So I had an idea, and don't be jerks if this has been brought up already. I wouldn't be surprised .-.
Anyways, in case you haven't seen, there are two new blocks int he terrain.png for the 1.2 update. They're two separate sandstone looking blocks, but instead they have hieroglyphics on them. Also, in case you didn't know, a recent update (12w04a snapshot) made it so Desert Wells that led to nothing started being generated.
In case you don't get the connection I'm trying to make yet, I'm saying that I think the sandstone blocks (and maybe those new circle stone brick things as well, hell if I know) are going to be used for some sort of ancient desert ruins that will be marked above ground by the wells.
Feedback? It's not a genius idea, but I wanna hear what others think.
It makes sense, IMO. And it'd be awesome. Deserts currently have no point except for the fact that villages seem to spawn there more (although I think it just seems that way cause you can see farther in them).
I agree with Joka10 in that I think we'll see some type of tomb perhaps a pyramid or ancient ruins just by looking at the hieroglyphic-like symbols on the block face.
I think mummies would be a nice addition to the game. Although we already have an undead mob in Zombies.
The "face" on the rightmost block could be a dust-devil type mob that would be like a cyclone (think blaze-like) mob that appears in the overworld too.
I have examined them (somewhat) closely... I think we will see pyramids, or some sort of desert tomb. Why? Both sandstone blocks are pictographs, and the one on the left (in the terrain.png) looks almost like MC heiroglyphics.
maybe they will have giant lanky alien type people living in the ruins... similar to the tin foil hat conspiracy that giant lanky aliens built the pyramids.
"Desert Ruins" should spawn twice per world and be very far apart and away from spawn, be in random deserts and contain the new boss mob.
I don't see the point in making them spawn uselessly far away. Like I wouldn't want it so you spawn right beside it, but I don't really like the endless walking and throwing ender eyes to get to a stronghold and wouldn't want the same fate with desert ruins. Apart from that, I agree with you.

IMO, I don't think we really need further boss mobs right now, and the annoyingly low spawn rate of strongholds
already gets to me.
But anyways, there should be an extensive dungeon, with several new mobs, and some extremely special loot at the end. Perhaps part of a broken Pharaoh's scepter, that when pieced together after going through several different temple types, will yield a staff with a rather godly power.
Maybe, it can conjure up a temporary army of the undead that's on your side? Of course by army, I mean about a half-dozen.
I have examined them (somewhat) closely... I think we will see pyramids, or some sort of desert tomb. Why? Both sandstone blocks are pictographs, and the one on the left (in the terrain.png) looks almost like MC heiroglyphics. The left one is divided into 4 parts; a creeper face, an eye, a square thingy, and something I can't be sure of. The right one didn't look like much to me at first... but then I started to think that it looked like a mummy's face. The engraving is in the shape of a kite. The triangle on top is smaller in height than the one on the bottom, if you look at it as two triangles. It consists of alternating dark and light stripes, similar to the bandaging on a mummy. Right where the two triangles meet, the stripe pattern is broken, and there are two hyphen like marks where there would be a light stripe normally. It looked like a funny tornado or cyclone at first, but then I looked at those hyphens for a bit, and they started to seem like eyes. Then the realization that it could be a mummy came to me.
Perhaps we will see tombs with mummy mobs sometime in the future...
EDIT: After looking at the texture on the left more, I have determined that the square thingy is the Mojang symbol and the previously undeterminable thing is supposed to look like the player wearing an Egyptian loincloth. Look at them closely, and you'll probably come to the same conclusion.
That square one doesn't look like the mojang symbol. If it did it would be more like

XD I like the new forum update. Pixel art is so much easier with the icons now
Mummies would be cool as perhaps just a retextured zombie of sorts. I think a good idea for them would be similar to a mob I saw in a horror mod a while ago (cannot for the life of me remember) that only seeks you out (and VERY quickly might I add) when you walk in its radius without sneaking.
These mobs would be silent like creepers until they were hit to make them more efficient. Maybe they could even have a higher damage value or a quicker attack than zombies... Or maybe they could seek you out, grab you, and hold you in place while at the same time damaging you [Megaman Zero mummies anyone? ]
Any way, it is a good theory, but I'm just gonna wait and see about this one. I put way too much thought into the monkey theory when the teaser snapshot of the Ocelot was released a while ago.
Me? I'm hoping that there are underground desert ruins, similar to strongholds. And there would be dispenser traps with arrows and stuff...well only time will tell. Maybe they will be used in the new adventure mode.
I really think that is actually a front-on or 2d cutaway view of a pyramidal structure. the two marks at the front, not being eyes, but actually the side walls (or sphinxes?) of the entrance into the pyramid, the upside down pyramid is underground the sand but still attached to the structure, and might contain a tomb of sorts like the real "Khufu" pyramid.
In any case, can you really deny how awesome pyramids would be, or any type of desert ruin?
i figured that the new block textures might have to do with a planned ruin or fortress for desert biomes. nice idea about a new mob.
I think deserts should have sand storms. every other biome(except nether) has weather. sand storms would be awesome i think.
I personally think it would be awesome to have desert strongholds under the wells? or like small above ground wells then desert strongholds below it? it would be cool. but i think there might be like desert golems and maybe a 'dust devil' that is simmilar to a blaze/ghast that guards a treasure in the desert stronghold and then the golem could garud the surface ruins? i don't really know, but it any of our ideas are true that would be really cool.
p.s. can't wait for it to come out for the 360... 2 weeks till spring... 2 weeks will minecraft?...

maybe they can even be afraid of cats
Why not some kind of sandstone golem? Those would make sense as the guardians of the pyramid.

(didn't think so)
Although... how would they be different from the Strongholds? I mean they have End portals... what could be in store for ruins?
ALso, just saying, New Mob in desert, Mummys. Needs to happen
Back from the End, time to rebuild.
