I've yet to see that. What I have seen is people say that the bugs are now singular issues and Mojang kills two birds with one stone by fixing one set of bugs now.
Well, that's not exactly how I interpreted any of these:
I like the whole idea of merging the two together. However I'm sure they wouldn't just throw together some code carelessly without fixing lag or bugs or anything. My point is that I'm sure that they won't completely screw this up. Stop worrying about something that hasn't even begun development yet.
Remain calm, the reason they make optional snapshots available is so players can find and report bugs, glitches, etc. Of course things that make the game almost unplayable aren't going to be included in the actual release.
That out of the way, should you play purely SSP, the game will be completely unchanged for you once all the code is finished. You will notice no difference. Most of your anger and fear stems from an incredibly incomplete snapshot with many bugs to be worked out. Once it's released it won't be like this. Give it a chance before you crucify this change and Mojang for making it.
It's barely even finished yet, of course it'll be buggy.
All of those people adamantly believe that there's no possible way that Mojang would let any of the SMP bugs into SSP without squashing them first. I'll choose to believe that when I see it. I do very much hope they are right.
I fully understand that merging the two will make things easier. And if you read all of my previous posts, you'd realize that I fully support the concept. I also fully realize that this will ultimately force them to finally fix the SMP bugs, and that is indeed awesome.
What I do not foresee, is Mojang fixing the bugs before the merge. Which will, at least temporarily, make SSP worse than it currently is. Again, I certainly hope I am wrong. However, Mojang's previous track record would indicate otherwise.
Why is everyone whining abnd moaning about this? NO ONE is forcing you to play SMP, it's OPTIONAL to let you invite your friends or whoever ino your world. They are joining the two for this reason.
Incorrect. They are modifying the game so that "single player" is actually a client running on a local one-person server. Now there are definitely benefits to doing it this way, such as only having a single code-base, and making it possible to switch a single-player game to multi-player mode. However, it does mean that you will get certain SMP issues, and there is no way to "opt out" of that.
I sincerely hope the combination of SMP and SSP doesn't make it live. This is the worst thing Mojang has ever done, which, admittedly, I've never thought they did anything wrong in the past. I bought a stable single player game in Alpha, and I've played a stable single player game for nigh-on two years, but today, I try the snapshot so I can help spot bugs and see the new features, as is my kingly duty, and this is simply awful. I gave them their money, I got the right to play SMP, and I never did, because it was awful. Now, I don't have a choice. Mobs are laggy, they have no collision detection. I can't pause the game to answer the phone because well, that'd be weird for other people since it automatically creates a server for me. I have to deal with extra lag because of the extra processes. I'm getting terrain glitches where I never have before. I'd rather they stop development altogether than make the game as bad as this.
I liked the writable books, I was looking forward to the mod support. I didn't have any feelings one way or another about the books. I don't feel like cocoa beans are compromising dungeons. Beds didn't end the world.
Forcing me to play crappy SMP? I will never update again. Minecraft has always been about giving the player choices, and if this goes live, we won't even have a choice about playing a fully functioning game.
EDIT - I know, I hate people who think their thoughts are worth a private thread when there are dozens of similar threads too, but there's no other threads specifically about this, and I think I've earned one, because I have a pocket.
Valid complaints, wrong conclusion... I hope.
As long as they address all of these issues before releasing it as a formal version, then there is no issue.
But if they are complete idiots and release a formal version in this conditions... all the complaints become totally valid.
Those quoted examples (besides Gig's) are not at all what you were mocking earlier. Mojang actually can get the game to play exactly as it did before by placing in specific logic for when it's only the host in the world. Games do this all the time.
Jeez dude! Did you just drink beer? Calm down! Its a snapshot a.k.a. an optional installed version to FIND BUGS SO MOJANG CAN FIX THEM! And due to all the complaints they are most likely going to make it so you can invite people or they can send you a request! Jeez! Am I the only one happy about this new update?
He was being sarcastic dude. -.- That was his imitation of all the people whining about the snapshot, it was a joke.
I don't like it... I have a feeling it will make both modes worse. But I'm willing to wait before I pass final judgement.
Same here. If the final version contains glitchy mob movement, I am going to be absolutely pissed because that is the main reason I hate SMP. Though you can not really predict what will happen in the future for certain, so I am just going to remain patient until the final version does come.

