Basically the title. You can vote in the polls, and express your beliefs in the comments to much more detail. My personal opinion is that I don't like it, because PC is the original, and it should stay that way. It would be better if the PE, Console, and Win 10 Editions were rebranded to the "Better Together Edition." However, it's Mojang's decision, and we have to accept that.
I also should mention that PC is not dead/dying. The developers for Bedrock Edition and PC are different, so PC is not dying, it just won't be in the spotlight as much anymore.

First, This is about Money (that's not necessarily a bad thing) ; let me explain.
Every version of Minecraft that is not the Java Edition is written in C+. The language that Microsoft uses for nearly everything.
Java's original reason for existing is that it was cross platform compatible. Microsoft has proved that C+ is equally cross platform compatible, especially now that they have worked so hard to unify the code base so the same version is running everywhere... except... on the PC. But wait they have the Windows 10 version too. Why do you think that is?
They have announced that an upcoming version of the C edition will have basicly a built in shader (moving water, reflections, shadows, wind). Microsoft Studios has enormous experience with 3D rendering engines. When you consider that then 1.12.x Java edition STILL has lighting bugs after all these years, you have to see where this is headed.
The Xbox version has always lagged more than a year behind the PC version, Now with unified C+ source code in hand that is no longer true and features have begun to show up there first.
I think the guys at Mojang would be justified in being a little worried except for the Java player base is so huge. However, mod development by third parties developers have fallen off dramatically since 1.8. Even though it's taking very little time for Servers like Spigot and Sponge to issued new versions now, many of our favorite plugins have been abandoned by the authors. People just won't work for free forever. The Community is still great but it's not what it was. I promise, Microsoft sees this trend too.
The branding of the PC version as the Java Edition, is to distinguish it from the Windows 10 C+ Edition.(Soon to be rebranded too) It's the one that lets you play on a PC with your XBox and Playstation friends. Microsoft is providing downloadable content (like every other game in the world) some free, some for a modest charge. If you can make a texture pack and charge 1$ to a Million users, that's gravy man like 98% profit. It's been hard for the Java Edition to monetize the game in this way.
Like I said, this is about Money. MS has to make back that 2 billion dollars somehow and converting Java Edition players to Win 10 players seems like a logical way to do that. Some day soon, the Java edition will be playing catch up to a really good C+ version with built in voice channels, better rendering engine and graphics, fewer bugs and an array of cheap add on content.

This is just another step to make Java edition less focused and the devs supported more on the inferior version to get that sweet marketplace money.
Should've named it Minecraft: superior and free from microsoft microtransaction edition.
There is already an active thread discussing the Minecraft edition name changes that Mojang made:

Please use that thread for this discussion.
