I'll admit, I'm pretty disappointing that the Caves and Cliffs update has been essentially delayed. I understand Mojang's health concerns, and made sure to go over their announcements, and one important factor seemed to go completely unmentioned- the new release will now be available conveniently around the holiday season.
Maybe I'm looking too deep into this- I've never had much reason to doubt Mojang in the past, particularly given the increased quality of these new updates. The Nether update was announced in September 2019, and released around Summer of 2020, giving a couple months less than a year from announcement to official release. The Caves and Cliffs update was announced in October, and so a Summer release would be more or less expected.
Now, obviously, you can't compare apples to oranges- these two updates are quite different, and we can't know whether one is more technically difficult than the other. The combination of the pandemic, and possible technical difficulties regarding the more drastic changes to worlds would mean it would make sense to delay the update...
...But there's some nagging part of me that can't help but think the decision to move the update to the holiday season, while providing enough features this summer to keep us intrigued, might have more to do with having the release coincide with the holidays than some of the other reasons they mentioned.
Am I reading too much into this? Perhaps I'm just being paranoid, but I couldn't help but point this out. What do you think?
I don't think it's paranoia, nor something being hidden, I think they're just riding the 1.16 wave out because it was a well-liked update, and because they're unsure how to implement 1.17 - both technically-wise and game-design-wise (not everyone likes the increased complexity of caves, while others may think it's too little instead).
Releasing the update on the holidays feels a bit cliche, that's all I can say on that choice. I don't' think it really matters though. The point is "it's a long time away".
The thing that bothers me the most is that most of the features they said are technically challenging are alredy done in the previous snapshots - the height limit, the caves, the mountains. The generation still needs tweaking, but most of the stuff is ready. That's why I think that they are just using covid as an excuse and are pushing the release back to maybe match the release of some other competing game (probably Hytale).
And the content we are getting now is basically nothing - a bunch of new blocks, some useless mobs and a basic rework of ores that was overdue at least for 5 years. This doesn't justify a major update.

Pretttty much my thoughts here. I just didn't want to word them as such.
I can't say I'm all that surprised that it got pushed back considering how quickly summer is approaching and we don't even have the mountain generation in Java. My main surprise is how far it's being pushed back, and there won't even be archeology features in the second half. I remember we got the Pretty Scary Update in a very short amount of time.
I don't see how they'd be competing with Hytale. They've expressed support for it, and Hytale has no release date. Something else to remember is that Mojang are very laid back. They don't do crunch or any abusive practices like what every other studio does out there (which is terrible) and they intend in preserving that.
Another thing to remember is that they're giving worlds the biggest change since the world format change in 1.2, where they changed from Region to Anvil. In that time a lot has changed, and if they mess up even slightly, it means lots of angry and sad people and some will have years of work put down the drain.
I still can't say I'm not disappointed with how far back it is being held however.

I wouldn't say the Goat is a useless mob though
imagine being on extreme hills that was made of mostly stone, all the grass blocks were buried in snow so the only source of milk there would be the Goats. This would be the only way to get milk in extreme conditions where cows were unable to spawn.
Good for getting rid of bad omen after defeating Pillager Captains, so you don't have to deal with a raid next time you encounter a village.

I don't mind if I need to wait 2022-23 for the next release as long as the update is well done.
Yes, the big changes are in snapshots, but they're currently not compatible with existing worlds and if they were going to be released in the next few months that would probably have to have happened by now.
The easier stuff is mostly done so it seems a good plan to finish that off first then really concentrate on the hard bits. I'd rather wait for two or three properly finished updates than suffer through a rushed one that didn't quite work or needed months of fixing afterwards.
To put it in perspective,1.8 was released in September 2014 and 1.9 in February 2016. Yes, that was more than a year.

It is taking them so long for a reason, I think.New Cave updates will make caves much bigger. The Pretty Scary Update, for the Nether, was back then,at a simpler time, just loads of netherrack and maybe a Blaze bridge or Nether fortress.Caves have TONS more stuff,so designing and generating them will be tough.
The nether's generation seems more complex to me than most caves.
I honestly think it's a balance issue and a version merging issue.
I've recently been looking at the new 1.18 generation in the experimental snapshots, and I have to say, I'm thoroughly impressed. I think it's safe to say that I'm probably reading too much into this- this is by far one of the most impressive updates I've seen to date, and at the beginning of this I suppose I was under the impression that the update would consist of minor tweaks to improvements to world generation... not, say, a stunning, complete overhaul of the entire Overworld.
...So, I suppose while a Holiday release is more convenient, it makes sense for such an enormous update, especially given the development issues of dealing with the pandemic and more or less rewriting the entire world generation system to boot. ...I'm honestly beginning to think Mojang can do no wrong.
Oh definitely. There's a few more hurdles to development than 'how are we going to do this technically' and 'how do we do this right after COVID', and that includes 'how do we integrate x and y into gameplay effectively' and 'how do we do x and y without causing an uproar in our greasy-haired fans'. I think this reply applies to most replies in this topic that are taking one at Mojang for being a bit late.
I had doubts in my confidence in Mojang after 1.6 and 1.7 but over time they have improved. I fully approve everything added from 1.9 on, although I have no use for the World of Color's contents aside the recipe book.
The autojump, recipe book, and search feature in said book, are what modernized the game into something friendly as far as I'm concerned.

Because having competition and besting it would prove MC is the best sandbox cube game out there.
Niche but okay
Updates, yeah. But snapshots, no.
