I don't need Optifine because I have a 16GB RAM computer but I use it anyway just in case I need it for some reason. I would suggest getting Optifine if you have a computer that had like below 8GB RAM because of the FPS issue. I use to have a 4GB RAM computer then when I heard about Optifine I got it and my FPS had gone up. I definitely would recommend getting Optifine when the next update comes out.
I facepalm every time I see a post like this; RAM has NOTHING to do with how good a computer is at running Minecraft once you have around 2 GB (the amount of total system memory usage I see while playing) - try adding 32 GB of RAM to a $100 netbook (if any even support that much) and tell me if it runs Minecraft well.
Check this out:
From my testing, memory usage does affect performance slightly but the change is negligible considering I got a framerate above 60 in all occasions, and I usually play capped at 60 FPS. The game functions perfectly fine with 512MB allocated, the exact same as 4GB allocated.

While that may be true for normal minecraft, or maybe with one or two mods, if you have something like FTB Infinity installed, 4GB's of RAM is a HUGE difference from 2GB.

I was mainly referring to the fact that RAM is often treated as the sole measure of how good a computer is, with no mention of the CPU or GPU, and that once you have enough there is no benefit to having more, while you can always get a faster CPU/GPU (not that it is necessary once you consistently get a higher FPS than your monitor can refresh at, which leads to another misconception, that more FPS is always better).
Nobody but the optifine author knows when they will be finished with it, and since it is against the forum rules to ask them for a release date, I really can't see any point to allowing this thread to continue, since people are free to monitor the Optifine thread for the release status.
Yeah except harassing the Optifine creator sounds like a good way to make the update take longer or not happen at all.
It's also against the rules to do that anyways, so I'd advise against it.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

There's a difference between "unnecessary" and "wrong" or "bad." He said that it is unnecessary, not bad.
Realistic Torches - Causes torches to burn out after a configurable amount of time.
Nature's Compass - A utility item that allows you to search for any biome's location in the world.
Notes - Provides a clientside in-game notepad.
Souls - After you die, a hostile Soul that stores your inventory will spawn.
Auto Refresh - Automatically refreshes your server list and alerts you when your selected server comes online.
Pick Block Plus - A clientside mod that significantly improves the vanilla pick block function.
And a few others that we don't talk about.
