I love how amazing shields are for blocking damage. Absolutely phenomenal at stopping creeper explosions from ruining your day. But we need diamond shields. Not for the purpose of damage reduction, because really I don't think they need to be any better at that. They just need a much larger chunk of durability. I don't like that on a single mining excavation trip I blow through more than two shields and almost a third one. Any thoughts on this? And for that matter does anyone disagree?
You can combine the shield with an unbreaking book to add more durability. The durability still isn't great, but it's something.
If Unbreaking works on shields like it does on armor that's just a waste of a good book and XP; even an infinite level of Unbreaking is less effective on armor than Unbreaking I on a tool (it only works up to 40% of the time, or a 1.66 fold increase in lifetime; on tools lifetime is (level + 1) times longer) - they should change it so it works the same way on any item, which would help offset the fact that diamond armor is now weaker than leather armor in situations like creeper blasts (you have to play on Easy if you don't want them to be able to one-shot you). Increasing the durability of armor would also be a good idea, and even with the same durability as tools it is still 8 times more resource expensive since you need 4 diamonds to repair one piece on an anvil (16 total; 24 for a new set after every 6 repairs) as opposed to 2 for a sword (using a new sword).
In fact, did you know that diamond (forget about lesser tiers) armor is a staggering 77 times more resource expensive than a diamond sword (i.e. you need to deal 77 attacks with your sword for every hit you take to balance it out; for lapis and enchanting costs (ignoring the chance of a specific enchantment) it is 38 times. I'm sure nobody can achieve such a ratio of attacks vs damage taken outside of controlled conditions)? Not kidding; besides the 8 fold increase in materials mentioned above the average durability is only about 650 (454 without Unbreaking) compared to 6248 for a sword (even more fun - durability loss is (damage / 4, min 1) so it can lose multiple points at once (up to 18 on Hard for a point-blank creeper blast). Shields are absolutely miserable in this department, losing (damage + 1) durability per hit - a creeper on Hard can take nearly half the durability away in one hit - even if it does work on shields as on tools Unbreaking is still not worthwhile).
I completely agree with you guys, shields definitely need more material types. Feels kinda weird having different types of armor, weapons, but only one shield. But the colored shields...thank goodness those are gone.
I also had an idea that maybe shields could also have different types with different advantages/disadvantes.
For example, there may be a leather hide shield or a wooden shield that doesn't protect as much and breaks faster, but is faster to move around. Where as an iron shield would be much more protective and have better durability, but move slower. I don't know just an idea. Shields also need some enchantments (unless they already have some and I'm just missing it).
Shields could also use a different design. Right now we have rectangles...

Books and XP can easily be obtained in survival through villager trading and XP farms - should you choose to play in such a manner (Which I do, so neither of these are the biggest issue for me). Although for someone who doesn't; it would be a massive waste.
I've never felt as if Diamond armor was worth the cost - hence the amount of diamonds needed combined with the durability. I've always used Iron armor and most likely will continue to do so (With the exception of a diamond chestplate since I've a villager trading such, and if I'm able to find good diamond armor within the End cities).
- And reading some of the math behind it haven't convinced me to change my mindset about armor.
This means that for diamond armor, which has 20 armor points, protection drops to zero at 40 points of damage (20 - 40 / 2) - all 40 points will get through. However, only about 26 points of damage are needed to kill you since at this point you effectively have only 7 armor points (the same as leather armor - but each point is also now 3.3% damage reduction instead of 4%; I can't even see anybody using leather armor for sure now). By contrast, a creeper blast deals up to 25, 49, or 73 points on Easy-Hard; on Easy 25 damage is reduced to 18.75 - compared to only 14.6 damage on Hard prior to 1.9 (73 * 20%). For lesser damage sources, such as zombies (2-3-4) this only has a small effect (you'll still need a dozen hits to die on Hard).

Wait what? I thought this was supposed to be a compromise between Terraria's and Minecraft's armor system. Now you're telling me it's even more extreme than Terraria's?!

I agree. Maybe they could add a slimed shield with more durability?

Please help my dragons.
I think they will add more shields types because of the new shield recipe:
They can replace the wood for the other materials:(cobblestone, iron, diamond, etc...)
PLEASE MOJANG/MICROSOFT!

Gone? They're not gone, unless you meant the default design.
Please explain

The formula for armor protection now factors in how much damage you receive:
damage = damage * ( 1 - ( defensePoints - damage / 2 ) / 30 ).
This means that for diamond armor, which has 20 armor points, protection drops to zero at 40 points of damage (20 - 40 / 2) - all 40 points will get through. They were replaced with this mechanic:
You can now put BANNERS on shields.
Much better.
