In case you didn't know, there is a new Minecraft update in progress: Update Aquatic! Here I will post all known news of this update as it comes out. Before I start, I would like to say a huge thank you to user Kobro. He provided a lot of the pictures, information, and formatting for the post, including the awesome image above. I would also like to point out that I do not own any of these images, and that most of the information and pictures I have have come from the Minecraft Wiki.
Dolphins
Health: 10 ()
Dolphins spawn in every single ocean biome except frozen oceans. They are attracted to items floating around in the water, and are friendly in nature. However, be sure not to hit them, as attacking even just one dolphin will result in all nearby dolphins being aggressive to you, similar to the behavior of zombie pigmen.
They have a unique use in that they lead you to treasure after you feed them fish (raw cod).
The Phantom ("The Monster of the Night Skies")
Health: 20 ()
The phantom is attracted to players who haven't slept. It spawns in groups at night at high altitudes and swoops down to damage players with high insomnia. When killed, phantoms drop phantom membranes that can be brewed into potions of slow falling. These membranes are now the only way to repair elytra without using another pair of elytra.
Using commands, you can also control the size of the phantom using the {Size:x} tag, just as you can with slimes.
Drowned
Health: 20 ()
These nasty things spawn in rivers and oceans. They will sometimes have tridents, in which case they will use them as a throwing weapon and drop them when killed. The drowned attack baby turtles and turtle eggs just as skeletons and zombies do. If a zombie drowns, it will become a drowned. The drowned will sometimes drop a nautilus shell.
Turtles
Turtles spawn on beaches. When bred with sea grass, they lay eggs that will hatch into tiny baby turtles.
When you jump on these, eggs, they will have a chance of breaking. Zombies and skeletons are hostile to baby turtles, and will even try to destroy the eggs themselves.
Turtle Helmet & Turtle Potion
Through methods unknown of for now, you can collect "turtle shell pieces." You can use five of these to make a turtle shell, which can be worn on your head like a helmet (in which case it would provide as much protection as an iron helmet and give you an extra 10 seconds of breathing time while underwater) or brew it into the "Potion of the Turtle Master." This potion gives you high levels of resistance and slowness, similar to how a turtle is very slow but very strong due to its shell.
Tridents!
This is a new weapon. So far we don't know how to obtain it, but we do have its abilities and texture shown already. You can use it as a melee weapon like a sword, or throw it. There is a special enchantment you can get on it that makes it come back to you after you throw it. There is also another enchantment that makes the player go with the trident when its thrown. Also note that you can only use certain abilities of the trident when underwater or if exposed to rain.
Above is another picture of it. There are multiple enchantments for the trident. Riptide makes you go with the trident as you throw it, Impaler makes it do more damage to underwater creatures, Loyalty makes the trident come back to you after you throw it, and Channeling causes lightning to strike when you hit something with the trident as long as there is currently a thunderstorm. Note that the Riptide enchantment cannot be combined with Channeling or Loyalty.
As a melee weapon, tridents do 9 () damage. with 9.9 damage per second. As a ranged weapon tridents do 8 () damage.
New Swimming Animation
You can now sprint underwater by double-tapping w. This picture is from thisminecraft.net page.
Bubble Columns
These are caused by placing magma blocks under water. All entities and players fall downwards through bubble columns there is no water there, making it a potential risk when navigating the seas.
On the other hand, you can use soulsand to create upwards bubble columns. These push players and entities up.
Kelp
This is kelp. Note that its texture is actually animated.
Dried Kelp
After harvesting normal kelp, you get this item:
If you cook this in a furnace, you get dried kelp.
This can be eaten to restore half a hunger shank and 0.6 saturation. Note that it can be eaten faster than other foods. It can be then crafted into dried kelp blocks.
These can be crafted back into normal dried kelp.
Sea Grass
Like coral, sea grass grows in the ocean. It can actually be obtained through bonemealing the ground when underwater. When mined with shears, it drops its item.
Coral
Coral can be found in coral reefs. There are blocks, "plants," and fans. There are five variations of each. Coral blocks and coral fans become "dead" (gray) when no longer in contact with water. You can only harvest coral with a Silk Touch pickaxe.
Sea Pickles
Sea pickles generate on coral in the ocean. They emit light, but only when underwater. Just like with turtle eggs, there can be up to 4 sea pickles in one block. The more there are, the more light is given off. Sea pickles can be smelted to make lime dye.
Fish Mobs
Cod will spawn in Cold, Normal and Lukewarm oceans, and like to be with other cod.
Salmon will spawn in Frozen and Cold oceans and rivers, and like to be with other salmon. They can be in 3 different sizes.
Pufferfish will spawn in Lukewarm and Warm oceans, and like to be alone
As you can see, the pufferfish has multiple stages. It will grow to its full stage and poison you when you are near it. When a fish mob dies, it drops its corresponding item. The fish can also be picked up using a bucket of water, after which they can be placed down.
There are also now tropical fish, which include the clownfish.
