In the new update, axes have become stronger than swords. Seriously. Wood axe=diamond sword. Only way less durability. But still! A diamond axe has become my weapon of choice; it has 10 damage. I intend to enchant it with all the things I would use on a sword in 1.8. I love this new change, but find it bizarre. What are your thoughts on it?

Whatever I just said, I didn't mean any offense. Unless we're fighting, in which case I probably did.
If I said something was a joke when it didn't seem like one, I'm making an excuse to avoid an argument I know is coming. Instead of telling me how not funny I am and how it didn't seem like a joke at all, just go along with it. Because flame wars suck and nobody wants to be a part of one.

Well, in all honesty, the sword I think is better. Way higher speed, hence the greater DPS. I also watched Etho's most recent LP and he calculated everything and figured that the axe is actually a little less powerful than the sword. Who knows, maybe we'll see an enchantment that makes the attack speed greater? Though I doubt it seeing as it would unbalance things.
I would still probably use a sword due to the higher speed and special slash attack. I also saw Etho's video, and he said that the sword is better for iron and diamond tiers, equal for the stone tier, and the axe is better for gold and wooden tiers.

Good point. But what do I use my axe for now? P.S. I'm the only person on the face of the Earth who doesn't watch Etho.

Axes are also a poor choice because they wear out twice as fast, which means you spend twice as much effort to enchant and repair them (especially important since 1.8 because you must replace all of your items, although spending 3 levels several times to re-enchant is likely cheaper than spending, say, 35 levels to repair a sword for a couple diamonds (70 levels and 4 diamonds for a full repair), as I do in an older version for my Sharpness V, Knockback II, Unbreaking III diamond sword. However, this is an inconvenience when you go out on very long trips since it is much easier to carry along an anvil than an enchanting setup).
Also, there is a claim that hoes are better than swords but that ignores damage immunity - even prior to 1.9 you could click up to 20 times per second (once per tick) but only two of the hits would actually have any effect (even more fun - prior to 1.7, as I still play in, this would cause your sword to lose durability up to 10x faster, one reason why I don't spam-click and value Knockback). Of course, it helps when you have a dozen zombies attacking you since you can hit them in rapid succession, which might be considered "spam-clicking", but I'm referring to clicking as fast as you can to kill just one mob or player (which can even be slower in some cases than accurately timed hits; e.g. three strikes in one second but one occurs during the damage immunity interval so has no effect unless it was a critical hit (higher damage does bypass damage immunity), thus the time between effective hits is longer than two hits just over half a second apart).
Axes have a higher damage on hit but due to the slower swing speed, they have a lower DPS than swords. Addtionally, axes have no swipe attack, and have a durability penalty when used to damage things meaning they wear out twice as fast.
They are absolutely not the weapon of choice right now. You would only use an axe if you want to deal a large amount of damage in one hit or disable another player's shield. Running them 24/7 will prove to be overall less effective than swords.
You would only use an axe if you want to deal a large amount of damage in one hit or disable another player's shield.
Keep in mind that the lower attack speed lets you take more time to block and set up critical hits, which may be enough to compensate for the ~10% decrease in DPS.
For proper combat I prefer the sword due to faster recharge and the ability to knock back multiple enemies.
For the slaughter of animals? A stone axe can reliably one-shot a cow on a critical hit. Particularly good if your animal containment areas are particularly crowded and you don't want to chase down the animal you're trying to kill.
I do see the real life application that they are trying to apply. I guess you could consider the axe being a bigger weapon so it would have a higher hitting points but, Im sure the sword will have it's perks as well. I personally like the new additions that they are making to the weapons.

I like that axes are now stronger and now people can be real baccas and also i would switch between sword and axe cuz the axe has the shield stun attack and the sword i use for crowds
Exactly. Take out someone's shield with your axe, then switch to sword and slice them up. Or slice a mob up with the sword, then deliver the coup de grace with the axe. That's the beauty, you can mix up your attacks.
I have more than enough wood already. Maybe a villager will want something wooden to trade for emeralds.

Like others said, the sword may still be better for most situations.
There is one thing that bothers me about it though. Personally, I'm not sure how I feel about it fitting in with Minecraft. Swords have always been the "fighting" weapon, and making axes stronger just feels...weird. Similar way I feel time to time about the shield and weapon mechanics too. Does anyone else feel this way, or is it just me?
Another thing I'm wondering about is hoes, will they become OP with the damage increase + sharpness and infinite durability when attacking?

You can't enchant them with sharpness yet. Mojang might change that though, since you can enchant axes now.
My vision for hoes was to let you dump milk on enemies and then nerf hoes so that they are worse unless you are using the new strength pots, so that way it's good until someone dumps milk on you xD

Axe attacks so slowly that it does less DPS (damage per second).
To compensate, it can break shields and its slow attacks allow you a little more time to block and prepare a critical hit.
Overall, it's situational, but probably about the same strength as swords atm.
Spears, Daggers, and Hammers for 1.9

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Go on a chopping trip, of course.
Perhaps a wooden mob could be added to keep axes relevant as weapons.

I'm totally used to it because of MCMMO and instanced pvp servers making axes sometimes better than swords.
Now, fast hoes? That's weird, but I think I'm okay with weird.

Swords as of right now.
1. You can't add lootin gor fire aspect on an axe yet.
2. Durability goes down twice as fast.
