With the new addition of shields, new pvp tactics are possible, such as a shield wall! I tried the new snapshots and it seems that monsters get pushed back by shields, and a row of players carrying shields could use this as a pretty good defensive tactic. What are your thoughts on this?
Do some 300 style turtle shelling or a phalanx? Awesome awesome awesome!!
Nations at at war just got a whole lot better. Imagine it!
You you see an army approaching. You fire your arrow barrage. The enemy advance with shields up, pushing back your team with arrow support from behind and players with swords hitting through the gaps...
That's a wonderful idea! Multiplayer servers could have huge battle maps, and have all the advanced players who knew tactics work together. Unfortunately, it's going to be a looong time until Bukkit 1.9 comes out.
It is a neat idea but I don't think it would translate to the game that well. With mobs in PvE, well... I've never had a reason to block mobs, with shield or back when it used swords. The only time I would was if a Skeleton was in my way and I NEEDED to get past it, and even then sprinting would get me closer faster and was safer in the long run.
In PvP it would be a bit more useful, if and only if you can get people to cooperate, which is hard to do without voice chat and a team you are close to, which means your experience trying this may vary lol. And besides, a couple splash potions lobbed in the center might break that tactic up fast.

Honestly, formations were theoretically already decently powerful in pvp (i.e. tons of people knocking people aside rather than forward if they're trying to reach the enemy's flag). But no one wanted to put the effort in to organize them. Shields are definitely buffing organization though.
Probably the best formation will be ranks. I.e. people with a shield on low ground and people with bows on high ground behind them. The people with shields can't really get pushed back further than they want to.
But the shield wall would be just as good as a random blob of people with shields, the way I see it. It works in real life because of reasons like overlapping shields holding the other shields up and attacking while blocking.

Sounds epic, but you can't really hold your shield up yet, maybe mojang should add that.
Well... You can, but the shield won't point upwards, it'll stay at the same height as normal and rotate (it only points upwards in first person, to everyone else, it doesn't). You can block arrows from above, but it won't look like it.

Seems like it would work well for PVP. Just got out of a game on the Overcast server. Took an hour of the same game till I quit.
Some people built a 5-6 block wide bridge in the center. The number of people on it...
At one point, two people (in front of me and a group of people firing bows) shielded. Three or four arrows heading toward us were immediately intercepted. If we could organize people to do so on the sides, and have everyone slowly walk forward, we could have dealt a lot of damage. I mean, everything else was fairly organized. People were rushing in groups and building bridges below the main one and making an underground base in the perfect position to intercept tunnels (I found that out the hard way.)
So yeah. It seems like it could be effective against arrows. Someone needs to get a bunch of friends and organize this on overcast.

I hadn't though about this. I don't think it would be very useful, but might be somehow.

Spears, Daggers, and Hammers for 1.9
This reminds me of tactic Ancient Romans did...
Click them, come on!
We need spears to go along with these shields
No it wouldn't, because axes disable shields.
Knockback does apply to people blocking. just not much.

I really don't know what to put here...
You can't?
Just block and look up, right?
