Guess I'll start as the first non-bot post? Overhauled caves and world height alone have my interest, but decoupling terrain generation from biomes is a long a waited change that is finally happening. OG's would remember the ancient 400+ page topic from long ago. Quite a lot of discussion there, I wonder if some of our fellow posters from there still lurk here every now and then. A lot of the points about the terrain height variation especially has remained true for about a decade. Beta 1.8 neutered the terrain to be flat anywhere that's not extreme hills, and release 1.1 added the "hill" variations which made the world less flat, but still look the same because they used biomes to dictate height still instead of perlin noise like before beta 1.8
But now, unlike 1.7, this is the ACTUAL update that changed the world. I think it's satisfyingly to finally see this kind of overhaul to the terrain, and not just adding more biomes which made the problem worse. Overall I'm loving what I'm seeing with this update already, and as someone who has been waiting for this kind of update I think I might be able to come back to the game soon. Obviously still rough around the edges but I love what they are doing
I don't know whether to write about it here or not. I downloaded "putting 1.18_experimental-snapshot-1" and in the first five game days I did not meet chickens/pigs/cows/sheep, only monsters/Glow Squid and Wandering Traders
the wandering trader was up the first morning with the 1.18 update. however, laddered down to level 14. mineshaft was there so i was able to get a couple of strings and get my fishing rod to get food. that was a blessing. however the creeper explosion messed up the environment. half the mineshaft was intact. gonna look for diamonds.
the mineshaft is full of spawners. at least i think. i have defeated one spider spawner, i know where the next spider spawner is, i found a lot of spiderwebs so that probably means another spider spawner and i think i see one way down a hallway, blocked it off but haven't been down it to confirm it yet. bedrock is at level 4 so this snapshot is not deep. just one diamond so far. died a dozen times but going to get full iron armor. i need to figure out food. fish are ok but i am going to put corral for cattle. that might make my food supply better.
It's in. Multinoise is finally in the overworld. Ever since I saw what was happening with datapacks I was wondering if this would be the case.
As cool as the mountains and caves are right now, it still has a very long way to go. The performance hit and the jankiness and lack of polish is very apparent. Biome and terrain generation on the surface, putting it lightly, is very very rough. It is not hard to tell why this is an experimental snapshot.
The separation of the terrain and biome generation leaves me feeling... Mixed. With time this could be an amazing system that finally dethrones 1.7 from its 'same-5-biomes-for-thousands-of-blocks' tyranny. The notion of the separation is a wonderful idea, but I must say I am... Apprehensive. I am not seeing much smooth or flat land for builds, for example, and finding some specific terrain with a biome to match may be difficult. However given the level of polish over the past few years and Mojang's dedication to quality and satisfaction, I should hope this pans out in great ways.
As for the biomes and caves themselves... Wow. I mean it, just wow. They are wonderful. I hope we see some new structures to go with them and updates to old ones.
The monster spawning change is a very welcome one! No more do you have to spend time finding that one block that's light level 7. ...However, part of me wonders if we'll be seeing some special deep or abyssal monsters int he deepslate layer. We shall see.
There are some extremely surreal mountains out there. They may be labelled "Plains" or "Taiga" but they are definitely mountains. I wouldn't want to try climbing one, but I hope they survive to the release.
i am on day 17 and still cannot find any sheep. i would like to make a bed and get some rest. when i go traveling to find sheep i have to sit in a bunker untill daybreak and then travel again. i have seen one chicken but no cattle, pigs or sheep. i am in forest but travel to taiga, tropical, and others that are close to me. and i can't find redstone yet. i dug down to -10 and got into a huge cave but no redstone yet. i want to make a clock and map. i guess it is challenging. i have lots of food. watermelon and wheat and beets. found a chest with beetroot seeds. thats a good find. now i need pigs...
i wish the goats could be sheared for wool. that should be possible because in the real world they are sheared
I Think A New Mob Should Be A Blue Ringed Octopus, I Think It Would Be Cool And It Should Drop A Tentacle You Can Place Down. Or I Would Like To See An Jellyfish Or Starfish.
But then you climb to the top of it. There's more...
Goes up to 260.
I think this is stuff beyond even what we have seem with world generation. People are really going to bring up though how practical it is to climb over these in survival... Could see that being an issue for some people.

I haven't messed around with 1.18 yet. That being said, that is BEAUTIFUL!
traded a clock and iron leggings for a carrot. finally traveled to find some iron. it was tough at my spawning point to find iron. i needed iron to make my map and protect myself but it was hard. i managed to get chest and leggings and a map but nothing else. world was level with many pools of lava on the surface. when i spawned there was a couple of trees on fire already. now at a new home i am looking for iron. haven't found a village yet but this new place is next to a hill. can't call it a mountain yet but will try to find iron up there if i can't find it digging. found a large cave at level 30. i am having trouble staying alive. even attacted by a skeleton riding a spider. died right away. but a zombie dropped a carrot when he died. that was a blessing. planted carrot and now i will try to make a fishing pole with a carrot to ride a pig. never done that yet in minecraft. hopefully i can ride back to my spawning point and plant carrots there. and working on making a secure place at level 30 to start exploring the cave.
I really love the new caves. They are amazing. I can actually go mining for longer than 5 minutes without it feeling boring. For the first time in ages I had fun exploring a cave. There are a few bugs though. (I'm talking about you, vines on a iceberg.) I still haven't found a mountain yet but I am doing it on survival.

Wow, that is amazing. It is actually a good idea though to spend time climbing them. You will be able to see everything in a huge area,
Has there been any word as to when the next snapshot will come out? I haven't seen any, but I've been rather busy lately.
Not really, but I'd expect them starting to release new snapshots in September. Since the Minecraft Live will (most probably) take place in September again. Most of the developers are still on vacations, so not much happening on Mojang atm.
New snapshot out! On the whole, seems like really good changes... But I'm a little disappointed that desert temples will always occur at the surface. Finding a buried one was always great fun!
hard to look for a desert temple without a map and i have to look for iron and redstone to complete it. still no armor and now even gold is hard to find. redstone is plentiful. why? i found a lush cave and got enough iron for a sword and iron pick and bucket. now out of iron again. explore the cave. no diamonds either.

All in all, excitement is in the air!
Figured it was time for a change.

The blocks should be more exciting .. and the displays more terrifying

Beaches are looking good in experimental 2, though I do wish they were a little more flat. Height variation is good though.

New mountains make you feel small.
Like this one. Seems pretty tall, right?

Opinion: BIG WORLD GENERATION IS MY FAVORITE in 1.18
