The new launcher v2 doesn't work for me either. I can no longer play minecraft. I also would like Microsoft to add the option to opt out of automatic updates of launcher.
So I also finally got the new launcher and I think it's funny how some people complain while they obviously haven't tried the launcher themselves yet. Or, also possible, didn't bother to check it out (as in: giving it a fair chance). Because I can now state from experience that the functionality of the launcher hasn't been changed.
You can do everything which you could in the old launcher, and even more. Obviously hinting at skin control, but also better support for multiple accounts. I personally really enjoy the new "keep the launcher open" option; this allows me to start a game, switch my account and then start a new game. That's a lot better than the previous launcher where I had to start the whole thing every time from scratch.
I also enjoy the ability to assign icons to my profiles, this makes it a lot easier to pick the right version whenever I want to change. For example switching between OptiFine, ForgeLite (Forge + LiteLoader) and Vanilla. Which shows me a glass block, a lit furnace and the grass block.
Finally; the game server check is also a welcome addition. So if you want to be sure that you can logon to your favorite server then all you have to do is check your Help section before launching the game.
People now complain about the news ("ads") but I think that's a little self-centered. I mean: we don't have to pay for updates, so if Mojang can earn a little extra by using the news for small - Minecraft - advertisement then I wish 'm all the best. It would have been different if we had to pay for every update, but we don't. So I don't understand why some people seem so self-centered or appear arrogant in denying Mojang a little extra as well.
Then there's modding. I also fail to understand the problem. I can easily fire up my modded Minecraft versions just as easy as I did with the old launcher. I could imagine that some trouble might happen when you're launching Minecraft from another program, such as the Curse client, but I don't think it's fair to blame Mojang for that.
All in all I think they did a good job. The launcher is more user friendly than the previous one (for example: players don't have to mess with their profiles anymore in order to play a snapshot, that's a pro) while still providing all the features which the old one had. And more.
You're missing the point - SOME people have issues with the launcher, not ALL.
EDIT: I didnt realize that Mojang had deployed the new launcher and it isn't opt in anymore.

I think it's kind of funny how people are getting angry about something that wasn't supposed to work. When Mojang says the launcher is in Beta, they mean there are problems and you accept that when you use the launcher.

I haven't had any issues with the new launcher at all. However, "something that wasn't supposed to work," shouldn't have been forcefully pushed upon millions of users without the option to opt out. "You accept [that there will be problems] when you use the launcher." Except we don't have a choice and might not want to accept it. Beta software should never be pushed live to every user without an option.

Wait, I thought you could only download from reddit.
Same with me! i can't launch my modpack anymore, it starts loading slow and keeps going unresponsive, then till it gets 1/4th the way and just stops completely and i have to force quite the program
My laptop had this launcher pushed to it the last time I played it (my two desktops are still on an old version which seemingly won't update until I choose to hopefully). So far, everything is working fine. The profile I had saved which is for 1.9.4 still on that PC transferred, and there's no crashing or performance issues. The game even seems to load just as fast (maybe somewhat faster, even, than my much faster desktop using Forge). I'm a bit less concerned about trying it on my other two PCs now, but my laptop wasn't using Forge, just OptiFine.

There is no 'Edit profile' tab in the old launcher (1.6.76). There is the 'Profile editor' tab but I can assure you that this does not feature any options regarding to the launcher itself. Maybe you're talking about a 3rd party launcher?
Edit: I found it. It's actually in the profile itself. Thanks for mentioning this, that's useful to know. Right now I moved back to the old launcher because the new one started giving me some problems when I was using multiple accounts. So this is something I'm happy to know about

Its because testing costs $$$ and Microsoft doesn't like that. They fired the Windows 10 QA team which tested updates to make sure they don't break peoples PC's, so I'm not surprised they don't do any testing for Minecraft
Microsoft figures its more cost effective to just let the consumer be guinea pigs and test for bugs in updates. And while most people don't like it, unfortunately Microsoft is too big to care about what us customers have to say.