When spawning, tropical fish have a 90% chance to look like one of the fish above. However, they also have a 10% chance to spawn with a randomized look.
Each tropical fish that is randomized can have one of 2 shapes, 6 patterns, 16 base colors, and 16 secondary colors. User Uniquitous has calculated that there are 3,072 possible tropical fish.
Shipwrecks!
These will of course be found deep in the ocean, and will contain loot chests. The loot includes, but is not limited to:
- Iron
- Gold
- Diamond
- Lapis
- Emeralds
- Bottle o' Enchanting
- Treasure Map
- Compass
- Leather Armor
New(ish) Water Physics!
Jens (jeb_) has now confirmed that water physics will work slightly different than shown above. Here are some quotes from one of his Mixer streams:
"The things that we showed at Minecon may have been too much, so we're trying more simple way of doing the water physics, more similar to the old style. The most important thing is to have non solid blocks inside water, like stairs and fences, but the way we're gonna do it is that if you have a fence and you put water on it, that's gonna be a water source block, but water itself won't flow through fences [...] because that would break a lot of contraptions that people make using trapdoors and such."
"We want water physics to work like they do today. The difference is that you can put water on the fence, and then the fence will be inside water"
You can now place water inside of slabs and stairs.
Dinnerbone has actually been working on the fluid engine, though, and has made water technically separate from other blocks. Water may act more like what was shown originally at Minecon in the future.
Nautilus Shell
The nautilus shell can be obtained through fishing and is also a rare drop from the drowned. It is one of the ingredients used to craft the conduit.
Heart of the Sea
The Heart of the Sea can be found in treasure chests. It is one of the ingredients used to craft the conduit.
Conduit
The conduit is a mysterious item that provides a unique buff for the player.
When surrounded by 16 or more prismarine-typed blocks (sea lanterns, prismarine, or prismarine bricks) it gives off a new status effect called "Conduit Power" to players in a 96 block radius of the conduit. This effect gives players infinite breathing, haste (increased mining speed), and clearer vision underwater. The conduit will also do damage to nearby hostile mobs such as the drowned.
When damaging mobs, (The conduit has to be fully powered to do so.), mobs take damage one at a time and only take damage if in an 8 block radius of the conduit.
To fully power a conduit, you have to make sure the structure the conduit is in is a 5 block by 5 block cube with a 3x3 water interior and a 2x2 empty cube in each corner.
Icebergs
The icebergs spawn in frozen oceans.
Ocean Ruins
This was revealed on the Minecraft Instagram. They have chests which can contain loot such as prismarine crystals, enchanted fishing rods, iron, gold, treasure maps, cooked fish, and even diamonds.
"Cold underwater ruins generate in normal, cold, and frozen ocean biomes, as well as their deep variants. They are composed of stone materials. Warm underwater ruins generate in warm, lukewarm, and deep lukewarm ocean biomes, and are composed of sandstone and stone materials. Although most underwater ruins generate underwater, they will sometimes generate on land." - The Official Minecraft Wiki
Markers on Maps
You can now right-click a banner with a map to mark a spot on said map as seen in the picture above. The color of the marker is dependent on the base color of the banner.
Blue Ice
Blue ice is similar to packed ice, but takes much longer to mine and is even more slippery. Blue ice can be crafted with 9 packed ice in the crafting table like so:
Block ID Change
Yes, this will break a lot of old builds and contraptions. Instead of having "log 2," you now have "oak_log," "spruce_log", "birch_log," etc.
Mushroom Blocks
You can once again obtain mushroom blocks in survival mode by mining the giant mushrooms with a silk touch tool.
Bark Blocks!
Though there is no crafting recipe yet, "bark" blocks have been added to the creative menu. They are essentially logs but with the side texture also on the top and bottom. They can be crafted by placing logs in a 2 x 2 square. It outputs 3 bark blocks.
Wood-Specific Blocks
There are now trapdoors, buttons, and pressure plates that correspond to different wood types (e.g. there are now spruce buttons instead of just oak ones).
Faceless Pumpkins!
Pumpkins that naturally spawn or grow now do not have a face. You have to make it into a "carved pumpkin." To make a carved pumpkin, you right-click a normal (faceless) pumpkin with shears, and it will turn into a carved pumpkin and spit out 4 seeds.
Better Placing
Pumpkins, fence gates, and jack-o-lanterns no longer have to be placed on top of a block; they can be placed on the side of a block now. Additionally, you can now place chests of the same type next to each other. You can even have two of the same type of single chest next to each other without making a double chest. To do this, you simply crouch while placing the chest.
Seamless Slabs
Again, there are now double slab blocks with the texture of the top on all sides in the creative menu. Hopefully there will be a crafting recipe.
New Horse Model
Horses have been updated to have a more simplistic model.
Bed Change
There can no longer be beds that don't have blocks below them. They will break if you mine the blocks beneath them.
Hitbox Changes
Anvils and hoppers now have hitboxes that are the shape of the actual block, meaning you can click through it onto another block.
Packed Ice Recipe
Packed ice can now be crafted with 9 normal ice.
Command Changes
There are a lot of command changes, including the removal and changing of almost all commands. There are a lot of changes to commands, so I can't really put them all in this post.

