Now what this is saying is that anyone with windows 7+ can use the new launcher but anything younger will have to suffice with the old launcher (acting as though java launcher is bad or something)
Considering how popular minecraft is, the Java launcher is lacking polish.
Fortunately for me, I have windows VISTA
But, why!?
and I bought MINECRAFT FOR PC.
See below.
I can't express how I actually feel about this on here except resembling the situation in sight of the words, "cow manure".
Because the makers of the most popular PC game ever want to make a better launcher. Overreact much?
I bought minecraft for PC, not windows 7. not windows 10. not windows fort knox. I bought minecraft for pc.
And you got minecraft for PC. Your point?
This is where I have to say that microsoft has totally screwed up minecraft and I may have to stop playing before the company forces me to stop playing because I don't have the newest edition of windows.
Please explain to me how a new launcher could ever "force" you to stop playing? Because you don't get the new launcher because you are running an extremely outdated operating system?Nothing has changed in your situation, you have neither lost nor gained anything.
And even assuming that for some reason Microsoft doesn't allow the Java launcher to play newer versions, they are still allowing you to play the version of the game you bought, which brings us to...
(This is illigal, because I bought something, to take it back away from me is stealing)
Ok, first it's illegal, not illigal, if you're going to call something illegal, then at least spell it correctly.
Secondly, in what way are they taking something away from you? By not giving you the new launcher, are they somehow deleting minecraft and all its files off of your computer, or no longer authorizing your account? Nope.
I did not sign a disclaimer when purchasing minecraft stating that I will willingly purchase microsoft products to be able to play minecraft.
What the... once again, even assuming microsoft doesn't give youany more updates to minecraft, in what way are they keeping you from playing?
(is that what windows is? a reoccurring fee to playing minecraft?)
Uh, no, no it isn't.
I like vista.
Good job, you're in the 1.24%
I've been using vista for about 10 years.
But why? *Looks below* Oh.
I know it, I enjoy it, and it works. If anything goes wrong, super simple to reassemble.
Windows 7 is all of that x3, no reason to not upgrade.
I'm upset at this motion... for I see its implications.
Minecraft NEVER should have sold out....
I offer you 2.5 BILLION FREAKING DOLLARS for a project that you worked on years ago and don't want to deal with; what would you say, "Nah, I'm good."!?
soon enough it will be, "You need windows 15 to play minecraft, because the past 14 versions didn't have enough security features."
Windows 10 is (for now at least) the last version of windows that will exist. But aside from that technicality, requiring people to get off their butts and upgrade from their ancient OS isn't new at all. Really, you're lucky to be supported at all right now.
like, cmon, get real here.
Pay money to upgrade my OS so it asks me more questions than it already does,
What?
and so it hides my file extensions and files from me?
The situation is "cow manure" because... oh wait, nothing is happening to you in the reasonable future, and any lack of support for your operating system will be well justified. So why again?
If you use linux someone can take root of your computer, access, remove, add, modify files. And perform actions while you are using it. (within around 5 minutes it says) (So really about 22 seconds)
Any statement from Mojang on why they redid the launcher in C++? From a programmer’s perspective it would have made much more sense for the main game, as C and C++ excel over other languages primarily when coding close to the hardware. Generally it is not "faster" or "better" than Java unless you are talking corner cases. Sorry if it has already been asked, I don’t follow the forum regularly
I’m asking because I have been Linux-only for ten years and and can generally count on same-day support for all OSes with the majority of indie titles.
Of course I understand that Mojang needs to cater to the Windows folks first by the sheer numbers, as well as the issues they have with the Java runtime and the substantial fragmentation of the Windows platform (maybe even more than the *nixes nowadays?). But this seems somewhat weird. Does it have to do with MS being rather Java unfriendly in favor of their own (alas much less portable) language runtime?
@OP: In the longer term there’s no way around upgrading to a more current (and faster) OS, be it Windows, a Linux distro or maybe even Remix OS if it has to be something super-slim. For a beginner’s distro that contains all codecs, Flash, Java etc. you could try Linux Mint. Browsing files being slower seems slightly strange to me though, as ext4 really runs circles around NTFS, especially with huge directories containing thousands of files. Maybe your PC is really too underpowered for anything current. That’s why I included the Remix OS link.

