is actually an intended feature? If that is so... I honestly find that to be one of the stupidest changes Mojang can make. So, if I want to say... have a custom named Cobblestone stack, it will cost me 64 levels to do? That is crazy.
I have been experiencing as well, and i think it's a bug (at least i hope so). Its really annoying because it takes so much xp to rename a stack, and if you try and rename more than one at a time, it wastes xp without giving you the item. I'm glad somebody reported this, because i tried to make a named stack of end crystals, but it didn't work out well.

This change also has brought about a bug on servers where it won't even let you rename stacks of any size in survival mode. Had to go to creative, name the stacks, and then take the corresponding levels from myself with commands. I just recently completed a Storage System that sorts every sortable item (with the exception of custom fireworks, firework stars, and enchanted golden apples).
That's about 472 sorting hoppers, with 21 custom named slabs in each. That's 9,912 total custom named slabs = about 155 stacks of slabs. Whereas I only had to spend 155 levels to get all the custom named stacks I needed (thankfully I have an excellent AFK xp farm), with this "intentional" change... that would equate to 9,912 levels. Making it pretty much impossible for me to have actually completed the storage system the way I wanted. You can get from level 0 to about 155 with about 2 hours of afking at the farm I have, after which you have to refresh (it's a zombie pigmen farm, and eventually they loose aggro for some reason). So, that would have equated to having to afk 64 times = 128 hours of afking just to get 155 custom named stacks. Or perhaps at say an Endermen Farm, killing mobs actively - dunno if that would give as much exp per time. That is absolutely ridiculous.

This usually happens on servers that have some sort of way for re-modeling how xp is used, such as with custom enchantments, it overrides the anvil functionality, and technically it would work however because it doesn't recognize it as a custom enchantment (custom enchs reformat xp usage and it makes everything else that you can spend xp on in vanilla mc (except using a normal enchantment table) no longer work) it fails to work like said scenario. I've never seen this in singleplayer, however. They will probably fix this soon because it is sort-of a well known issue.
That's exactly what I said, their recent "change" caused a bug on servers that is not allowing you to rename stacks at all. However, my server is entirely vanilla. Not really sure what you are talking about.

Ok @Gr3atsaga, *ahem* I've experienced this problem before, but I'm sorry as I can't help you :|
You can get from level 0 to about 155 with about 2 hours of afking at the farm I have
One thing to note - spending 1 level when you have 155 levels requires FAR more XP than if you spent it when you had just 1 level, since you need more and more XP as you level up:
According to the formula given for levels 32+ you need a total of 85,145 XP to reach level 155 - equivalent to going from level 0-1 (7 XP) 12,163 times - so you actually spent more XP than if you renamed each item with only 1 level in your XP bar! The bigger issue here is naming one item at a time, as you'd have to name 9,912 individual items instead of just 155 stacks.

Yes I know this, but that means that AFKing becomes even less so, as I would have to stop every few levels, name a few stacks, and then do it again. Meaning that, yes, it wouldn't take as long, but it would still take quite a long time - and instead of being able to step away from the game for awhile, I would have to monitor it closely - defeating the purpose of an AFK XP Farm.
Mojang have never ever worked like that. They make changes all the time that people hate and they do not change back. A recent example being nerfing mending on infinity bows.
I don't quite understand exactly WHY they did that. Guess what? I have a bone and arrow farm!

The reason they did that was because you could pretty much have infinite arrows and an infinite durability bow, which is pretty OP, and there wasn't that much hate about that feature. Useless and head-scratching features they remove.
I can't name any off the top of my head, but I seem to remember them. Whatever the case, annoying features won't stop us from playing hours of minecraft!
Nevermind, I thought of some. In the pre-1.9 update, they made armor reduce the amount it protects you by how much it's damaged, but after the backlash, it was removed.
Honestly, this kind of seems like a good idea to me. Besides, who would need to rename stacks of items in survival? I think renaming stacks of items is usually for map making, which is usually built in creative mode. Can anyone give me a reason to rename stacks of items in survival?
Can anyone confirm whether or not the "bug" in this bug report: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-111744

Video games are fun except when they're not.

Experience this when im renaming stuff to get a filter items

The funniest thing about this signature is by the time you realize it doesn't say anything important it's already too late to stop reading it.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Okay, @Gigabyte, *ahem*. Once again I say my server is vanilla, and therefore your previous post does not apply to me.

You said it was vanilla after my first reply, so you can't blame me for not assuming or something.

By the report status, It was confirmed as a BUG...
Something I do not understand...
It's probably Mojang doing something silly.
"Oh, hey look! You can rename a stack of items for the same cost as a single item! It even includes the Anvil's durability changing the same! NERF!"
Never mind the fact that all it does is cost us more Iron. We DO have Iron farms, y'know. LOL
Please read THIS before making a suggestion
And support the ability to add paintings and records!
This is a terrible change.

If there's enough anger about it, Mojang will definitely fix the bug or remove the feature.
