If Mojang is going to give good reasons why not to add sharks, the least they could do is come up with gameplay reasons why they shouldn't be added. The Parrots and Cookies thing is reasonable, considering if my friend has a parrot and I don't know how to take care of one, and my friend is serving cookies at their house, I might apply Minecraft's logic to that situation.
The shark thing is dumb, because it's unlikely that I'll ever see a shark anywhere in my life except an aquarium. Heck, it's likely that the people with the equipment to go find sharks in the ocean have been trained on how to deal with sharks. Will this game encourage people to kill sharks? Not likely, but even if it does, it's only going to encourage people that already had the intention of killing them anyway.
This game hasn't encouraged me to kill rabbits in real life, a very common animal that I'm likely to find nearby my house. And if I was ever faced with an unowned cow and I had a suitable weapon, unless I'm desperate for food, it's not likely that I'm going to kill and butcher an animal just because a game told me how meat works...
I can think of a few gameplay reasons why I might not want sharks, which are reasons likely to be actual problems. First off, unless they despawn, they add to the hostile mob count, so less Zombies and Skeletons can spawn. (There are some solutions to this, though. They could be made neutral, but unless they have a good use when tamed, I feel like this would make them a bit pointless. Alternatively, they could spawn in only certain locations, like Deep Ocean biomes, but then they'll effect mob spawns when caving.)
The second, less important reason that I can think of is that I kinda want to build underwater without hostile-mob intervention. The ocean isn't really a place where a threat is needed, because if I'm trying to do work underwater, I'm probably going to be too busy to worry about sharks. (Although the new sunken ships might change this...)

My avatar is a texture from a small block game I made in Python. It's not very good and it probably won't work if you install it.
I'm very alone in my Minecraft worlds as I don't have a very good internet connection to run a server. If you're like me, you might be interested in my Posse mod suggestion.
I don't know, personally I find the reason silly but I'd rather a unique water hostile than a shark. There are so many awesome water mobs that could be thought up and added instead of a boring shark.
Something similar to a Stingray that can jump out of the water and glide for a short distance before diving, that attempts to land on players to hurt them.
A mob that doesn't attack directly but generates whirlpools to drown players.
A tamable mob that you can right click to grab onto and it allows for fast swimming underwater.
A mob that hides among seaweed and grabs players and tries to hold them at the bottom of the sea (think Grindylow).
There, it took me 3 minutes to come up with 4 potential mobs that are infinitely more interesting than a shark.

I still think it'd be good to have a shark. It's something you would expect, and it would also be an aesthetically pleasing predator; you could have it be at the top of the water and it wouldn't make your build look bad, because it fits in. What I mean is that a mob that is completely unique (like the Guardian) that is visible from above the water could be frustrating due to its appearance.
But seriously your adding water specific weapons ? Everyone wanted the angler fish mob thing and now we get some flying thing, Which don't get me wrong that's really cool. But we really need a hostile mob in the oceans it just adds more depth to the game play. Doesn't have to be a shark just create some fantasy creature. Angler fish type thing that only spawns in deep oceans that glows at night, oh wait that's what everyone wanted and voted for. Guardians that can't venture past monuments isn't enough really. Here's to hoping ! Going to enjoy the new update either way.

Sure it would look good, but all of that is subjective and any of those ideas I put in my post could look similar to a shark but not be one. If anything that would be Mojang's way of doing this. Make it look similar to a shark but then call it something else and give it different behavior. Then they didn't 'add sharks' but people get them in some sense.

I guess they could do that. The thing about sharks is that it's one of the few things that the community seems to agree should be added. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's ever been a large group of people saying that sharks shouldn't be added.
Another reason sharks would be a good addition is that they feel right. I know that sounds a little silly, but that's really what gameplay is all about.
So what, Mojang is a bunch of tree huggers now? ? ? I can't believe what she said, this younger community really is making a difference, and not in a good way. But to be fair it's not entirely their fault, Mojang just thinks they are stupid enough to somehow go up to a shark.
"With no rules to follow, this adventure, it's up to you", Damn I want Notch back.
With their logic they might as well remove trees, "Trees are really misunderstood, people harvest them for money and think their useless, but they actually give us oxygen."

"...and we wouldn't want kids going up to trees and punching them!"
That statement, if I'm to be frank, almost feels like it has tinges of salt over the cookies and parrots fiasco. Not yours though, I mean Helen's. (Whoever the devil they are)
Definitely. In the video, she compares her reasoning on the Sharks thing with the cookies and parrots thing in a very singsong matter-of-factly tone which really irritated me. Oh well, add Sharks to the list of NEVERS in a game about boundless imagination and creativity; Right next to half slabs.
Maybe Mojang is planning a hostile fish mob like a shark, with an original name, drop, and behavior. TBH this makes even more sense than just adding sharks, because it allows the developers to not be bound by real life. It also explains why they aren't telling us and are making a excuse online, because they don't want to announce it yet.
Found this online, I think it's fake but this could be similar to what they're planning.

Sharks would make less people want to do anything with the ocean! Not only do we have to deal with the fish (Which I actually do like and the dolphins) But when your building underwater which is already painful enough you have sharks attacking you and floating all around your base! Or your trying to sail somewhere all of a sudden a shark comes out of the water eats your boat and swims away or you kill it. Now your stuck in the ocean without a boat and possibley will either A: Quit due to there being no land around B: Drown C: Find the closest island and lose everything you had. Sharks would be a terrible idea to add to minecraft.

Couldn't you make this same argument for why zombies, skeletons, spiders, and creepers are bad additions to the game?

Sharks may not be a good fit as a simple hostile mob, but perhaps they could fill the role of the neutral mob that can be aggro'd under specific conditions. The simplest and least accurate way is to simply have sharks aggro if your health goes below a certain threshold. There's currently no way to differentiate damage types, so you'd trigger sharks simply by starting to drown or starve and that probably shouldn't happen. By adding in damage-type effects (bleeding, starving [or just reusing the hunger effect], drowning, suffocating, burning) we can have mobs trigger only on certain types of damage with this feature extending way beyond just sharks (for example, a mermaid mob that comes up to kiss you while drowning to refill your air bubbles).

That could possibly be interesting like the polar bears or the sharks might be programmed to only attack if you attack a shark? Maybe that would make sharks fit better into game. Or even if your just holding a fish in your hand a shark could attack you? (Btw this stuff would make great for a mod.) ((((I need a mod maker #Shameless-plug))))

The other mobs fit into the idea of minecraft and are usally used for mob farms or other things + These mobs can be stopped by light so anyone not wanting a creeper, zombie, skeleton, spider or anything else they can place a simple torch down to stop them from ever spawning again (In that area atleast)

I honestly don't want to see sharks in MC, I want Mojang to come up with their own hostile see creatures.

Don't get fooled by that. That's just a fake image created by Dark Corners to trick small children into giving him ad revenue.
dont look at this
I know that that exact picture is fake, but it gave me the idea that Mojang might be making something similar.
Let's just hope that this is the case. If they aren't doing sharks, I hope they are doing something very similar.