Well, atm, I'm saving money for a graphics card to upgrade my pc to at least ddr 3 so I can go over to a 64-bit OS. Right now its got a ddr2 1.5gb AMD radeon 2400 pro business in it which is very solid and reliable for my 32-bit OS, If I need more memory I can just USB stick it in or grab some ram from my hard-drive. (the max the system can handle is right above 1.4GB, handling 1gb-1.3gb like a champ.)
Its not as simple as just buying a new OS. Because I was a first time buyer of vista I have to buy not only a new graphics card but either windows 7 or 8, THEN I can upgrade to 10. (Which if I were to purchase these 3 seperately would be around 250$ and I'm not a golden goose)
The ddr3 2gb graphics card running a whopping price of 42$. Browsing files probably took longer for me because I'm so situated with the start menu that windows has. I went Linux whole time I was gone to another state and managed to play minecraft with a vga cable (about 20-25fps) and still update my mod. So, I can't really beat it with a stick. It works, and it was there when I needed it.
It just kinda chapped me at the time I wrote the first post that this would occur when if its compatible with windows 7, its compatible with vista service pack 2.
The only reason it wouldn't be is if someone (or someones) specifically designed the launcher to cut a party out. (Which it was or it would be Vista sp2 compatible because it is windows 7 compatible)
Its that Minecraft is being used as part of the illusion of "Needing" to upgrade the windows OS when this is not the case that really got to me. (most likely payed by Microsoft to do so, or put in a position of persuasion)
Either way, its no oracle stadium, I don't imagine microsoft can cut off vista any other way than to push its users with impressionism to upgrade, its not like 98 or xp. But if they don't push sales and get people to leave their old systems their new systems won't work right (I guess that's why 10 is separate, just in case). The microsoft OS upgrading game could have ended at vista. But nope... gotta buy more crap. (I haven't)
"Microsoft owning Mojang doesn't affect on how the game is being developed"
While microsoft has stated it will not impede upon the development of minecraft, This is obviously a lie or the new launcher would not have been the microsoft favored C++. Actually as a matter of fact, without microsoft I guarantee there would never have been a C++ launcher. That's why the new launcher turned out the way it did. (which I have to hand it to mohjang for that one or whoever wrote it). The *only reason for there to be a C++ launcher is to cut out certain groups of pc users in the future (with a non superior launcher(lol)). (They tried this crap a few years back too) Quite a diabolical plan that was thwarted.
-C++ results in "add-ons" -That's it! (this is why microsoft games are unmodifiable, the worst thing that could possibly happen to minecraft). Things In C++ may seem like they have a faster curve but this is because the potential of it is limited. You are looking at this. This is what you get. You can not add more, You can not take away. You have this, now modify it. In other words, microsoft gives you a box, controls whats inside the box and the box, then you make it look different (only whats inside the box). -You can't write anything new, and its a vampire on creativity.
-Java results in something similar to what forge is.
I personally find it funny that microsoft will pay me 5$ a month amazon credit for using bing, but won't pay me anything for contributing to the biggest product they own, then they release a C++ launcher... It makes no friggin' sense man. If they supported their own product by supporting its contributors this topic wouldn't of ever been made in the first place, I could afford the OS and the graphics card they demand and expect me to buy.

