Name all of newtons laws for me please. see if you know them all. what i meant was its just common physics. everyone whos over at least 13 should know that simple rule. plus, i have a flying license so im pretty sure i know how a plain works no offense, just dont hate.
Ummm... I'm a bit concerned if you have a "flying license" yet cannot spell 'plane' correctly. Yikes!
I don't think the rule that two things fall at the same velocity in a vacuum applies in this situation. You are talking about air resistance in this case but minecraft doesnt have air resistance... And there is no weight in minecraft so I don't know where this idea comes into reference.
And i I also don't know what part of newtons laws come into practice in minecraft. There isn't anything to do with either mass and acceleration relationships, equal and opposite reactions or tendencies to maintain uniform motion within the game O-O
Law 1: An object at rest or motion has the potential to stay in rest or motion.
Law 2: An object will move in the direction of net force.
Law 3: For every action there is an equal action in the opposite direction.
Now that the laws are there, we can stop arguing about them.
Law 1 Addendum: ...Unless acted on by an outside force.
Law 2: An object's force (F) is equal to its mass (m) times its acceleration (a) F = ma
Law 3: (You got that one spot on)
Elytra is 100% worth it. Why? Because infinite flight is easily possible. When I say easy, I mean 10 minutes of practice easy. Really easy.
Punch II, or Punch 2 bows + elytra. You can hit yourself with the arrows for infinite thrust and altitude gain (once you get good at it, you can gain ~60 blocks with a single arrow).
the reason noone posted this, is because it will most likely be patched upon the 1.9 release. THERES A REASON they removed the ability to go higher than you started. because they didnt want THIS (see above) so obviously, the latest 'cheat' way of doing it, isnt going to work. or if it does, it will kill you.....
so yeah, thats the reason NOONE posted this...jesus you think your the first one to think of that?
also...not infinite. Your armor breaks after an amount of time. with punch on a bow, even if you had unbreaking 5 your armor would break after about 1000 uses.
(or somewhere around there) although you may not be in the air that whole time. eventually you WILL kill yourself
also! thats not even what the op is about.....its about a VIABLE use for them. you dont get them until end game, and have to do ALOT to get to them. which basically makes their current use.....kinda dumb. i mean, at that point. you really dont 'need' to fly anywhere. travelling far after finding everything you need to completely finish out the game and its achievements....can normally be done right around you. so it makes it kind of useless.
would be better if they dropped them in the nether or something. as a way of getting around the nether, flying over the lava shooting ghasts in the face would be cool
Hitting yourself with punch bows isn't a cheat; it's been in the game for ages. Check out how old this video is:
Alright, you got me; it's not infinite. It's only infinite for as long as your elytra durability lasts. But with unbreaking 3 and a couple of elytras in your inventory (48000 blocks gliding per unbreaking 3 elytra) you can go for awhile. However, this trick is in no way limited by your armor. Taking damage does not damage the elytra, and you don't need armor to fly You can use arrows of healing with an infinity bow, and that means you won't take damage. Also, 1000 uses? That's more than enough :P. One shot can gain more than 60 blocks of altitude, so that's a total of 60000 blocks of vertical distance with whatever armor you're using on. The elytra also has a 10:1 ratio of blocks moved forward to blocks gained (10 forward for every 1 block of altitude lost). So 60000 vertical blocks transfers into 600000 blocks in horizontal distance. That seems completely practical to me. Still, you don't even need armor.
Killing myself with bowshots? Like I said, healing arrows or just some food. You won't kill yourself. In fact, if you eat (which you can eat while gliding, and it doesn't affect your speed) constantly, you will have to make an effort to kill yourself using only the bow.
So traveling for as long as the elytra's durability will last in a single flight without ever touching the ground is not viable and useless? You can get yourself up to the speed of a player sprint-flying in creative if you know what you're doing! How is that not useful? Is being able to jump off a cliff and glide over chasms, far away from whatever was chasing you useless? Is being able to ascend ~200 blocks in less than 15 seconds (without needing to build any sort of contraption) useless?
All of the things I listed above seem very practical, so practical that it is completely worthy of end-game status. Transportation, especially at this high of speed, without any pre-built infrastructure? That's awesome, incredible, and useful, no matter what point of the game you're in. Also, these are fun along with being useful. If you don't think so, please, by all means, give them to the other members of the server you play on and watch them enjoy themselves. Let's say you and a friend with an elytra are given the location of a new water monument in the middle of an ocean. You could be slowly paddling your 1.9 boat across an ocean, only to see the guy you gave your elytra to rocket past you because he took ten minutes to eat lunch before starting off, and he still gets there long before you.
I will repeat. This is not a bug. It's nowhere to be found in bug reports and it has existed within the game for over three years.

