I really like it. Oceans were pretty barren before, its nice to see some more life. But I really feel like this is straying toward the "modded" side. It doesn't feel like vanilla anymore. I feel like these things are reserved for mods.
I agree that the update seems interesting and I will give it a try, but I would rather that these sorts of things would be optional. I'd prefer if the game had optimizations and major bugfixes first, and then continued to add on to the vanilla style, and then maybe modding became more mainstream and common in multiplayer.
I honestly see fun in both the old way of the game and these new updates- I have taken a bit of time to try and adapt to 1.9-1.12 and look at it how we all looked at previous updates to the game. But I wish that the old values of the game were still more popularly present. The mystery and danger is slightly removed with the new sounds, colorful biomes, less naturally colored wool, etc. and is being replaced with a more cheerful, less ominous vibe. The way exploration is being done alongside new items and maps gotten from adventuring is also shifting the focus away from sandbox.
Arguably what made the game so popular was that it was open ended; there was no instruction book for you to follow, and you (the player) were the one that made it interesting. It's now more that you find the fun through a set adventure, guiding you along; and people are now playing it that way. Instead of players being the source of their own strength or the cool stuff that happens, they are getting many powerful items by being the first to the end, the nether, the woodland mansions, versus building a massive castle in your world. Yes there was already those sorts of things in the game, with cool structures for you to explore, or the wither to fight- but in a balanced amount, that both encouraged adventuring and creating equally (and adventuring more for the fun, rather than exclusive powerful items gotten from it).
Wow. I actually like your complaint. Instead of just calling the game the worst for what it's doing, you explain what it is you have a problem with.
I do like the stuff in the Update Aquatic though. The oceans have been sinfully bland since I started playing back in 1.6 (and had an interest before then due to several let's plays). Most biomes have several mobs and many have a structure. The oceans just had squids and after 1.8 monuments (which were pretty neat). This update adds dolphins, actual fish, turtles, shipwrecks, ocean plants, caves and ravines, tridents, magma and bubbles to the ocean while splitting it up into multiple oceans rather than just the one. The other stuff is just fluff in my book. Except phantoms. Those seem annoying to me the more I think about it.

To be honest, the 'modded argument' kind of annoys me. What is the difference between content that feels vanilla, and content that feels modded. It seems like the majority of new content that mojang adds to the game these days is labelled as modded. From my perspective, the only way that the game will stop getting 'modded content' is if they stop the updates all together.
Anyway, while I don't believe the recent past content we've been getting felt modded, I do think that it was rather lacklustre. The updates didn't really add much to the game that was truly worth getting excited about.
However, with the update aquatic, mojang have finally done what a lot of people have been wanting them to do for quite a while. Find a part of the game that needs significant improvement, and focusing on that for the update. I feel like people are already far more excited for the update aquatic then they have been in previous updates, things that have been requested for many years are finally being addressed (namely the fish models and to some extent a new weapon). While I would agree that this should have been done long ago, I'm not going to complain to much about that because at least this stuff is now happening. Rather too late then not at all right?
Turtles are a nice addition, though i do feel that the "potion of the turtle master" is a bit OP. 100% damage resistance in exchange for 90% speed reduction? that seems a bit ridicules,
You just described my suggestion for Bedrock Armor.
Overall I like the update. I was unsure about the texture change but it looks really nice. I don't know about soul sand underwater, always assumed it was native to the Nether. The ocean content is great, has been a long time since such a good update. Though I'm disappointed that we haven't gotten a clownfish mob- how am I supposed to update my avatar?
The underwater ruins are neat little additions. I just thought they'd spawn in more village-like formations (unless I just got unlucky). They'd fit well in the old game. A little strange that there's magma blocks around them, though. Buildings don't exactly turn into volcanic vents. Makes it easier to spot them I suppose.
For more minor things, I'm surprised the salmon don't change when they're in different biomes. The swimming animation looks pretty cool.
Thus far, with more stuff yet to come, it really looks like this is going to be a solid update to the oceans.

I found a pretty good one yesterday it had 6 buildings and one somehow generated on land!
I haven't noticed any clownfish in the 1.13 snapshots as of 18w09a, I haven't seen them nor have I been able to fish them out of the oceans. Also it seems that its icon hasn't been updated similar to the other fish... I'd figure clownfish would be a sure bet when coral starts to appear in the oceans. Mojang needs to include clownfish that swim around in the coral in the future snapshots when coral is naturally generated, that'll really help to bring the original inclusion of clownfish full-circle.
Looks like Mojang went hog-wild with the tropical fish. 3072 variants?! That's... quite a lot. No doubt one of them looks exactly like a clownfish, but good luck finding one.
Likewise the lack of block ID limits gives us five kinds of *dead* coral. Almost too much detail, but I won't complain!
I *love* the idea of adding markers to maps using banners!
Still no sign of underwater shipwrecks, are the ruins replacing them? No dolphins, either. And still no way to get a trident in Survival. (I was expecting the treasure maps to lead to a trident, but apparently not.) I wouldn't mind seeing treasure maps show up in other places too, like desert temples.
Is something wrong with the forum? I'm seeing a lot of posts from 2016 and earlier on the front page, and only a very few that are more recent.
I'll admit I thought that 3072 versions of the tropical fish was a little extreme. But I don't know what criteria people are using to say something should be a mod rather than vanilla.
They are using their own opinion on the matter. In my opinion, a developer is in charge of what is and isn't 'for mods only'. Although 3072 is definitely extreme.

Where are you guys getting this 3072 versions of tropical fish thing from?
Are there THAT many color possibilities? Because I'm only seeing a possibility of 14 from the textures so far.. *mildly confused*
Edit: Even if I add all variants with all color possibilities, I'm still only coming to 2730 So I'm still confused about the 3072 and where it's coming from. o.o
I don't like the new clownfish texture. I was fine with block updates, but all the item textures are too faded for my liking. Maybe its just nostalgia, but the old textures seem so much nicer. I will probably download a resource pack to return to the old textures, at least for some of them.
AH- Somehow I was missing a color option while trying to calculate it.
I have to admit, having the tropical fish based on coloration like sheep wool gives a LOT of options without having to worry about so many textures. It may seem like overkill options for fish, but from a coding and customization standpoint it's brilliant.

Figured it was time for a change.
Soul sand IS and always will be native to the nether, Soul sand being under the ocean won't/is never going to be a natural thing that generates...

I like the new texture of the coral. I feel that it is more alive.
i actually broke down crying when i saw the new horse
I THOUGHT UPDATES WERE SUPPOSE TO MAKE THINGS BETTER
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Ok now that they added buried treasure and the way the coral looks AND the tropical fish seems a bit more on the "should be in a mod instead" category
People have said the same thing when pistons were added, not to mention horses, The End, polar bears, etc...
The quickest way to my heart is with a smile.
Oh, and a white-oak stake.

From what the wiki says the fish come in 2 shapes, 16 colors, 6 patterns, and 16 colors for the pattern, making a total of 3072.
Would be helpful if I left the link.
Well so much for trying to collect each fish for my aquarium...
Check out my suggestions! Here is one of them:
