After i converted my world to the new update it reverted to a previous version from a long time ago. I lost nearly everything i've done the last week. I had the same problem with the snapshots aswell.
I made a backup, but how can i fix this so i can play?
Same here, I'd probably continue playing on 1.1 for now until this gets fixed. Hopefully you made a backup of the jar and your world before you updated right :D. Cheers!

Damn, i didn't. I thought it would create one like it has on every previous version.
****ing **** **** **** ****.
I accidentally deleted my entire save. Great, thanks for this bug which ruined my entire minecraft world. The only world i've managed to keep without starting a new one.
Our SMP server has rolled back to a very old save for no apparent reason. We were running 1.1 and in the last few days had done a lot of building.
Today I woke up, logged in to 1.1 and everything was fine, I made a backup of the map just in case and then updated the server and my client to 1.2.2
When I logged back in the map had been rolled back DAYS. Huge areas have been reset to the state they were in at least a week ago. I can't tell for sure how far back it has been rolled. It makes absolutely no sense because I do a backup every day and just yesterday we did a backup and then tested some traps (TNT traps that ruin parts of the map) and after making sure they worked right, we restored a backup and it was fine, but now when I restore that EXACT SAME backup it reverts to a very old map. I don't know how that's even possible.
And that's not even the worst part, we lost about a weeks worth of work, which is VERY frustrating, but we also lost our ENTIRE nether build. The nether is the same, geographically, as it was before. The terrain is exactly the same as it was, you can see "the ledge where we built the castle" but the castle itself is GONE. Every change we made to the nether has been reset and it looks like we were never there at all.
I'm just going to go out on a limb and guess that you installed the snapshot or one of the snapshots, played for a little bit, and then went back to the previous version and re-converted your world?
Yeah, it's not that big of a deal. There's a simple fix for it if that is the case. The issue is that you converted the old version to the Anvil format, went and continued to advance on your pre-Anvil version, but Anvil won't convert again.
I wrote down instructions in another thread, let me get them back real quick and then I'll edit this post.
Go to your save folder. Back it up. Delete the level.dat and level.dat_old files, then rename level.dat.mcr to level.dat. Go into the rest of the folders and delete all of the files with the extension .mca and then reconvert the map in the snapshot.
Statistics show that people who tell others they need to get a new computer are twice as likely to use "gay" as a negative descriptor and will most likely never see genitals in real life, at least while not in prison.

Thank you so much. Got the world back, the only thing i lost is a couple of levels and an Effiency IV / Fortune lll pick but i can live with that.
Edit: Got the overworld restored. Here is what I did to restore a multiplayer save:
I had to do download the backup from the server, delete level.dat and level.dat_old, rename level.dat_mcr to level.dat. Then go into the region folder and delete every .mca file, but leave all the .mcr files.
Then when you run the game again and load the map it will reconvert all the .mcr files to .mca again and it will be restored.
I still haven't figured out why my SMP nether has been reset if anyone has any ideas.
The rest of this is the original post before I figured it out:

Hey man, I really appreciate the help, unfortunately it isn't working for me, so let me tell you exactly what happened and see if you have any more ideas.
I run an SMP server, a small one, for me and three friends. I backed up my map and then installed one of the snapshots, I played it a bit but when I went into the nether it had been entirely reset. It was obviously the same original area (the seed hadn't changed) it had just removed all our buildings. Thinking this was a bug with the snapshot or something, I just uninstalled the snapshot from our server and my client and went back to 1.1 to wait for an official 1.2 release. My friends and I did a mess of building in the overworld and the nether over the next few days.
Today 1.2.2 comes out. This morning I log in before updating the server or client and everything looks as expected, I backup the map then stop the server, update to 1.2.2 on both server and client, and log back in. Everything on the overworld is reverted to several days ago, looks like about 4 or 5 days of lost building. The nether is, again, completely reset. Obviously still the same terrain, but nothing we built is there.
Now when I download one of the SMP server backups from our server to try and follow your instructions what I get is the world, world_nether, and world_the_end folders. I'm going to ignore the nether and end folders right now cause I don't want to make this more complicated than it needs to be.
If I go into the world folder from the backup I have the folders data, players, region, and the files level.dat level.dat_old and level.dat_mcr, you mention a level.dat.mcr, I don't know if you meant level.dat_mcr (which I have) or if you really did mean level.dat.mcr (which I don't have). I also have session.lock and uid.dat in addition.
I deleted level.dat and level.dat_old and renamed level.dat_mcr to level.dat, it doesn't do anything though, I'm still looking at an old world. Since the other guy says your instructions worked for him, I'm guessing this has something to do with mine being a multiplayer save instead of a single player, any ideas?
The moment you see "New Update Available"
AVOID THAT YES! DO NOT WANT!
Don't update until you have made a copy of your world and saved it somewhere else.
I'm on my 4th generation of my project thanks to worlds being lost or ruined through updates or my own mistakes.
SAVE SAVE SAVE!
Save a copy of your world often, cuz you never know what might happen.
I have a copy on my C drive and an external HDD. can never be too careful