IIRC that's one of the main things that one of the bukkit team members is working on.
I feel like we should reserve judgement until 1.3 comes out. Of course, we shouldn't avoid the matter entirely, that's not what I meant. My point is that we shouldn't dismiss this idea as being terrible until we see what Mojang does with it. I mean thing about it, bugs notwithstanding, wouldn't this be an amazing feature; to invite your friends into your single player world whenever you want? Given the right options, that'd be awesome!
The big deal with this is , of course, the bugs, but since SMP is technically going to be the only gamemode, this forces Mojang to fix them. Whether they fix all (or the majority) of the bugs though, remains to be seen. Personally, I'm tentatively optimistic.
Yeah, your bit of cliche "wisdom" is great and all, surely worth posting twice, Sting-Auer. Except it doesn't apply.
There are no bug fixes that will fix this. If they were possible, they'd already would have been done when SMP was a standalone problem. The problem is that SMP is broken, and now that it has consumed SSP, it's just the status quo. This isn't the beginning of a process, it's a broken system overtaking a functional one.
Didn't they remedy SMP mob glitching just recently? Did the change revert or was it not good enough? I think the reason SMP problems have gone unfixed for so long is that Mojang doesn't really test on SMP as much. With the problems becoming glaring SSP problems Mojang will have no choice but to fix them.
(Do you really think Mojang would leave the game in such an unplayable state? They might as well stop developing Minecraft at that point, but Jeb still seems pretty motivated to keep developing.)

Well, if that's how they choose to circumvent this issue, that would be acceptable. As it stands now in the snapshot, they just turned SSP into SMP, complete with all the bugs that come with it, thereby removing the much-less-buggy original single-player. Given what they are trying to do, and why, I'm not sure I'd assume that they will do what you are proposing.
Ideally, they will realize that they need to fix SMP first and then combine the two. Your "specific logic" above would be a "bandage" to cover the problem, not the solution, but that would be fine for now. I'm just not sure why they would bother to actually add code to do that, when they could more easily just avoid merging the two until they get SMP working correctly. In reality, it seems far more likely to me that they might just merge them now, and release the next update with most all of the bugs, such as super-glitchy mobs, still in it. But as I said, I hope I'm wrong there.
But as I said, if they want to "merge now, fix later," I'll just avoid updating until they get their stuff worked out. I just hope that it takes something less than the 1-2 years that SMP has been buggy for.

Considering that the mod API probably won't be coming out at the same time as 1.3, and instead it'll be the SSP/SMP merge, I bet it'll mostly be fixed in time, they do have at least a month left.

I know this is a snapshot, and obviously it will be buggy. But SMP contains many bugs and glitches which are so old it isn't funny, and now these are being brought to single player. People are getting angry because it is highly unlikely Mojang will fix all of these bugs before the official release, thus making SSP become extremely buggy and rubbish.
I'm guessing all the dumb nuts here can't read. It's just like Minecraft Handheld Edition. Play that before you start complaining over something you don't understand.

Says the guy that comes into the thread quite obviously not having read any of the actual posts in it to know what we are talking about. Good try though.

Wow, you didn't read the thread at all did you?

Read what? We've gotten relatively little word from anyone inside Mojang about this, people are just assuming, hoping, or guessing based off the logical course of action. What little there has been said has been ambiguous and reads more like they could be talking about implementing the Easter Bunny so much as anything as game-rending as what this snapshot shows. What exactly has Mojang released for you to read that reveals that everything will be okay and that there is absolutely no cause for concern?
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Statistics show that people who tell others they need to get a new computer are twice as likely to use "gay" as a negative descriptor and will most likely never see genitals in real life, at least while not in prison.
Enough arguing for argument's sake. Isn't it kinda premature to be alarmed about an update, (that you dislike) when it hasn't been released? Post what you do or don't like about the snapshot, but you can't judge an update when it doesn't yet exist

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.

Then I read the post.
I know this is post beta beta, but why would they even THINK about implementing this mess?
I avoid the "play multiplayer" button on purpose.
