The only thing which does worry me a little is how much lag this is going to generate. Now, sure, in the current snapshots you can already notice a decent increase in FPS because of the improved graphics engine, but even so... This looks like a lot of extra stuff getting added. I recall the squids having a maximum spawning amount due to lag concerns, and this looks like there will be a ton of water mobs coming around.
Well, I don't think it's going to cause much lag at all. Considering you have to be in rendered chunks in order for mobs to move around and particles to form, and considering most of the ocean is still going to be 90% nothing but water, fps shouldn't be too much of a problem.
I watched that video, but I'm not sure if that was an official picture or not. Also, they haven't (to my knowledge) confirmed that it is coming in this update.
Maybe there is going to be sharks too? If you look at this picture, you can see another fish shadow but the tail is vertical like a sharks instead of a dolphin:
I know.... I was so excited when I saw this. (I watched Minecon Earth live.)
It makes me wonder what other things will be in the update; Jeb said there was much more that he didn't reveal. Sharks? Kraken? Bigger Boats? Who knows. All of this makes the case for larger boats or ships a lot more plausible and possible.
I think Jeb might have said that the enchantment that makes you go with the trident when thrown underwater or in rain is called "Riptide", although yes, I think the name "Slipstream Dash" does suit that ability more. Maybe Riptide was an old name and Jeb got it wrong. Or Slipstream Dash was an old name and the person who wrote the article got it wrong. Correct me if I'm wrong.
My theories on what "Impaler" does - I'm hoping it either pierces armor (i.e. ignores more armor points when damaging) or, when throwing the trident, it can pierce through multiple enemies.
My first thought on tridents was that they would have different materials like tools- so iron tridents, golden tridents, and diamond tridents (Jeb would be holding diamond in the picture). Though now that I've read like the theories I would prefer it to be a drop of Elder Guardians or made of prismarine.
My thoughts on each of the announced new features:
Water bubbles - Ehh, they look cool. Really I don't have many opinions on these one way or the other.
Tridents - HELL. FREAKING. YES!! I've been wanting these in the game for at least FOUR YEARS. I've made numerous suggestions to various people about the addition of Tridents, so this is probably the feature in this update I'm most hyped for. It's been YEARS since we got an entirely new weapon in the game. I really hope they make it uncraftable and something you actually have to work hard to get - it seems pretty powerful, especially with its own special enchantments. REALLY happy about this one - can't wait to get me a trident and slash monsters to death!
Kelp - These look awesome with their flowing animated texture. What more can I say? It's great that we're FINALLY getting some life underwater!
Coral - Ah coral, the idea that was abandoned by Notch 7 years ago because he found them too hard to texture. I think really this is a reminder of just how far Mojang have come in the last almost-decade. As the game has grown, so have them as developers. Also I can't wait to see how many crazy variations they can make of this, now free from the shackles of the block ID limit.
Fish - My only complaint here is that these weren't added 7 years ago.
Water Physics - Hoo boy this one's controversial. Millions of maps and contraptions are going to be broken by this. But come on guys, the current water mechanics suck and using fences to stop water looked hideous anyway with that air pocket. As someone who never made maps or big intricate water features, this doesn't bother me so much, but I can see why this feature will annoy so many.
Shipwrecks - We don't have enough information on this feature for me to really comment, but they have potential to be cool. It really depends what's in them or what their use is.
Dolphins - YES. YES. YES!!! 2nd most hyped feature outside of the Trident - this game has been in dire need of this for YEARS!!! I also really like their ability to hunt treasures, and they're tameable! I'm getting me a pet dolphin!
Icebergs - They're pretty cool I guess. Yeah.
Mob B - Well, I wanted mob A to win - even more so now that we know that 1.14 is actually the aquatic update and would have fitted in better with the ocean theme by giving us a new ocean monster. We don't actually have any ocean monsters outside of the Ocean Monuments. But I'm just glad mob C didn't win. I guess I'll learn to like this mob when it comes.
So yeah, all-in-all, I think this will be the best update in a long long time, and I am really hyped for this 7-year-overdue update! Better late then never, eh?

Yeah I just hope they add some sort of underwater danger, since Mob A wasn't the one chosen. I guess it's time to make some suggestions...
I'm happy to know this was announced - fantastic. Now get the darn thing done and quit blabbing about it before I fire you Microsoft and move to another game because you are too slow.
Sometimes I wonder, if there were enough people in the community to fork a project off Minecraft - similar thoughts and design but with all the features and stuff people want now - not dolled out every year at a major "shake the money tree" event to drag me into a Microsoft store where they still cannot show off the one feature that made me WANT to use Windows 10 in the first place - Holo lens not cheesy VR where I hold controllers to move a 3D movie around my peripheral view with little joysticks. Frankly, there hasn't been much improvement in VR (the functionality not rendering ability) since the 1990's!
Then again, I think that's where Microsoft wants their graphics and features to stay, behind the curve. Frankly, this should be pushed the week of the event - permitting users to voice thoughts that day. I bet Microsoft staff dislike Minecraft as much as Apple staff disliked iPods in the beginning so maybe that won't work for them, after all the parties were all at Microsoft locations using their "narrow-minded" vanilla versions. This is how good competition gets started though and how Google came to be.
Insomnia is going to be disabled on vanilla servers because of Mob B. Insomnia might give u some potion effects u cant get rid of unless you sleep. The problem with this is that on a server with over 30 people IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE EVERYONE GO TO SLEEP. There will be people logging on constantly and not to mention the mods would have to be actively watching players 24/7. So Mob B already ruins Vanilla servers with their status. Thanks for nothing player base and mojang (seriously our own player base is a problem now as of minecon earth. We have noobs, hackers, and the players who are smart. The noobs were to blame for Mob B since they probably dont realize what it will do to smp servers).

Then again, maybe they'll just take a page from current server sleep mechanics. On a server, only a certain number of people have to sleep in order to change to daytime. This could be applied in reverse, sort of, where those who sleep also remove the insomnia affect from everyone else as well (even if they didn't sleep). It would be the first effect of its kind, as previously the only effects you could get from someone else triggering it were command-based or via a limited group mechanic (ie, splash potions).
Worrying about the important bits, are we?
The quickest way to my heart is with a smile.
Oh, and a white-oak stake.
Heard that it was a reference to something. Hadn't got it at all. Still, it is important.
I dunno. I'm pretty sure its nothing more than some fancy syntax. ^^

OP, could you add the wood variants into your update post? Here's the source: https://twitter.com/beta_mcpe1/status/931958681209655297

Could we be getting the legendary life vest?

It's good that they're finally adding a new weapon, a throwable melee weapon has been due for quite some time now.
I'm going to have to change so many maps after this update because I've used fences to stop water.
On the other hand, maps with fences used as barricades in water are going to look super nice. Right now it has that gap of air that looks horrible.
I'm so looking forward to kelp and coral to decorate underwater. I have so many maps I wanted to change with those

That is speculation. There is plenty of reason to believe they can swoop down and attack you. High altitudes is a very vague term.