-When I do upgrade my OS I will be looking at other alternatives to the windows because of this.
You are being utterly ridiculous. Windows Vista is 9 years old, it's last service pack was released 7 years ago. Dropping support for old and outdated OSes is common development practice. Though getting exact statistics for OS usage is difficult, I have foundseveralsources that say that Vista only represents about 1% or less of OSes. Developing for Vista just isn't worth it anymore.
As for the C++ launcher, C++ runs on Windows, Mac and Linux(The new launcher doesn't currently run on Linux IIRC, but Mojang is working on it). No one is being left out because of some Microsoft conspiracy. The only reason you can't run the new launcher is because you're running a 9 year old OS. Dinnerbone stated that the new launcher was made because.
The current java launcher has never satisfied us; it looks bad and it really doesn't provide a good user experience. We wanted to change that, and to make a product that we can better maintain going forwards. Besides, it lets your change your skin! Source
Dinnerbone also stated:
We were able to make it much faster than the current launcher, give it new things that you can't currently do... and it looks just so much better! Source

3. Wasn't this quote about the same time they were saying add-ons added something to the game? (I guess that's why they aren't called add-ons anymore)
Your entire argument was flawed from the start. Simply by the existence of this page minecraft.net/download/alternative . They keep and make available old versions of the launcher for people with older systems (or odd configurations) that cant run the latest. The release of the new launcher wont prevent you from playing, you will be able to continue using the old launcher. Secondly, Vista is old and only behind Windows ME on the list of biggest Windows mistakes ever. Your entire argument that Vista works better than the rest is flawed.
Now for the second thing, which pertains to one of your more recent messages, and im going to start with a question. "Will keeping Vista eventually stop you from being able to play?" and the answer is Yes. Not because of anything Microsoft or Mojang will have done. Minecraft requires many things that all computers "should" have in order to run. Your Vista SP2 = 7 argument is wrong. Not everything that will work on Vista SP2 will work the same on 7, included in this is Java which happens to be an instrumental part of Minecraft. Now on to the rest of your confusion about your actual hardware. Your graphics card, has nothing to do with the architecture (32-Bit v 64-Bit) of your OS. Based on the age of the other hardware and the fact you have Vista installed, you are most likely on a 32-Bit OS because you only have a CPU capable of 32-Bit processing. Now lets say you buy that $42 newer hardware, and down the road realize you need to use a new OS because something else stopped working on Vista, guess what, that new hardware you purchased probably wont work(Based on the price you mentioned and hardware you said it would have), because anything thats $42 now, is probably already in its EOL(End of Life, which means they no longer update the drivers or other software you WILL need).
Finally onto the whole modding/addn, Java verses C++ thing. The PC/Mac/Linux version of the game runs off Java. The platform the launcher runs off has nothing what so ever to do with this. This will have little to no effect on how mods work with that version of the game. You said, for the C++ versions they now offer 'addons' which you say "do almost nothing" and while I agree with that statement currently, if you actually bothered to read up on the addons, you would know that whats currently available is an early test and proof of concept. Mojang themselves said addons are not currently very feature heavy, its still something being worked on.
TL;DR You are worried about nothing, its your own fault for using an outdated crappy OS, and you have no idea how computer hardware works.
Mojang owns Minecraft. So, yes. Microsoft kind of owns Minecraft. That being said, Microsoft owning Mojang doesn't affect on how the game is being developed, Microsoft only supervises it's assets, and quite frankly, they will get their investment back really fast, since Minecraft sells quite well on all platforms. (Yes, Microsoft do get their share from console editions sells too, even though those editions are developed by 4J)
But what comes to the subject of the topic, I haven't even bothered to try the new launcher yet, because of it being on Beta stage, and. Well, I don't want to deal with it's bugs etc.
Microsoft own Minecraft. Yes, they bought Mojang, but that DOES include everything Mojang owns. Otherwise that would be like buying a plot of land, but you don't own the house on it. That is kinda the reason you bought it in the first place...
To Microsoft, the company of Mojang is basically worthless. They wanted the Minecraft IP because that is what has the value. They bought the company as a whole because they get everything Mojang has, which includes Minecraft licensing for games, toys, cloths, backpacks, books, etc.
Microsoft has been very hands-off with Mojang because they don't want to mess with what is already a very successful and still growing brand. But if they wanted to, they could take over everything and do things themselves.

