There was a major bug where if you place a block at the top of the world building limit the game would crash (including entire servers) the clouds don't cast shadows, which was allowing zombies and skeletons to survive the day time even in open fields, and the trees not growing above the original build height.

Generally when it comes to updates Minecraft revisions break down as follows
X.Y.Z or in this case 1.2.3
[First Integer X]
This is going to be your primary game state, rarely changes. Will stay at 1 untill Mojang decides enough change has been made to the game in total to warant it.
[Second Integer Y]
This typically indicates some content updates have occured.
[Third Integer Z]
This indicates some small bug fix usually related to the most recent content update so you probably won't see anything new.
In this instance we should see more undead mobs bursting into flames during the daylight hours than in 1.2.2
I just though about something... We're Friday... and I read somewhere Notch said they would resume the Friday Seecret updates. So do you think this update could have a few thing that aren't listed in the patch notes?
It's not a sign of Secret Friday updates, it's a sign of the release containing game-affecting bugs that people wouldn't live with for an entire update.
Take note that patches are almost always bug fixes, or small changes. I don't see the big deal really and you shouldn't either.
