"Terracotta: a hard, fired clay, brownish-red in color when unglazed, that is used
for architectural ornaments and facings, structural units, pottery, and
as a material for sculpture."
In real life, terracotta isn't really very colorful even when glazed, but in Minecraft it truly is. Some people complain about how it
looks, but for me it looks cool. May be useful in builds.
(It seems quoting someone's reply didn't work for some reason.)
While I like this update, (Although I'm still unsure about terracotta) Is it possible this is the last major update we might see on PC? Jens has stated before that the Java edition is now going to be turned into an 'experimental' version, that's driven by the community. A lot of people are thinking this is going to be it for the PC edition with the Windows 10, Android and iOS editions taking the forefront.
To be honest, I don't quite know for sure if I'd like that. Although I understand that eventually all good things must come to an end. The bright side though is that we may start seeing the really expansive mods finally getting updated to newer versions of minecraft instead of being stagnant and sticking to 1.6.8 and 1.7.10.
the developers have been saving a couple of bigger new features for 1.14, which is gonna be the next BIG update that's gonna take over a year to develop.
I've seen squat with regards to 1.14. Have any tweets or reddit posts you can link with any info?
I've read a tweet, and unfortunately I know nothing about Twitter so I never managaed to figure out how to search for or link to tweets.
But it was a tweet made around the development of either 1.10 or 1.11, with a dev saying they had a couple smaller updates planned (1.12 and 1.13) and that 1.14 was gona be the next big update that would take a long time to develop.
Ah, alright. Makes sense considering 1.13 is primarily focused in re-writing Minecraft's internal code, which I hear is nightmare inducing.
When you click on a tweet and it brings itself up, click on the arrow to the right of the "Follow" button towards the upper-right, and there should be an option that said "copy link to tweet." Just for future records.

Because this basically says that anyone complaining about small updates should just not play past 1.9 until 1.14 to get the full "large update" experience.
All that means is that the experience of the jump from 1.9 to 1.14 will feel like a big update happened but the reality is they are 5 small updates. The days of big updates are over.
1.12 is rather dull. Just like 1.11 was. All of these updates are so spread apart and so small that the enjoyment is not even worth the wait. We haven't had a big update in many months now and each of the last few updates have taken at least half a year. Mojang's team continues to grow, yet they seem to be getting slower and slower in producing new content. It's getting frustrating as someone who has hosted a survival server since survival began in alpha, I feel kicked to the curb ever since Notch left. Why is Mojang trying to kill survival?

Considering 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, and 1.11 were based off of enhancing mainly the survival experience (Or at least contained major changes related to survival), I really doubt they're trying to kill it off.

They've produced content for creative more than survival. Nothing but the combat has changed in survival. New blocks don't count towards survival in my opinion. We need new adventures. More mobs, more weapons, more enchants/potions. Stuff that can change up the norm.

For mobs: Polar bears, parrots, husks, strays, Guardians, illagers (3 types, I believe?)
For adventures: Woodland mansions, Ocean monuments, End cities
For weapons: Axes (Sort of), lingering potions, tipped arrows.
For enchants: Sweeping edge, Mending, Depth Strider, Frost walker
For potions: eh, you got me there. Levitation and that Spectral effect, I guess.
This is also skipping stuff not in your exact categories.
I'd say that's plentiful. Creative users got a bunch of blocks, but that can't really count since blocks are both survival and creative content.
I love 1.12, and I can't understand why it took this long to add something like JEI. If you're playing Minecraft 100% blind and refuse to look at any video or wiki, then you will be stuck permanently unless you can magically figure out how to craft a crafting table. It's a shame that it was added so late into Minecraft's development, because now everyone and their mother has heard of and at least watched some Minecraft.

I can agree with that. Considering that the amount of new arrivals to MC is down from years past now that just about everyone knows about it, it does seem a bit late. It can still help though with brand-new recipes, and/or if you have a derpy moment and forget something though.