Grab some ram from your hard drive? No... no. That is not how that works in any way shape or form. No. This is beyond wrong... good god this is wrong.
Windows 10 is only $100... soo.... Wrong there on the upgrades too.
and managed to play minecraft with a vga cable (about 20-25fps)
You are trolling, right? You must be trolling. I mean, I deal with some rather inept people at work. People that think turning off the monitor and turning it back on is the same a restarting the computer, but this is some next level ineptness.

Well, in fact Microsoft prefers C# but with that, portability goes out of the window entirely. So C++ somewhat is the lesser evil. With clean, consistent code and portable libraries you have something that will compile everywhere without too much tinkering. However developers may be tempted to not support platforms that require slightly more tinkering. Java’s advantage here is that it runs in a VM and abstracts the underlying OS away.

Quoting is somewhat broken here for me. But thanks for clearing it up with the Dinnerbone statement. Apparently Mojang thought that Java’s built-in Swing UI isn’t up to the job because it doesn’t have native looks and functionality on any platform. With C++ you can just use QtGui or wxGtk and always have native widgets and dialogs. Together with all the inconveniences that come with the C language

Nice find! I didn't follow the IT news lately. So MS open sourced .NET to push a bit against the Java ecosystem. But they can't use embrace, extend and extinguish tactics anymore, since the market has moved away from traditional PCs and they need to adapt to being just a player among dozens. I see they try to position themselves in the developer and infrastructure arenas. And they seem to understand well by now that open source (and the Linux kernel) powers the low-level gear the world runs on. Servers, "smart" and multimedia devices, network hardware etc. pp.
If that means more commercial game titles for Linux, great, but on the other hand I can play Android games (including Minecraft PE) with a bluetooth gamepad on my TV box or on my second laptop with Remix OS. Android, funnily, is Linux based.
Sort of saw all that coming since ca. 2007, and I hung out a lot on Slashdot back then, so my head didn't explode from the article.
You could always use a third-party launcher if the native one doesn't work.
The only thing I'm concerned about is mod support; in particular, the sort of mods that are installed by manually adding files to the Minecraft version jar instead of using an installer (of which I'm still wondering why there isn't a "generic" installer which you add your mod files to and have it install them in the version and profile name you specify with a config file - it would make it MUCH easier for others to use my mods); even the current launcher made it much harder to manually mod the game earlier this year by redownloading the jar even if you renamed it unless you edit out some lines from the json file or use an older json from before they added them (I still have the json for 1.6.4 from before they changed it and it still works fine; the launcher luckily does not touch modified jsons - yet. I still get a bit paranoid whenever the launcher updates itself and make backups of my files before playing to be safe).
You haven't used the Forge installer since late 1.6.4, have you? Also, MultiMC--launcher, plus GUI for managing different profiles and instances, plus easy auto-install of Forge and Minecraft versions.

you aren't "referring" to the curse client launcher are you?
lol.... I had to.. aint anything wrong with up to date java. (reference to old launcher, not curse, just for clarity)
I believe PC is going to be java by the looks of things, though. Java is awesome.
Jeb posted this here on his twitter. So pocket edition/windows 10 may be C# in the future?
Maybe C# will be what they use in/on/with? their new OS, but it would be more fitting to go with java because then it would collaborate the 4. (Linux, Microsoft, Google, and Java)
We are working on a Minecraft 1.11.1 (Java). Decided to remove luck
potions... so The Unlucky Update? Also new fireworks feature.
You haven't used the Forge installer since late 1.6.4, have you? Also, MultiMC--launcher, plus GUI for managing different profiles and instances, plus easy auto-install of Forge and Minecraft versions.
I have not even used Forge at all since 1.6.2, when I used a few "3rd party" mods (any mod that I did not make myself, and even then I hacked one of them) and for my own mods I directly edited the Forge source within MCP to ensure that they were 100% compatible, probably only for a very specific version of Forge though (back when it was still allowed; I remember trying the Forge "Gradle" and could not even figure out how to decompile it). Nor do I see any reason to either since I don't mod for others and I'm not going to rewrite ~2 MB of source code for Forge (that's how big TMCWv4 is, with much of the code being my own; for example, my modded WorldGenDungeons, which I just worked on to increase dungeon variety, is triple the size of vanilla's and MapGenCavesRavines 5 times the size of the 3 vanilla classes it replaces).

