I've been playing with this snapshot and started a temporary little world, and so far I'm loving what we have so far, despite any odd bugs with crafting benches and furnace recipe pages crashing the game. Slabs and stairs etc underwater and new prismarine type blocks (Stairs and slabs) are nice, but for me the best thing are turtles and swimming. The swimming animation is so fluid, and I think it's something that was really needed! Baby turtles are really cute also. Tridents look fun.
Was in two minds about floating objects in water at first as I might have to re-think the water aspect of my mob farm now things float in water, however; dying in the ocean in the past and trying to find your items in the dark depths of water was always a nightmare. The use of suction and acceleration of using magma blocks and soul sand in the ocean respectivley is going to makes things more interesting in both travel (magma) and creations (Soul sand). The plus aspects very much out-weighs the bad for me. A clever aspect is though going through the bubbles from magma in the water seems to renew your water meter currently. Overall with the sea, even with just sea grass and kelp the sea looks livlier already.

Really looking forward to the coral and fish now that the kelp and turtles are in.
Same here. With the new place-able fish, the ponds in my English garden are going to look a million times better.
Not as happy when it comes to coral, though. Turns out it dies when outside of water and turns white, which really limits any building potential outside of underwater constructions. ;-;
Yeah, the snapshot looks great! Only thing is...the phantom mob's AI is very derpy. Again, though, it is a snapshot, so this is expected.
I also have something to gripe about with the Phantom. Is anyone else not mildly triggered that the phantom looks completely different from the model we were shown at Minecon? Like, it looks almost completely different. They pulled a horse and made it look so simple and derpy.

The torch trick is fixed now, since getting out of water doesn't give you 100% instantly anymore.
This [the removal of an instant reset to the oxygen bar] is a comparatively little discussed change…
I understand why the torch trick was nerfed [it provided a cheap and easy way to emulate waterbreathing in many situation], but wonder what the reaction will be to the likely response…
I've figured I would need to build many "breath stations" both in lines as exploring and around any underwater project sites.
The most popular current model (two slime blocks and a torch, substituting a sign for longer term use) is so fast and easy to put up/take down that they don't tend to accumulate.
With the need for more time consuming builds I can see the new models being left standing as not worth the annoyance to recover the resources.
Given Ben Franklin's attributed "stepfather of invention" (the general laziness of humanity ), I do not expect the typical "breath station" will be such as to please the aestheaticians

Speaking of baby turtles, what does it take to get some? The wiki says eggs take about 6 minutes to hatch, but that is blatantly false in my experience. I have waited a couple hours, and they've only advanced one stage.

You must wait until night. They do not hatch during the day.
You must wait until night. They do not hatch during the day.
Huh. That would account for it. Does torchlight prevent them from hatching?
They do advance stages during the day, though I've only had it happen once. The rest have stayed at the same stage indefinitely.
EDIT: I'm starting to see the method in Mojang's madness. You have to stay up at night to protect your turtle eggs... but if you stay up, you risk the phantoms.
so I've been playing around with boats and how they react to magma blocks and Soulsand, and then things started to get... finicky. first, magma blocks work how one would expect, if a boat's over them to long, the boat sinks, but then soul sand and boats are a bit more interesting. when a boat is overtop soul sand the bubbles it creates gather beneath the boat, and then after about 3 seconds the boat is launched about 20 blocks into the air, or about 20 feet (i may run some calculations later to determine just how much energy that is). now in theory this would allow for a VERY simple elevator, however, i found that if a player ir riding the boat, it tries to launch, but fails. however, i am certain this is a glitch, as any other creature i tested (cows, Zombies, Shulkers, and Parrots) all made the trip. however, after testing the boats i noticed some weird behavior with the bubbles, so i experimented with how exactly they spawn. and it seems... things i am certain about is that A. there needs to be atleast 2 blocks of water above the soulsand/magma blocks for the column to spawn and 2. there are never as many columns as there are blocks. in my testing, i could get 1 column with a 1x2 of soulsand, and i could get either 3 or 4 commas with a 2x3. so i think it's based on how you place the water. could be a bug though. In addition, the boat flier up on regular intervals, so can make a synchronized boat wave now

Do phantoms need solid blocks to spawn on, or can they spawn mid-air?
Mid-air spawning would be pretty bad for floating-island-style bases...
The insomnia mechanic isn't implemented yet so they don't actually spawn naturally yet. No one knows for sure, but they are supposed to spawn in the air I believe.
EDIT: They do infact spawn now as of the latest snapshot.

I don't mess with snapshots enough to care about that as long as it is implemented. I hope it is like only above grass blocks or something, not sure it's confusing.

My impression, both from the pre-vote bits and what little has come out since, is that they are intended to spawn 'at high altitide' and 'in the air' …
Given the stated purpose (to penalize those who don't use beds as MS/Mj thinks they ought), it would seem MobB would have to be able to spawn mid-air or one could avoid them simply by staying out of render distance from biomes such as Extreme Hills.
I agree, BTW, that the mid-air spawning is one of the serious flaws in the current MobB implementation…
[With the exception of the initial ender dragon, every other mob is avoidable through simple (if sometimes time consuming) building techniques:
light and/ or all floors being of non-spawnable blocks (or removing water for guardians) will provide safety
even endermen teleports can be defeated with water and or low (<2.9 block) ceilings.
No other mob spawns unblockably or coerces a certain in-game behavior (beyond adapting one's "mining" and "crafting").]

The two phantoms that attacked me while I was out looking for turtles most certainly spawned naturally... I was bobbing around in the ocean just off the coast of a small (and flat) island, and they were circling overhead when I noticed them, so almost definitely spawned mid-air. It's now been three minecraft days/nights since then and I haven't seen any others (still sailing/swimming around that same patch of ocean, hoping to find a second turtle so i can get them breeding), so either there's only a small chance of them spawning if you've been up five days or the counter is reset once they've spawned whether you sleep or not. (in the current snapshot, anyway)
They didn't do too much damage - in my fully-enchanted diamond gear - and a couple of arrows took care of them. I don't expect that my sleeping patterns will change (i mostly just sleep to reset spawn - i have a large world with houses/villages/outposts scattered all over the place, and like to travel and explore), but i'll definitely be keeping half an eye on the sky when I'm out in the open at night whether i'm sailing, running around fighting monsters, or working on village construction projects...
Maybe there is going to be sharks too? If you look at this picture, you can see another fish shadow but the tail is vertical like a sharks instead of a dolphin:
Actually, if you look at one of the original fish mob and compare it to the mob in the picture (and if you look closely you can see its eyes and you will know) it is a original fish (the grey one) that's what it is. ;P
Mojang has confirmed that sharks will not be added to the game, but Jeb/Jens (the lead Minecraft developer) has stated that there will be an underwater hostile mob added in the Update Aquatic (1.13).

Really? I didn't know that. It was probably a snapshot I missed. Did he give us any tips?

If anyone had to guess, about what month would be a good guess for the next official release to drop?
I'd probably guess either April or May.
