It's a lot harder to see the difference between the ripe potatoes, wheat and netherwart and the nearly ripe ones now.
Fully ripe potatoes have longer vines, netherwart's shape looks completely unchanged so idk what you mean there, and I did struggle with the wheat at first but you can sorta tell easily which crops are ripe and which ones are really ripe with time (the nearly ripe ones are a little orangey whereas fully ripes are pale yellow).

Yes but it's hard to tell the length of the potato plants when you are looking down at them.
There is also a small difference in the brown bit at the very bottom, see the first picture in post #57 (the after part) the left potato plant is almost ripe and only has one bump in the brown line, the ripe one on the right has three bumps, whereas in 1.13 the unripe ones were entirely green so you could just run down a row breaking everything yellow and releasing the mouse button when they were all green.
The wheat is sorta ok in good lighting but harder at night or dusk and dawn.
They've done something odd to the netherwart so the ripe bulbs change size depending on from which direction you look, it used to be you could tell they were ripe when there was no gap between the bulbs, now the surest way is height, since I don't need very much netherwart I solved the problem by having a lower path between the rows so they are closer to eye level and it becomes obvious which ones are the tallest.
I like most of them, especially the cobblestone, that's a big improvement. I did prefer the V2 wood texture though, it was just a bit nice to look at. One of the biggest improvements was definitely on the glass though, you can actually see through it now!!!
I hate the new textures. It messes with mod makers who are used to the original vanilla textures and base their modded items on those looks. Not only that, but the textures look horrendous. Two things I hate: new texture updates and items & mobs that are not 16x16. That is why Minecraft 1.12.2 will always be the best edition out of all of them.
I'm not too wild about the new stone and cobblestone (I liked having "smooth stone" be the default), but rather like most of the plants It does look like the new netherrack texture is not half as eye-hurtingly ugly as the old, and I'll forgive a lot for that. In general, the new items look to be smoother and more detailed than the old textures... which is fine when I'm playing full-screen, not so much when I'm playing in a window and everything is smaller.

I did some CraftTweaker scripts for Mystical Agriculture. They fill in a couple of small gaps in MA, and also let you make or duplicate not only vanilla plants, but the blocks, plants and wood from Quark and Biomes O'Plenty. Also spawn eggs for most vanilla mobs! The scripts are here on Github.
The total amount of colors per new texture is less than the ones of the old textures. I make most of the textures for my mods go better with new textures and I might make some that go better with programmer art.

Used to tolerate them, but I've decided that I dislike most of them. Too smooth that I have trouble making the blocks out and I've resorted to Programmer Art plus a resource pack to backport textures for new blocks and items. Why did Mojang have to decide to change textures that were there for up to over 8 years?

I have the opposite impression; things are very rough looking and not smooth at all. There's heavy contrasting lines everywhere.
I've largely used resource packs when playing, so the texture changes escaped me until I recently saw the game at its default look, and I was surprised at how rough it looks. The resource pack I use is one of the "tries to stay faithful to the default look but increases resolution" type ones, and thankfully it hasn't (yet?) imitated this rough look.

Because they were a mess of textures made by several different people, and they were trying to streamline them to be done by one person only.
The old Netherrack, for example, is now horrible mess to me. So horrible, actually, that I can't stand it anymore.
I now like most of them ... but I still feel like I miss the old Netherrack whish I found more "Nether-ish" but I have not tried playing old versions since the changes.
Though, not sure if I would like Nylium on the old Netherrack.
Netherrack is actually one of the blocks I like far better now (and in contrast with my overall opinion, is one of the new blocks that is less rough/contrasted looking). It also makes more sense as the new color to smelt into Nether Bricks.
To elaborate onto my prior post, I'm not saying the new textures, collectively, are worse. I'd have to see full comparisons anyway, as I mostly use resource packs. My initial impression is just that at least a few particular blocks (planks come to mind) are more rough/contrasted looking, and I'm not sure I like that particular part of things.
I for one find it hard to tell some of the blocks apart in certain situations, I can't tell which wheat is fully grown and sometimes when I'm caving and I come across patches of diorite in the twilight, it looks like cobble to me and I think I found a spawner - which happened to me a couple of times actually. Also I don't like that some of the more vibrant colors were basically removed with the new textures, like the old cactus green for example. i feel the new textures diminished the color palette or made it more natural, but I really miss some of the old colors.

Just testing.

Meh, they aren't so bad.

I love the new textures. Finally I can play without using a texture pack. I especially like wheat now.
