As for the crafting guide... Imagine if you will a server, with PvP minigames, which has this available... An old pro who crafts things the right way is killed by some noob who doesn't know more than 5 recipes but speed-crafts all his armour and weapons with a handful of clicks. Yeah... No thank you. IF it were to only show the recipe instead of put the materials in for you, I personally wouldn't use it but I'd have nothing big against it.
You can disable the auto crafting for pvp/minigames.

When you're going to craft a cake and you forget an ingredient. "He needs some milk!"
Is there a way to disable all the text that pops up when you unlock recipes? It's kind of annoying.
As for the rest of what's in these two snapshots so far... nothing is really grabbing me. As a solo survival player I'd just like them to focus on finishing some things, like adding in the missing slabs and stairs for existing building blocks, before moving onto new things.

I am not really liking the new crafting helper, it's probably gonna be optional but I somehow like using either NEI or the Wiki.
Also I really don't care for the new advancement things.
I really like the Parrots even though their useless.
All I am really hoping for is that they expand upon some features like the ocean monuments and stuff like that but maybe it's not going to be one of those updates.
The new features are great - until the crafting thing came out! For me, it just kill a lot of fun to crafting. What's the point of dragging and dropping when all you need to do is to click a button? The old way of crafting was one of those thing that made Minecraft unique, and I will sure to miss it! I understand that it will help the new players to have a better idea of what to do before they have to check a thousand pages of wiki, and old players that just can't remember what's the recipe. And yes, the old crafting grid is still there, you can still drag and drop, blah blah blah. But seriously, who will appreciate the old way of crafting with this new update?
The other features are again, brilliant! I know most people didn't like the combat change in 1.9, but I thought it was a great change. And now, here I am, opposing an update that most people like. Maybe something is wrong with the way I think. Hm...
You! Just don't use this new feature. You can even add a resouce pack that allows you to not see this button at all =)
You can't use a "don't like it don't use it" argument when it comes to addition to video games (it does not take much to realize that with this logic absolutely anything could be justified). This is a well documented misconception, look it up on Google if you're interested. Always consider that people, as a whole, always use the path of least resistance and in that case it's often the new recipe book.
The risk of seeing the old crafting way not being used anymore is very real. I don't know whether that'd good or bad though.
Was the goal of the old system to discover recipes ? If that's the case most of us looked on the Internet to find them, so that was not really working anyway.
For mass crafting the new feature is not that proficient. Currently you can craft only one item at the time with the recipe book. So if you want to craft a stack of arrows at once, you still have it to do the normal way.
Thereby, items like the dispenser are quite annoying to craft the normal way, because bows are not stackable. Thus for those items, the recipe book makes crafting indeed a lot less frustrating if you want to craft a bunch of them.
I can't check right now but can't you just maj click the item icon to produce as much as you can with the inventory ? I thought this was possible.
I've been playing Minecraft for years and I'm sure I'm not the only one who occasionally forgets crafting recipes. This new auto-crafting feature makes it far more convenient as you don't have to look everything up and it also makes the game much more friendly to newer players.
I don't feel that it takes away from the sense of discovery that the game creates, since you're still discovering things as you progress as you don't unlock all the recipes right from the start.
Putting the nostalgia factor of looking recipes up on the Minecraft Wiki aside, not everyone enjoys looking up recipes online, so perhaps this is better in the long run.
As for the rest of the update, I'm glad that they added parrots to the game. I've always felt that the game needed to look more lively. Maybe this will pave the way for to other birds to be introduced to the game in the future.

Yes you do, that's what the fuss it's about. I also thought it would just remember the recipes in the book once you find/craft it . To me that would have solved the always-look-on-the-web problem in a better (though still not perfect) way. That's not what we have here.
At the moment it automatically adds them once you get the materials so you do not need to progress by finding the shapes. That's why the question whether recipe shapes are still relevant or not is actually a good one.

No, you dont... you literally start a new world with 0 recipies unlocked. Sure, collecting a material gives you some of it's recipies, but it's still a snapshot and things are subject to change. Also, shape crafting still has relevance, say, if you want to craft a large amount of shovels, it'd be faster to use shape as the book only does one at a time. Or for instance, if you just memorized a recipe, instead of having to search for it in the book, you'd use shape crafting to make it.
I don't get why figuring out shapes is such an issue. That doesn't break a sense of exploration, not once in my hundreds of hours did I randomly move around blocks and had a feeling of "discovery" when I somehow magically figured out a recipe. Everyone already went on the internet to figure out the recipes, having the shapes "spoiled" for them, this just removes the middle man of having to open a browser, and it's spoil free!
You don't have to worry about figuring out how to unlock a beacon or shulker boxes too early because they require end-game crafting materials. Plus there's room for improvement since this is an unfinished feature. Currently chests are unlocked by having 8 (Maybe 9?) items in your inventory rather than picking up wood. This means there's potential for improvement.
I personally don't dislike them (am I the only one?). I see them as basically a new achievements system. I'm struggling to grasp why people seem to hate them.
I mean, yeah, they're really cool and stuff, but I think the main reason why people are upset is because they removed the original achievement tree. I personally wanted them to keep it as the default advancement tab.

Because people won't be playing the game how I want them to play it.

It's all a bit "meh" for me personally so far.
The unlock text spam was fixed in 17w13b.

I like and don't like the new update.
I like:
+parrots
+Blocks
I don't like:
-removal of achievements (R.I.P.)
-Crafting book
-new textures to wool, sheep, and banners

Many people said Parrot are a bad add-on but in my own opinion, it would make the world feel more "alive".
I think they should add the different type of bird for each biome and make some bird tameable and some untamable.

Hi
People are sad about the removal of achievements. I guess I was the only person who never cared about or checked mine...
THAT"S WHAT I THINK TOO!