I use Ubuntu, so if you have to you can use that. However, I can understand your love for Vista. It is my second favorite OS.
And in my opinion, the new launcher looks disgusting and high-tech. I really don't like it. It looks like the awful new Minecraft website. Keep that style of launcher with modpacks, please.
Sorry that you like living in the past, but we have to move forward to progress.
And keep supporting a version of Windows that's 10 years old is just ridiculous. Things change, accept it.
The thing is, if you PAY for Minecraft you should be able to use it no matter what. If it was free, that would be different. So what if someone still uses XP or Vista? Not everyone has $100 to upgrade to windows 10. (myself included)

You are being utterly ridiculous. Windows Vista is 9 years old, it's last service pack was released 7 years ago. Dropping support for old and outdated OSes is common development practice. Though getting exact statistics for OS usage is difficult, I have found several sources that say that Vista only represents about 1% or less of OSes.
Dinnerbone also stated:
Please don't PM me asking for help, I will just redirect you to the appropriate forum, where there are others who are far more skilled than me.
This is not the signature you are looking for.
Banners and such things
1. This is good for me.
2. Again, if it runs on windows 7, it runs on windows vista service pack 2 unless explicitly programmed to do otherwise.
"The current java launcher has never satisfied us; it looks bad and it
really doesn't provide a good user experience. We wanted to change that,
and to make a product that we can better maintain going forwards.
Besides, it lets your change your skin!"
..... It doesn't look bad, its slim, sleek, light, and doesn't use up a ton of resources.
-Then change the friggin' textures?
-I can change my own skin (which I will never do again, because I've done it once)
-Betters not good.
-Are you certain this actually isn't microsoft?
Oh... my sweet lord, what are you even talking about?
Grab some ram from your hard drive? No... no. That is not how that works in any way shape or form. No. This is beyond wrong... good god this is wrong.
Windows 10 is only $100... soo.... Wrong there on the upgrades too.
You are trolling, right? You must be trolling. I mean, I deal with some rather inept people at work. People that think turning off the monitor and turning it back on is the same a restarting the computer, but this is some next level ineptness.
Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.
Multiplayer is lonely once you understand how it actually works.
Alpha 1.0.4
Hahahahaa.... it has been fun. Just a little.
This..... this, got me xD

Its "definitely" a push to C#, it appears linux and microsoft along with google are joining forces, so I read in the news:
http://www.geekwire.com/2016/microsoft-joins-linux-foundation-another-step-toward-greater-openness/
Doesn't this almost explode your brain xD?
2007, and I hung out a lot on Slashdot back then, so my head didn't explode from the article.

previous launcher was good than new one.

(Linux, Microsoft, Google, and Java)
edit:
C# for pe
Java for new/updated PC.
possibly? (I can believe it)
I have not even used Forge at all since 1.6.2, when I used a few "3rd party" mods (any mod that I did not make myself, and even then I hacked one of them) and for my own mods I directly edited the Forge source within MCP to ensure that they were 100% compatible, probably only for a very specific version of Forge though (back when it was still allowed; I remember trying the Forge "Gradle" and could not even figure out how to decompile it).
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
I use Ubuntu, so if you have to you can use that. However, I can understand your love for Vista. It is my second favorite OS.
And in my opinion, the new launcher looks disgusting and high-tech. I really don't like it. It looks like the awful new Minecraft website. Keep that style of launcher with modpacks, please.
The thing is, if you PAY for Minecraft you should be able to use it no matter what. If it was free, that would be different. So what if someone still uses XP or Vista? Not everyone has $100 to upgrade to windows 10. (myself included)