More Information To Come!
This is just the tip of the iceberg (pun intended). For example, we still don't know how to get the trident yet. The lead developer (Jens/jeb_) has also stated that there is much more that hasn't been revealed yet.
Textures And Other Things Are Subject to Change
For example, they might change the texture of the trident or dolphin. That's why they hired the new texture artist. This would be just like when they changed the llama textures from the ones shown at Minecon 2016 to what we have now.
When Is The Update Coming?
Jeb said that the update will be released around the same time (possibly even on the same day) for both the Java Edtion and the Bedrock Edition. Also, it has been said that it will be released in Spring of 2018.

Wow. Wow! This is actually happening! I honestly didn't think we'd ever get a dedicated ocean/water update like this! It only took them more than half a decade to put fish mobs in-game. About time.
Only thing I'm iffy on is the new water physics. That's gonna break more maps and contraptions. Not a fan of it. Glad go see Dinnerbone's trident finally made it in though! Maybe we'll find them in shipwrecks?

I know this probably won't happen, but I'm really hoping we will get either bigger boats or the ability to sail player-made ships. That would especially make sense since the ocean is getting a huge update.
I'm blown away by the amount of things being added. Kinda wish they saved the voting for the end, as I imagine A would have won by a landslide. At any rate, just look at all of the stuff! You can even see coral slabs! Brilliant.

All of this new stuff for the oceans will FINALLY make them not a giant blue waste of space.
I'm actually not looking forward to the change to water physics though. If water flows through signs too, it will ruin some water elevator designs among other things.

I think it's possible they might just add A regardless, considering the theme and possible backlash/requests for it. It'd definitely fit with the update.

I wouldn't be so sure, unfortunately. Doing so would set a pretty bad precedent for Mojang.
How do you think the trident will be obtained? Personally, I think it might be a drop from the Elder Guardian, because it looks sort of like it's made of prismarine.
The trident is definitely a step in the right direction. Finally we get a new weapon since the introduction of potions from 1.1. Let's hope that the updates after the update aquatic are just as big. Perhaps 1.13's changes are making easier for new content to be added meaning that larger updates will be a thing.
The physics change is going to really grind my gears. It kind of helps remove that level of ingenuity that could be used. Breaking maps, water elevators, dams, and water-eccentric builds is something I cannot and will not defend. It feels like Mojang has a checklist to change something like this every large update, and it drives me batty.
As far as the shipwrecks, it makes me wonder if we'll find a variant of a mob, or a not yet revealed mob spawning there.
I haven't played MC in a while, but at long last I'll have my years-long dream of having a vanilla aquarium with fish come true.

Hopefully they'll add some new block or tool that water does not pass through to allow for water elevators and such. I can't imagine they wouldn't, considering those types of contraptions have been around since Alpha. Who knows, maybe the new physics won't even apply to signs and trapdoors.

I'm almost certain it'll apply to signs and trapdoors, those are two blocks that annoy people the most with how water works currently.
But besides the exclusion of Mob A (and the rest grumble grumble), this update looks awesome! Finally, so many things people have asked for!

These are mostly all mod things put into minecraft. [Fish and other water items were an idea they had for a long time so that's not new... but cool]
Water physics and items floating are probably a mod idea, but now are going to be a feature later. (Maybe in next fall or so..) No bets though!

Praise be to Spode.
Figured it was time for a change.
I'd hope it would be a drop from an Elder, yeah. It'd give a good reason to fight him, other than just getting the ability to mine prismarine.
Perhaps they are found in the sunken ships, hm?
The quickest way to my heart is with a smile.
Oh, and a white-oak stake.
Hopefully they'll add some new block or tool that water does not pass through to allow for water elevators and such. I can't imagine they wouldn't, considering those types of contraptions have been around since Alpha. Who knows, maybe the new physics won't even apply to signs and trapdoors.
Check out my suggestions! Here is one of them:
Hmmm.. Like a giant, Kraken-like mob perhaps? Ooooh, wait.
The quickest way to my heart is with a smile.
Oh, and a white-oak stake.
I'd like to sea some sort of ghost pirates haunting them. I even have a name for them: Sea Specters!

I'm almost certain it'll apply to signs and trapdoors, those are two blocks that annoy people the most with how water works currently.
But besides the exclusion of Mob A (and the rest grumble grumble), this update looks awesome! Finally, so many things people have asked for!
Loving how they planned a gigantic (and quite cool for once) update, yet they can't write the name of the update correctly.
Why not name it Aquatic Update instead of Update Aquatic?
