I sincerely hope the combination of SMP and SSP doesn't make it live. This is the worst thing Mojang has ever done, which, admittedly, I've never thought they did anything wrong in the past. I bought a stable single player game in Alpha, and I've played a stable single player game for nigh-on two years, but today, I try the snapshot so I can help spot bugs and see the new features, as is my kingly duty, and this is simply awful. I gave them their money, I got the right to play SMP, and I never did, because it was awful. Now, I don't have a choice. Mobs are laggy, they have no collision detection. I can't pause the game to answer the phone because well, that'd be weird for other people since it automatically creates a server for me. I have to deal with extra lag because of the extra processes. I'm getting terrain glitches where I never have before. I'd rather they stop development altogether than make the game as bad as this.
I liked the writable books, I was looking forward to the mod support. I didn't have any feelings one way or another about the books. I don't feel like cocoa beans are compromising dungeons. Beds didn't end the world.
Forcing me to play crappy SMP? I will never update again. Minecraft has always been about giving the player choices, and if this goes live, we won't even have a choice about playing a fully functioning game.
EDIT - I know, I hate people who think their thoughts are worth a private thread when there are dozens of similar threads too, but there's no other threads specifically about this, and I think I've earned one, because I have a pocket.
Statistics show that people who tell others they need to get a new computer are twice as likely to use "gay" as a negative descriptor and will most likely never see genitals in real life, at least while not in prison.
Agreed, I only play Single player survival. I have 2 kids, and pause the game a LOT...
I can't push my villagers around anymore, I have errors loading new chunks (1/2 of a building loads, I have to log out and back in to see the entire thing) (example http://puu.sh/sIZ5 )
I say leave Single player alone ... if I wanted to run my own server, I would.
Note - the changes are NOT complete, but the game should run normally.
Obviously you'll be getting some extra lag because it's an uncomplete bunch of buggy code just yet.
I don't see how there will be more lag in the actual official update.
I don't think it'll be like hosting a local server now - I'm sure the code will treat the local server-client relation specially. First, because the connection is self-contained on your computer, you won't experience the same lag as if you were connecting to a server hundreds of miles away. Second, I'm sure the game could be paused normally; I doubt they'd ignore that. And third, the Bukkit team has shown a focus on fixing multiplayer bugs.

Hello, and again, welcome to the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. We are currently experiencing technical difficulties due to circumstances of potentially apocalyptic significance, beyond our control.
While I understand the mass concern here, I think we should wait until a final product version. Tweaks and finalizations still need to be made. I doubt Jeb would let Minecraft turn into such a mess.
I like the whole idea of merging the two together. However I'm sure they wouldn't just throw together some code carelessly without fixing lag or bugs or anything. My point is that I'm sure that they won't completely screw this up. Stop worrying about something that hasn't even begun development yet.

Um, it has "begun development" as it is in this snapshot. They feel that it is ready for testing. We are voicing our concerns over the testing phase. I personally do not want to run a server every time I play this game. I play single player for a reason.... Now, if they allow us to make it a server when we want to, thats fine, I can show my friends what I have made. but not all the time... It's laggy.
Also, I don't like not being able to walk into villagers and mobs, I like to push them around where I want them.
And I have to get up a lot, as I have 2 kids, pressing escape does not pause the game anymore... seeing as how I play on survival, this was a dangerous lesson to learn.
Remain calm, the reason they make optional snapshots available is so players can find and report bugs, glitches, etc. Of course things that make the game almost unplayable aren't going to be included in the actual release.
I think it will still be like singleplayer, but you will have the option to invite people to your world. If you don't, you shouldn't get the lag, the chunk errors, or any of that shite. That is all related to connection issues and not the game itself. If you run it on your own pc and you don't invite people to your map, you will have no more lag than the singleplayer we have now.
And this feature is in the earliest phase of development, so it will take a really long to get good.
....When i read the change log i cried a little....making us single players have no real new features just so the precious smp players dont have to wait to get theyre update...GRRRR....i wish smp was never added in becuase its taking away content from single player....I WANT BIOMES,MOBS,ITEMS,BLOCKS....
What a horrible snapshot....i cant even install it because it breaks enchanting...GRRRR,,,to be honest i just lost a ton of faith in the developers...Grrr...next week they better release some real entertaining content that we can get excited about as opposed to tweaks and bug fixes....
I have almost never played ssp. Even now I am running a sever on my desktop together with the client, in the case that another of the family wants to drop in. I will go as far as saying that MC did not feel attractive before I could play it with friends, showing each other what we made and collaborate on big projects. The current snapshots are a bit to unstable for my liking, but I really look forward to them being a bit more stable. And as for doing a server/client model for single player, it is as old as Quake. You don't have to code things twice, which means less work, which in turn makes it possible to squash more bugs and add features.
So, you played the snapshot to help spot bugs but get all pissy when you find them?
This is not a bug. This is how the feature is designed. It forces single player, as it currently stands, at least, to be SMP. That is the feature. Not a bug. it's how they designed the combination to function. It's the worst thing to happen to Minecraft.

Sooo....they spent the entire week so that they can be lazy and not have to update both single player and multiplayer...And caused 9000 bugs in the process of....making it so they can be more lazy............WHAT???? If you are going to do something that creates bugs atleast have it be INTERESTING!

This didn't really create any new bugs. Most of the ones that I've heard of or experienced are also present in SMP. Please don't exaggerate. Minecraft is a game that just begs to have you show off your stuff to other players, and this feature is the way to do it. You shouldn't even act all surprised about this, Notch was talking about an easier way to create servers back before the adventure update.
Do you people actually READ about these updates?!?
Do you REALLY expect Mojang to FORCE you to play multiplayer? How do you even expect that to work, people just randomly joining into your game without your knowing? This SP/SMP option is going to be just that, an option. You will (hopefully, unless Mojang acts stupid) have to turn on the option to allow for other people to join, and you will (probably) be able to make a whitelist so only your friends can join into your SP world.
Why would Mojang go and absolutely destroy SP on a whim? Oh ya, they wouldn't >.>
BTW: It was funny how you are using the "I bought it in Alpha and it was(n't) like..." IT WAS ALPHA! YOU KNEW IT WAS GOING TO CHANGE! That is NOT, I repeat, NOT a valid argument against something.

Back in my day, sheep dropped brown mushrooms, and by golly we... Hated it, pretty much.