You do realize to travel anywhere with these you need to first gain height? That means making a tower or an elevator contraption. You know what those are? Pre-built infrastructure.
And seeing as this is end-game you will most likely have some other travel infrastructure already in place. Like minecart rails which will lead directly to any place you want from a minecart hub station.
Yes they are fun.
Yes there can be ways to use them
Are they practical over the other ways to accomplish the same task? No.
They require the same if not more work to do what you might already have set up in another form. They may be a more fun way to do it, but the effort to reward ratio is not very appealing.
That's like saying the command block is useless because you can't obtain it in survival.
The command block is useful for custom maps but its main use is in creative mode for testing and quick commands. I have around 20 command blocks in my test world that all run common commands that I can't be bothered to type in every time, like keeping the weather clear instead of raining or keeping it day so I can actually see what I'm doing. It was a block made for creative mode, and creative mode is a portion of the game made by Mojang.
Custom maps are not made by Mojang so theres really no reason why they would or should develop for something they aren't making. Otherwise that's like saying Bethesda should include extra content in Skyrim only for the people who create mods, and it won't be useful in the vanilla game.
The Elytra being available in survival means its intended use is for the survival gamemode (where as the command block is the creative gamemode) so obviously it must be designed around the principle of use in standard vanilla survival. Then it goes to my statement of I believe for the effort required to actually get the Elytra in survival, its actual use isn't very practical.

Did you see the video I posted?
No infrastructure needed XD. The punch bow is totally practical simply because you don't have to build anything to use it. You can take off from a stretch of flat ground, and with a drop/slope of 4-5 blocks, it becomes incredibly easy.
The "effort to reward" ratio is probably the best method of travel in the game. You don't need to construct anything as soon as you have the punch bow and the elytra. You can travel infinitely (ok, limited by elytra durability, but with unbreaking and mending, you're talking infinite for all intents and purposes) without building anything. No prebuilt infrastructure. Just fly wherever you want with infinite thrust.

Well, i tried it out. TBH with you, i think you're right. It's just too much for something so little. It would be cool if you could repair it, BUT NO! You have to go to the end AGAIN and get another one FOR SAKE!! It's just gliding, and as you said you will land no matter what. There's really no use for it (but doing a gif that FOR SAKE ONLY 2 PEOPLE WILL LIKE). BTW this is my first reply, sorry for overreacting.
PS: Don't do the gif thing..

the real point is flying in survival it doesn't matter what use it has, its fun to do and just put unbreaking on it and it will last longer.

You can actually repair it. Stick the Elytra in an anvil with leather. Yeah I'd be so much more upset if you couldn't repair them.

I do want to drive the nail in the coffin about the difference between flying and gliding. You do not fly with the Elytra, flying requires you being able to gain lift without external methods (birds flapping their wings, jets using their engines, etc) Gliding is when you are unable to gain lift on your own and instead you make a slow descent.

yes i know its gliding thats what i mean when i say "flying" :/ also i tried the elytra and you are able to gain a little lift if you accelerate fast enough then point up
i think I'm just forget about this post theres to much technical stuff for my already small brain to handle

I'm loving those launchers. I hope they don't get nerfed.

I'm astounded no one posted this before me.

not in my point of view (ps i haven't actually tried the elytra out yet but i will today so what do i know)
