32-bit may be slower than 64-bit but it still help old program to run on newer version.
Not to mention this is NOT a Microsoft product - they had absolutely no part in it's development, that was ALL Mojang. And Mojang's team of coders seem to all be amateurs now, considering their updates since Notch left.
I tried it again on a Windows 10 machine. Again, even after leaving the program running for 10 minutes, it still used barely any resources.
On this computer, it still never used more than 70MB of memory between all of it's 3 instances (two background processes, one foreground app) and more than 0.3% (scale of 1-100%) of the CPU. This is definitely more than the resources used on macOS, but that's still barely any consumption.
As an experiment, I ran the old java launcher, and interestingly it used far more resources than the new one, peaking at 5% of the CPU and 300MB of RAM.
Maybe it's something your computer is doing simultaneously that's causing the launcher to allocate 500+MB of RAM?
Could you make a couple screenshots like the ones Ravbug made? Maybe that gives someone an idea why you are experiencing this.
OK guys, here is a screenshot of Task Manager and the Minecraft Launcher side-by-side. Additional info is in the image provided. As it was scrolling through the news, that is when the RAM started to build up drastically.
Notch left after Minecraft went into version 1.0.
are you saying Notch was a better coder, with that buggy and unstable mess of code that Minecraft was in Alpha and Beta?
Notch left around the time 1.8 came out - you know, the update that multiplied minecraft's RAM usage/sec by about 10.
and he hasn't touched the game since 1.0. Every update in between 1.0 and 1.8 was made by the same dev team that's developing the game right now.
yet they still haven't bothered to get rid of BlockPos - he may not have been the dev but he was still in charge. If I owned Minecraft I would have never even let 1.8 release with the BlockPos class. It's a horrible deoptimization that should have never existed. But this thread isn't about mojang, it's about the 2.0 launcher which also should not have been released.
But you didn't actually USE the launcher, did you? just left it running in the background?
I didn't expect the game running or not to make a difference, but just to make sure, I re-ran the experiment. This time I had the game running simultaneously for 5 minutes.
With logs hidden, it used a similar amount of memory and CPU as it did when the game was not running. (1st screenshot)
With logs shown, it initially used 1000MB of RAM and spawned a 4th process (log viewer), but quickly reduced back down to low usage. CPU usage was not affected by the 4th process. (2nd screenshot)
I can see why running the logs could hurt performance for low-end systems, but I could not get the RAM usage to stay elevated for longer than 5 seconds after the log window appeared. And yes, it is irritating to not automatically show the logs automatically when the game crashes. But the game saves all its crash report files to minecraft/crash-reports and all the logs to minecraft/logs, so it's not impossible to get to them, only much more inconvenient.

Oh wow. So I guess the logs are rendered in Chromium(Chrome Browser) now, which results in the high memory usage. Incredibly pathetic, the person that thought it was a good idea to do that should be immediately fired and taken back to programming school. Also note that leaving the log open for a long enough period of time(around 15-30 minutes) causes the launcher to crash.

Most windows applications are win32 (32 bits) so that they don't have to make a separate 32 bit version for older devices, and because a launcher would have little benefit to being 64 bit.
As for the new launcher, If you don't like it, download the old one from the Alternate button on https://minecraft.net/
I personally use the new one but I dont like it for multiple reasons I wont get into here.

The new minecraft launcher did Mojang made available already ?
So... due to this really bad launcher, I'm now unable to play the game I paid for. Click on the icon, and some 39mb updater pops up... runs up until it's all downloaded... and then crashes. Given I have limited bandwidth on my internet connection, I gotta say thank you mojang, I REALLY love not being able to pay for the product I purchased, AND waste my wireless data redownloading a bugged out launcher. Thanks thank you very much.
Could I ask... what exactly was the problem with the old launcher that required such a buggy and broken update? Is it "fix what isn't broken" month again?

Mojang didn't like how the old launcher was not pretty enough.
You can use another launcher called MultiMC, which has the same features as the official launcher as well with a boatload of additional features. I made the switch after the new launcher kept taking up 500MB of my RAM while open(and the fact that it crashes completely when the game log is shown for more than a few minutes).

Except, being an unofficial launcher, MinecraftForum would not provide support. This is why I suggest downloading the "linux" launcher, which is actually the universal launcher, so you are still using an official launcher without the issues from the horrible new one.

Except that's a temporary solution. Mojang could finish the horrid 2.0 update for the universal launcher at any time and force upon millions of people's throats, with no choice of declining the update.
As for MCF not providing support for MultiMC, users can ask the MultiMC community for assistance(heck, the source is available on GitHub and you can report bugs there), or go to any other Gaming support site and ask for help there.

Actually, the universal launcher DOES NOT auto-update so Mojang couldn't force a 2.0 universal launcher. Also, MCF doesn't provide support for Minecraft as a WHOLE if you aren't using an official launcher. It's part of the rules.
I've been having issues with the new launcher since it came out.
Whenever the launcher is updated and downloads (38 MB) I usually get an error code 5 popup as it can't rename the temporary launcher exe to override the existing one. To get it to work I have to delete the tmp directory and rename the existing launcher exe to something else. If that fails I grab the tmpLauncher.tmp file from the tmp directory and rename it to MinecraftLauncher.exe. Then replace the old exe file with the newly renamed one.

The new launcher won't even display crash reports, such a disapointment.
#1 reason it is inferior to the "old" launcher.