Microsoft has nothing to do with the production/testing of Minecraft. It's still produced and tested my Mojang.
But you are right that Microsoft doesn't care if their customers are happy or not, as long as they keep buying the products. It's simply more profitable to have more unhappy customers, rather than fewer happy customers. So until people start moving away from MS products they will put as little effort as possible into making you happy.
Since i was *cough* forcibly *cough* switched over to the new launcher, not once have I encountered an error message. Every time I open the launcher, I still expect an error message (due to habits)

i have a 32 bit computer with 3 gigs of ram. Minecraft sucks on it. Just had to throw it out there.
Neither of those are why your computer sucks; Minecraft doesn't need more than 512 MB*, even when running mods, at least my own:
(this is only a "small" ravine as far as larger ravines in my mod go)
*At least under "normal" settings, since it does need more if you use high render distances (32 chunks needs about 16 times more memory than 8 chunks, somewhat less overall since that is just for chunk data) or HD texture packs (a 512x pack requires around 2 GB just to store the textures uncompressed in memory). I don't see the use of going over 8 (or 10 since 1.7.4 due to the view distance-mob spawning bug) unless you want to get a screenshot of a wide area since when you are underground you'll never see that far (excepting the giant caves/ravines in my mods, and I think that seeing out of rendered chunks adds to the experience), in-game maps only update within a 8 chunk radius, and 1.6.4 uses a fixed chunk update radius of 7 chunk, plus 1.6.4 can't render more than 10 chunks even on Far due to a bug (Optifine lets you go up to 32 but it doesn't load more than 10 until you go over 16 due to yet another bug within itself).
32 bit, at least for Java, is also actually faster as long as you aren't emulating it on a 64 bit OS (32 bit applications run in what is basically a virtual machine), as well as uses less memory (more memory usage in general decreases performance because memory bandwidth is one of the bottlenecks in modern computers. this is also why you should not allocate however much memory you think Minecraft needs, only what it actually needs, plus a small buffer):
Generally, the benefits of being able to address larger amounts of memory come with a small performance loss in 64-bit VMs versus running the same application on a 32-bit VM. This is due to the fact that every native pointer in the system takes up 8 bytes instead of 4. The loading of this extra data has an impact on memory usage which translates to slightly slower execution depending on how many pointers get loaded during the execution of your Java program.
We have adjusted the defaults for 64-bit implementations to be 30% larger in order to make up for the increased size of Java objects due to larger native pointers. Remember that Java objects contain class and lock pointers so even if you create Java objects which contain only integers, each object takes up additional memory.
My current computer, and previous computer, are both 32 bit with 3 GB of RAM (4 GB with 3.25 GB usable for the current one), yet my current computer is much better because it had a better CPU and GPU (why 32 bit and 3 GB? My father seems to think that is all you need (both of the computers that I've had used to be theirs), and granted, I have never run anything that even maxes out 3 GB, which is really only needed if you run photo/video editing software or multiple programs).
That's weird, my launcher let's me play just fine, whether or not I have mods installed doesn't matter. Are you sure you're mods aren't just incompatible, and causing the game to crash?
it'd be hard to tell on the new launcher without the crashlog showing up after a crash. It's really stupid - in what situation WOULDN'T you want to see the crashlog after a crash?
So has anyone found an effective way to get back to the old launcher...The one that lets you edit your profile so you can choose which version of Minecraft you want to play? And all the other profile info/changes that were available?

You are VERY mistaken. Most users download the OS-dependent launcher from minecraft's official website, which automatically downloads updates.

I love it when someone makes a long, ranting, holier-than-thou post like this:
Only to crash and burn later...

Mods are not very easy to install or run compatibly with vanilla servers
So I don't use them
you sir must not have used mods in a VERY long time.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

My big problem with this new launcher is it always crashes. Each. And. Every. Time. I. Use. It. The game launches, but the launcher always crashes.
Not to mention the layout is confusing. The settings used to all be in one place and now they're all over.
I post pretty rarely nowadays. Gosh, I wish this place weren't so... empty...
So has anyone found an effective way to get back to the old launcher...The one that lets you edit your profile so you can choose which version of Minecraft you want to play? And all the other profile info/changes that were available?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
