Sorry that you like living in the past, but we have to move forward to progress.
And keep supporting a version of Windows that's 10 years old is just ridiculous. Things change, accept it.
The thing is, if you PAY for Minecraft you should be able to use it no matter what. If it was free, that would be different. So what if someone still uses XP or Vista? Not everyone has $100 to upgrade to windows 10. (myself included)

Well, xp does not have the ability to be compatible, it is similarly a different platform, Where as vista can be plugged in to the end of eternity.
Vista came out when microsoft was looking at the linux community, to interest those in linux in a windows computer. Its a different breed a whole bunch of people put a whole bunch of time in, and I believe it should live, because as I type this, there is not a valid replacement. Windows 10 is incredibly slower to navigate, the slowness of windows 7 navigation *could be tolerated, but that is unnecessary.
If you owned a 74 nova, but there was a low grade solar panel car available. Which would you prefer to have?
Now if it was swapping out for something that I could fly, like a small 1 seater plane car.. sure. I'd trade the nova.... maaaaayyyyyybbbbbbeeeeee..........
If you traded your nova for a delorean.... then you'd be driving a delorean
.
98 is along the same basis as xp where vista wouldn't be.
Since its java version though, I have no worries, as long as my os has sp2 and java I should be alright for the next 50 years or so.
I will continue to use the old launcher and install my own version of java which I prefer anyways.
While the other launcher supports faster play, it doesn't sport the most up to date java.
What's cool is that there are different launchers.
Nope. Read the EULA. It's up to Mojang to decide how long they support the game, and on what platforms. So if Mojang wants to move away from a platform that has been outdated for 10 years, they have every right to do so.
Came for the Nico avatar, stayed for this absolutley gas discussion.
You are right, this is Mojang making the decisions. Vista and XP are extremley old operating systems, and quite frankly if your computer is running those your hardware probably isn't up to the scratch in most cases.
You never own Minecraft, they aren't scamming you or anything, you agreed you read that EULA before you bought a licence.
One of the reasons they want you to upgrade is probably because they're soon going to stop releasing security patches for Vista. Also, Vista was released 10 years ago.
The reason you can't have this launcher is because of this; you are just simply using an outdated OS. They've had 5 updates since and Vista may not reach the system requirements for this new launcher. Simply use the old launcher - there isn't anything bad about it I think. If you REALLY want the new launcher, either install Linux or get an upgrade to Windows 7/Windows 10.
Yeah, I can afford that with all the money I have. (Which is 25 cents atm.)

Seriously though, if you want to be gaming on a PC, you really wanna just save up for a gaming PC and not use a Laptop from the early 2000's. Not to mention that Vista is a failed Windows 7. Windows 7 is what Vista should of been.
There is nothing wrong with the old launcher... They won't discontinue it, they probably if anything will keep putting new versions in. The new launcher is basically a theme to be honest. Don't fret about it.
Unless newest versions won't support the old launcher.

Yeah, I'm cool with the old one. (do you have a link or something I can read about this part, "They won't discontinue it" ?)
(I'm honestly not worried about themes)
I'm looking at the electric ukII ovation guitar as to the les paul. (current situation)
Sometimes its all about the output, and how one sounds different.
So in other words, even if they discontinue it (which shown by previous launcher updates is not very likely) you still with the help of a friend can install new versions of MC.
Well, I don't plan on doing that. But, what I will admit is that java 9 is going to be super clean.
It would make more sense to me to have a launcher that accepted it. (such as compatibility to manually install your own version of java)

Current and Beta launcher both let you define which Java install you want to use. You can even force it to use Java 9 if you wanted to currently(but as Java 9 is still in development dont expect it to work yet).

Nice to know, I am a person that does not expect.
How I do respect time though.
Not everyone has $400 just laying around, you know.
That is why they invented this method called "Saving". It allows you to build up funds so you can make larger purchases at a later time. Amazing, right?

Expecting a software developer to maintain support for their producs on older systems simply because you paid for a license to use their software is just silly.

More likely the reason has nothing to do with security. Keeping p with the times is the natural order. Everyone (as a whole) is moving on from XP and Vista, and with Minecraft's development still active, it only makes sense to maintain pace with where people are moving to. Keeping support for legacy systems is just not practical. I deal with this struggle all the time at work. The company wants to keep things as they are, but the rest of the world is moving on, and compatability issues crop up all the time. Most of the people are using XP, but need to open newer docs word files, and Office 2010 is nearly impossible to find, which is the newest version that still works on XP that supports the newer file formats of Office.

Multiplayer is lonely once you understand how it actually works.
But distributing a Java runtime on the other hand is not normal behavior. Just like the way Mojang doesn't want you to distribute Minecraft so is Oracle now also pushing against the re-distribution of Java. Fun fact: the new installer ships with a Java runtime.
I wonder how long that's going to last.
If I understand the article correctly, this is about Java SE, where the big money is for Oracle (and yes, I'm not fond of them either since they bought Sun and Solaris). It is not made really clear whether Windows users get the "problematic" parts in the default installer intended for end-users/developers; if yes, it would be indeed quite a clusterf*ck but it would not be the end for the software platform itself. .NET/Mono have also been declared dead repeatedly but still have a solid chunk of developers.
I stay with that on the technical side, C# may be more quirky to maintain between platforms. One example is Mono applications on Linux and "catching up" to .NET (with which it seems to not share an obvious, common, and strictly platform-agnostic standard). The whole matter carries the stigma of a "Windows technology".

Wow, i didnt know here is a another laucher coming out..
Funny. My new launcher works fine... Just update your windows. That's ancient.
Yeah, I can afford that with all the money I have. (Which is 25 cents atm.)

There are obvious reasons as to why that is not an answer for me.
Well if all else fails, I happen to have found 2 peter max posters and some old school vintage water skii's.
I'd be willing to trade the water skii's and possibly one of the posters, but not the #1 albert.... That is not up for trade nor sell.
Time to update, buddy.
The best answer is
If you want to play previous versions, you can still use Vista likes me.
But if you want to play the latest version, upgrade your windows. Or buy a new computer.
I have serious lags with Minecraft 1.11 on my Vaio.
You have to know when a new version comes out, it will run on recent computers and the last version of windows.
Not on old computers and old windows when minecraft is introduced.
That's how the world works today.

I have no problem at all running minecraft 1.11 with 4gb of ram and a 15gb usb stick.
