea to be a successful one, they will have to work really hard to fix SMP and make it behave the way SMP does. If they do not, then yes, I am in agreement, this is a bad idea. However since they release updates on their own schedule I am confident they will work their asses off before releasing 1.3.
To your other point about griefers. This is not possible. The feature will allow you to invite friends to your world to play with you. You are safe unless your friends are jerks, but if you invite a griefer to your game then in this case it's your own fault. Additionally, you don't have to invite your friend.

this.
people dont seem to realize that Mojang is far from stupid. they know that SMP is buggy, and they know that they'll have to fix it for this merge to work.
Essentially what I got out of it was that they are going to be ditching SSP and replacing it with SMP(with essentially an offline mode). I'm cool with that. heck I used to run a server on my computer and just connectected the client through localhost, in the event my friends ever wanted to jump in and It worked perfectly fine. You personally are connecting through localhost so the lag to you would be somewhere around 0ms.
What it means is everything will have the potential to be SMP but you are not in any way forced to play with other people nor would you even need to be online. On top of that since they are effectively merging the two it will allow them to focus on one MC which should make hammering out bugs and releasing an API that much easier.
Yes there will be growing pains but in the long run things will be better
I am protesting this, so hopefully others will with me.
Same here.
Out of all of the Minecraft updates EVER,
this is the first one where I've honestly, really thought that it's terrible. Gotta find a way to revert.
This is supposed to be such a "good idea" but the game appears to be falling apart. Starting a world, I more than once got "could not connect" sorts of errors, despite that..... you know...... SINGLEPLAYER ON MY OWN DAMN MACHINE...... also noticed that you CANNOT PAUSE THE GAME. This is..... kinda important. If I want to PAUSE, I have to EXIT. Every time.
And I'm hearing of crazy-ass bugs and all sorts of screwball problems, someone said the Nether doesnt work (what), and so on and so forth.
Ugh.
Fortunately my seperate modded version of the game ISNT updated to this, so I'll probably stick with that for awhile.

Mojang has stated several times that its a highly experimental version included in this snapshot. bugs will be fixed. its not like Mojang is too stupid to ignore this many bugs...

You just said Mojang is stupid enough to ignore that many bugs. I doubt this was your intention.
Also, they have been. For two years. They didn't introduce new bugs, they just forced them on SSP.

Statistics show that people who tell others they need to get a new computer are twice as likely to use "gay" as a negative descriptor and will most likely never see genitals in real life, at least while not in prison.

That's one thing that I found VERY misleading when evilseph joined mojang, I thought bukkit and the server were gonna be merged, but now that seems very unlikely, at least that's the conclusion I came too when I heard they Hired one of the bukkit devs.
Sucks hard man, other than that, I have no complaint on the new system, it runs like a champ on my Intel i5 machine, it seems to be working ok on my old amd machine, except for the same old extreme smp lag thing I always got on that machine. Driver issue.
Mojang has stated several times that its a highly experimental version included in this snapshot. bugs will be fixed. its not like Mojang is too stupid to ignore this many bugs...
Frankly, the thing should have exploded with warnings or something.
Braystreet has a point though. SMP has been a buggy disaster for...... quite a long time. Or, so I've heard, anyway; I dont play SMP.
.....which I suppose is part of my problem with this release. All of the crap of a game mode I couldnt care less about, stuffed into the one I DO care about..... super. Just super.
And frankly I dont trust the Bukkit guys to do all that much (just my opinion, mind you). As for Jeb, at least he knows what he's doing. Still, I sense this is going to take..... quite awhile. Hope I'm wrong, but....
Either way, for now, I'm done with the snapshots/updates until this is COMPLETELY fixed (or removed, which would be better, though I'm well aware it wont happen).
Yes it will likely take a while, but Minecraft will be much better for it in the long run. Improved mod compatibillity and ease of use, quicker bug fixes and updates of both vanilla and mods, not to mention much easier online gaming with friends. There may be bugs at first, but give it time...
Eh, I'd still rather they just keep it optional or something, as some players.... such as myself..... will get pretty much nothing out of this one, aside from annoyance. Quicker bug fixes is something I very heavily doubt..... Mojang has NEVER been good about bug fixes, much as I like Notch and Jeb and crew.... dont care about online gaming, and I dont use SMP mods (specifically, the mods I tend to use dont have SMP versions in the first place, so it doesnt affect how fast they're put out), so dont care about that either. And I KNOW I sure as heck aint the only one that plays the game in such a way as to utterly stay away from the SMP side of things.
Ugh. At least with the previous versions, I could just COMPLETELY IGNORE the fact that SMP even existed; never had to deal with ANY of it's problems.
I see this as most other logical people do. This feature will work much like the game Animal Crossing for the DS. You have your world and you can do whatever you want with it but let's say you want to show off your private world to a friend. Perhaps you want to give him a tour instead of just sharing the save file. You would now have the oppertunity to invite that single person over to your world. You are not opening the floodgates to a world of griefers. Just inviting a friend.
I would see it best being set up in a way where you bring up a screen in the in game menu that asks if you want to invite a friend. You type in their IGN and on their client your server shows up in a list of servers open to them. You would have other options for this particular individual such as blocking their ability to break any blocks or what game mode they are in. If you ever wanted to get them out in a hurry you could hit esc and click a button that kicks them out of the world. Easy peasy.
I think some people are turning this into a bigger deal then it really is and in the long run we are going to see far more good come then bad. Remember that you bought a game as it was and nothing more is owed to you. If Jeb decides that the next patch will remove the sandbox element then that is 100% fine. He isn't making you upgrade.

i applaud your optimism.
that last part is going to get you attacked, though.
This makes the coding in general much easier. Instead of having to implement a SSP then SMP version, they do one. It means less bugs for both SSP and SMP in future and easier coding in general once coders get used to the new way of things working.

Notch on his twitter: "bugs that feel wrong get fixed"
Do not get attached to your saves, seriously, stuff like this has happened before, if there's something you love and really want to build...Wait for release.
I like the merge idea. Hopefully it will inspire fixes to SMP that SSP players would be annoyed with, like the glitchy mobs/entities. As I understand it the glitchiness is not, as was suggested earlier, because of lag, but rather because of differences in positioning logic. If it was all about lag, the BetterSMP mod couldn't possibly fix it so well.
just out of curiosity, how many people have watched AntVenom's video for the new snapshot? he had a server running with around 60 people, TNT spheres going off, and no lag whatsoever.
SMP is better though. Most of the bugs in SMP are related to lag and instabilities associated with sending large amounts of data continuously through a Network. Even if it's your own server, you still had to send the data to yourself, which was very inefficient.
In this way, running and playing on your own server will be half as intensive as before as your client and the server are the same. Well that's just a theory actually. If they keep the code the same for you connecting to your own server, there will still be the issues of you connecting to yourself or more specifically your router and back to you.
I don't think there is much to worry about really. It will make things a lot easier to switch between multi and single. This is a good thing.
