Line 'em up, and watch 'em shoot eachother down.
No seriously, too many skeletons will easily provoke a war between them all, leaving you to have some time to grab popcorn and eat until only 1-2 of them are left. Then you can easily deal with the last ones standing, as they'll usually have significantly less health.
This is the first update I have absolutely hated. How many years has this game been out? Now they want us to completely learn how to play it? The new combat is horrible.
How long have you played around with the new combat system? At first I was on edge about it, but after playing for a few hours I got the hang of it and started liking it. It's much more interesting then the old mechanic in my opinion, since it rewards strategy and thinking rather than spam clicking like it used to.
you are one of the many people who do not understand the difference between what i can do and what i want to do, i can counter skellies in all of those ways, but its tedious and i dont WANT to, they ruined the fun simple combat of minecraft. the combat: which i might add, which was NEVER THE FOCUS of this game
Well, if you don't like combat it's pretty easy to minimize it. I like building and not combat so I don't fight much. You just have to think and plan and build to stay safe. I can't see any advantages to the old spamclicking - brainless and too easy. I'm looking forward to playing 1.9, although as a modder it'll be a while.

Geographicraft (formerly Climate Control) - Control climate, ocean, and land sizes; stop chunk walls; put modded biomes into Default worlds, and more!
RTG plus - All the beautiful terrain of RTG, plus varied and beautiful trees and forests.
Better Forests Varied and beautiful trees and forests, in modern Minecraft.
I very much agree with OP here. I want a building/resource-collection game, with a little bit of conflict to spice things up. I do NOT want to have to learn tricks, provide myself with escorting dogs, and mess around with enchantments and potions just so I don't get the snot beaten out of me by each monster. Because in this game, there can be A LOT of monsters.
A shield blocks arrow damage, but only from one direction at a time, and does NOT always stop knockback. Also, I am seeming to get knocked back every single time a zombie hits me. I spend a considerable portion of my combat time just running back to the expletive enemy so I can hit it back. This is profoundly tedious and unpleasant.
Skeletons are higher level mobs. Until you have adequate gear for them to be easy and not tedious (good bow, shield, wolf), then you would benefit best from running away to safety. Or lowering the difficulty/playing creative.
found them difficult to fight against in full iron with a shield, if the update forces me to lower the difficulty then its not a well balanced update for a veteran minecraft player because i have always played on hard, so until they nerf some of the more annoying aspects of mobs im just not gana play on 1.9
Having to stop what I'm doing every 5 minutes to run to a bed and sleep the night away is no less tedious than this godawful combat, even if it wasn't for the fact that I generally do multiplayer with friends, and so can't just sleep whenever I want to.
"I say! You got some combat in my world building!"
"No! You got some world building in my combat!"
*Put both in mouth*
"BRILLIANT!"
I get it, I get it, you want the easier pastime of spam clickable foes. Well, I have good news for you!
1) Peaceful is still a thing. Get your jollies out of clicking rabbits. But on a more serious note...
2) You KNOW someone is going to make a mod to make weapons click-spammable, skellies less maneuverable, and to otherwise give you the experience you want. I bet it won't be a week.
So, in short, save the salt for your french fries and go read a book or something, it'll be better soon enough.
What I would like to see is a quickfix that, if nothing else, means that I don't get knocked back every time I get hit, because that seriously sucks. A more general nerfing of combat would suit me even better. If we all just sit quietly for a few days, they won't see how many of this are really hating this.

Just hang out in a secure base, or mine.

Unless you actually found the spamclick combat fun, there's no reason to complain. If you don't want to keep running back to bed because it's tedious, (implying that you don't want to fight anything,) play in peaceful mode.
I do have to wonder how many little kids there are who haven't heard anything about an update, don't know shields exist, and are suddenly finding their rears handed to them by skeletons.
I'm certain plenty of hardcore worlds have finally come to an end these last 24 hours.
I agree with OP. This new combat system is very frustrating and ruining the game. It's no more fun now to go and explore and the combat is plain annoying and frustrating. The shield obscures the view way too much and is not an option to carry the whole time. It's too annoying to have this ugly thing obscuring your view. Now one have to keep removing it and re-equipping it as needed. I also found that my weapon that has flame on it ( sword ) now becomes a disadvantage rather than an advantage. Previously I could kill enemies without them lighting me on fire as well. With this system now I can't kill an enemy fast enough before he melee me and sets me on fire as well. So something that is suppose to help me is working against me. PvE has changed from running around having fun to creeping around and just using a bow the whole time.

I hate the new combat system.
right the bow is the only way tod o anything now and thats no fun
Except they aren't going to change it back. If all this "hate" was coming from the majority, sure, they will. But the hate is coming from the minority, but like everything negative on the Internet, it is the loudest.
PvP and PvE is ruined especially PvP because minecraft is the only game that has the unique PvP mechanics that it has in 1.8, and I love them just the way they were.
For billionth time: It's not called PvP mechanic, it's called Combat mechanic. How hard is it to get into your thick skulls? Huh?
Never going to happen, the update is already live and kicking. And even if it wouldn't of been live and kicking, Mojang wouldn't of "recalled" the update. And newsflash: This forum is not run by Mojang, and I bet they don't even read these forums. So you just wasted your time really badly on this one.
There's no need to "got any numbers to back up his claim" Just use the search function of this forum with 1.9, PvP and Combat as keywords. You'll see how many stupid threads 1.9 haters has made with same complaints in every single one of them. And one even had link to a online petition to Mojang to revert/cancel the Combat update. And guess what. They all failed miserably.
All I hear from the OP is a lot of angst that the darkness is now dangerous and that he doesn't feel like a god who can just wack down mobs with impunity and then go on about his business. That's too bad, it's what survival is about, a challenge to survive. Others have given you feedback and options and your response is always another excuse and it boils down to 'I don't want to deal with this'. Well deal, play on peaceful, or roll on back to 1.8.9. Those are your options at this point, I for one don't feel sorry for you.

Another option is to turn spam clicking off with command blocks, which I've heard you can do. In all honesty, though, it wouldn't change much since mobs have an 0.5 second cooldown, as opposed to the 0.6 second cooldown of a sword. (You'd gain an extra 0.1 seconds.)

So what you're essentially saying is you should not have to play on easy mode for the game to be easy, and hard mode should be easy if you know how to play. I disagree. Hard mode shouldn't get easy just because you know how to play Minecraft. it should remain hard enough to deserve the title "hard mode". What do you think difficulty is about? The harder the difficulty, the harder the mobs are to deal with and the harder it is to survive. As for easy, just the opposite.
Making the game harder doesn't make a big difference on the easier settings but makes a huge difference on the harder settings, giving the game more options. Mojang is doing a good job with difficulty in their updates. Playing the game on a harder diffuclty than easy is supposed to simulate the challenges of survival. Unless you're playing easy, the game was never intended to be easy.
I've done that quite a few times. It works well.

if your method is to build things and collect resources then collect resources and build a bed
simple solution to this.
The night time is scary. that is how its supposed to be. gotta have them skillz.
see a creeper? run away. fast!

if you are lowering the difficulty because hard is to hard for you that's your own thing.
I like hard. it actually gives the bed a use and makes combat difficult, which provides a reason to collect more resources and breed more things.
Having to stop what I'm doing every 5 minutes to run to a bed and sleep the night away is no less tedious than this godawful combat, even if it wasn't for the fact that I generally do multiplayer with friends, and so can't just sleep whenever I want to.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
