It makes you run up stairs faster than if it were to be turned off.
No, that would be incorrect. Stairs does not make you jump.
What it does faster is letting you jump up a stairway of 1x1 blocks. It is a minor boost compared to just keeping your spacebar pressed. Nothing you will notice if you have dug a 4 high tunnel so you don't bump into the ceiling when jumping up/down.
It's mostly useful in the case of having to climb a very high 1x1 block stair case into the sky/up from your mine or similar.. In most cases it's pretty useless though with the added feature of getting you killed fairly often.
If I want an autojump feature, I'd just use my horse.. they keep sprinting afterwards, are way faster and does it without getting me killed in the process..
I like that the option is there to suit other players, though I personally hate it. Its nice to have the option to give your space bar a break if you wanted to
I haven't actually played with it, but as described it sounds like a menace. I get the accessibility argument, but: Several mods offer "walkup" capabilities to automatically step up a block when walking, and that's what should have been added: A configurable option to step up one block, only when when walking or sprinting toward it. Accidentally jumping off nether paths and such is just bad.

I did some CraftTweaker scripts for Mystical Agriculture. They fill in a couple of small gaps in MA, and also let you make or duplicate not only vanilla plants, but the blocks, plants and wood from Quark and Biomes O'Plenty. Also spawn eggs for most vanilla mobs! The scripts are here on Github.
I use it when I am walking long distances, or when I am coming back up from my mine. I turn it off when I am farming. If you have auto-jump on while farming, your crops will get trampled.
Also, this is sorta off topic, but did anyone notice that if you auto-jump and press space bar at the same time in creative mode you start flying?
I do like auto jump (As I have come from pocket edition which auto jump is a widely used feature). I do feel that a change in the way to turn it on and off could be implemented. Like, for example, pushing the letter 'J' would turn auto jump on/off. This makes it more user friendly if you suddenly get into different situations.
Autojump can be useful sometime, for example, you're being chased by a player that wanted to kill you, all you need is to run away and let the aoutojump do it's work. Even though it sometimes jump when it's not necessary, it still is helpful in most things.

The best part about being alone is that you don't have to answer to anybody. You do what you want.
When I first noticed it (I've been worldbuilding on some modded maps- aka WAY unupdated) I thought it was pretty cool, but then I realized that if you stood too close to a block, it might jump, and ruin whatever you're doing, so I turned it off. It's probably going to stay that way for me.

It has it's uses, for example, crossing terrain like Plains or Desert. You're not having to mash your spacebar to get anywhere. But I see where your coming from with the Nether Fortress thing
On nether fortresses its useless but if you try to escape a wither skeleton from digging up it could waste you hunger from jumping so no point in breaking your spacebar trying to get up so auto-jump has no difference and is probably better than breaking your spacebar

I just took the Minecraft Noob test! Check out what I scored. Think you can beat me?!
I was excited for it when I read about it having been added to the game. But when it caused me to accidentally fall to my death, swim in lava, and proceed to do these things to me multiple times I turned it off and never looked back. It probably just takes getting used to, but I think I'll stick to mindlessly abusing my space bar until it falls off (again). xD
I'm used to timing my jumps in a way that doesn't stop my sprinting when running across large terrain. The auto-jump feature screws it up. It also prevents me from using one block high ledges as a wall in some cases to prevent me from falling. In other words it makes me jump and the wrong times and at times I do not wish to jump.
So no, no no. It's a stupid addition in my opinion... I mean, can't you jump by yourself like in any other game? xd

For new players I think it's good but for experienced players that are adjusted to the spacebar I think it just gets in the way
MCPE is designed with autojump too.But many people still play PE.
MY MODPACK! ~300 MODS! 1.10.2-1.12.2, 1.15.2!

I don't really care for auto jump I just leave it off
An analogy:
A mechanic uses spanners, he (or she) would use the right sized spanner for the nut being undone, using the wrong size spanner does not work as well.
Auto Jump is like a tool in MC, you use it when you need it and do not use it when you do not.
Having it on a hotkey to toggle is the best option so that you can quickly enable\disable it at will.
It's not something to love or hate, just something to use when needed.
i.e. I use it when out walking in the wilderness, I do not use it when mining or in the nether.

I suggest F3+J to toggle auto-jump.
SURPRISE!!!!
Oh great, now I have to get a new computer.
I don't like it its annoying. But on PE its very useful.
I'm not much of a fan, but I'm thankful it's toggleable.

I turned mine off and am keeping it off.
When I was like in 0.13.1 I actually realised that We had auto jump.I really like it because it sometimes gets annoying to tap on the little button.

I don't use it at all, but I don't necessarily hate it. I'm a bit upset that users who do use auto jump get to go up stairs REALLY fast though.
I have nothing against having the option there....I just choose to keep it off.
