I've never had any of them be smoothered or pushed out. This farm is on SSP I also have one on SMP farming cows just isn't as time consuming as other tasks. I mean it's not like you have to sit and watch them grow.

Using glass works better, but now my farm doesn't look like a proper concentration camp anymore:
(The pig's dead now. He knows what he did.)
You do need to keep checking on them to breed them every day. Then you need to hunt them down or build an elaborate contraption to kill, as even a diamond sword won't get them in one hit. (Watch as the one you hit disappears into the crowd.) You then might get some leather for each one killed.
Each kill reduces the reproduction capacity. You have to wade through the ones left, clicking to see if you've bred them or not.
Entities are just such a headache. I could see it actually being worth it if cows were actually the leather piñatas that they should be (given the low-tier status of leather and the effort required.)
Just hold the mouse button down and run pass them, no multiple clicking, use an enchanted sword for quicker kills. I don't bother with contraptions I just take a minute to do some cow slaughter and leave the babies behind. I suppose there is a more efficient way but *shrug* You only need 15 book shelves so it only takes half the time it used to. You can still go mining, farming, building, or whatever in the mean time.
A Looting sword would help increase leather drops. Also before this I would have a stock pile of leather and nothing to do with it.

Hold down the button? You have to click multiple times for the sword to swing, it's not mining. lol
Hmm, I'm going to go enchant my sword with a lvl30 enchant to get looting so I can collect leather to make bookshelves for enchanting. Wait a second...
unless of course you spend your time trying to get looting at a lower level instead of just breeding more cows.
Think about the size of a cow and think about the size of one leather. Maybe one Leather should give 4 Leather patches that was used in most recipes? Armor included.

I was referring to the breeding with the wheat, not the killing.
Just adding another opinionated voice here. To the folk here saying this is more "realistic". It is not realistic that you get only 1 book from a whole cow. it is also not realistic that books can only be made with leather bindings.
Finally this is the first major update for me that added a significant amount of tedium and grind to the game. I use books to make bookshelves for aesthetic purposes. The enchantment table is an afterthought. This has left most of my structures half empty.
Given that I only have time to play casually this is a huge setback for me. This was not a fun addition to MC. This is a taking away.

Oh, well I don't like to hold the button because each cow can eat multiple wheat(when in love mode) so it depletes it very quickly and wastes wheat unless they fixed that.
The leather piece looks a little bit like the hide of the cow and not a piece of leather. I think one leather piece should be enough for at least half or a third of an armor set. That means that one cow hide (leather) should be turned into 8 leather (new item) that in turn could be used in the existing recipes.

Rather than try to be realistic, cows should drop as much leather as is good balance. Think about how many feathers a chicken would realistically drop.
Leather needs to be at least as common as iron, and iron needs to be somewhat rarer than it currently is (either by decreasing the number of ores or the caves exposing them.)
Of cmon, leather is useless. Good to have some form of use for it and getting it isn't that hard, I had always plenty of it, even before of animal breeding feature. IMO it's fine and I find it a good change.
Leather is not useless. BUT THIS NEW RECIPE ANNOYS ME SO MUCH! I only have one leather and I want to make a book... so... NO!
The largest leather retailer in the US says that your argument is invalid. Cow hide == Leather.
Also, leather armor takes a huge amount of leather to make, considering that it is made of of several layers of hide to be of any real protection.
Hehe, I wasn't looking for realism, just an alternative to the ongoing discussion. Do you really think my idea would create that much controversy? Was it really such a bad idea? It's not that I wrote it in stone either. One leather piece could give only 4 or 2 leather patches. Why don't you use your expertise to suggest changes instead of going at my throat?
Anyway, are you an expert in wood working too? How do you turn one cubic meter of timber into 4 cubic meter of planks?
Just make a cow farm and you'll have more leather than you'll ever need.
The thing is, you won't. A lot of the time cows drop no leather at all. Zero. Zip. Nada. Zilch. That's bad news for people who actually want to decorate with bookshelves, which is what they were used for long before enchanting was added.
He wasn't going at your throat, he was explaining something he obviously has some knowledge about.
His choices of fairly strong words transmitted on to me. It does not surprise me that a cow hide is simply a type of leather nor that a piece of hide is far from large enough for a small tunic. It just disappoints me that instead of thinking he completely dismissed my idea as "invalid". It's not like I was asking for a tanning simulator.
Cleared library...
Total book count: 751

Excepting the fact you only have to do it once.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
Comunity complains game is too easy.
Jeb updates minecraft with the new books, cao cao beans, and whatnot.

Comunity still complains game is too easy.