Mobs, not enough hostile mobs and illagers are rare. Husks and strays are just dupes of zombies and skeletons. Lame in my opinion. It took months to make two copies of a mob that already existed.
as for the mansions, also rare, but also completely useless. Nothing good in them. End cities are probably the best, but they're also OP. They give out tons of diamond gear. They're not very creative though.
Axes yes, that was a good start. Same with tipped arrows, but due to the combat update tipped arrows have very little effect. Prot 4 absorbs all of the damage Of the tipped arrows.. lingering potions are awesome.
enchants have been good
All in all, they still haven't produced enough. They've added bosses. We need more bosses. Why arent giants an actual mob? They existed but were never fully implemented.

Giants were buggy messes that couldn't even properly traverse the ground due to their size. They also fall into your complaint as "Just reskins of zombies", only with a bigger size. (They literally even used the same textures and AI).
I can see you want new content, but you're forgetting it's quality over quantity. Husks and stray were results of people's constant "Need" of new mobs, and look how they turned out. Adding more stuff randomly doesn't always just make the game better, there has to be more thought put behind it than "You know pizza rifles sound pretty funny.... Why doesn't Minecraft have those?"
That's probably why updates like 1.12 took so long. Sure it's "Just a bunch of blocks", but there actually was a whole bunch of thought put into 1.12. Terracotta took forever to design to make it look nice when rotated around, the advancements and soon-to-be new crafting system directly enhances the player's experience no matter what side of the spectrum they're on. Rewriting all of that took tons of thought.
Besides, I don't really think your issue with Minecraft is that there's not enough stuff to do. For everything new they've done, you've found complaints for them right away. There's a point in time where it's not the game that's uninteresting, it's you who's lost interest. Any game will always inevitably get boring, and no major updates are going to permanently fix that unless the game got overhauled into essentially a whole new entire game, unrecognizable from the original.

QFT.
So many people hating on the changes. I'll admit there are a few changes that I think are lame, and I have a list of what "should" have been added by now, but I like most of what has been done. The new combat system took a bit of getting used to, but spam-clicking is not a skill, and the new system adds some challenge to battles.
The haters are gonna hate, no matter what Mojang does.
Just a reminder people, this thread is for voicing your opinions about the changes in Minecraft 1.12, not for general opinions about Mojang development, prior Minecraft versions, or anything else.
Both my wife and myself just updated *I think* to the new version.
Its rather confusing.. we googled, and found the instructions to install the xbox inside app.
The instructions then say to find the minecraft beta, and then play!
Except Minecraft isn't updated.
More googling, and we read you have to then go back to the store, and update. It wasn't clear if that was inside the minecraft store, or the windows store.
It wasn't anywhere in the minecraft store, so back we go to the windows store... Bazinga! We see theres an update. It downloads, and says its installed.
But theres a new update button there. So we both select is, and it says working......
...
....
its been 15 minutes now on both systems, and its still working.
I suspect its done and the windows store is hanging but needless to say, this isn't as streamlined as it could have been, instruction wise.
EDIT: We just closed the windows store and reopened it, and the game was updated fine. No idea why the windows store locked up on both systems.
Framerate on the game seems great, and the option to craft without the recipe book is a godsend. I do like the suggestion some people have in the feedback to not open the recipe book, but I don;t see how people would know what materials they need to make something without it.
Lighting seems improved, and if I'm not mistaken thunderstorms sounds are improved as well. I don;t recall seeing lightening flashes before.... but that could be just my imagination.
The only issue we ran into was it crashed hard with a white screen on my wife's system.
We played for a few hours, and never saw one parrot though. 8(
This thread is about the recent update to Minecraft Java Edition, to version 1.12. By the way you are talking about Windows Store and Minecraft Store, I think you are using the Minecraft Windows 10 Edition (which, just to confuse things, is now called "Minecraft", along with the Pocket and Console Editions )
This new update is great, I just don't like the new recipe book feature, because it's a bit nooby. And I don't like the way mojang changed the achievements to advancements, as I prefer a linear achievement set, or at least being able to see some of the achievements before completing any, so that I know what to work towards. It's a great update otherwise.
