Yeah it sucks that people hate the 1.9 update people even say minecraft 1.6.4 was better then 1.8 and higher. I love the 1.9 update it adds more to battling and makes PVP more interesting, and like some people said younger/older people grew up with games that were really simple with battling. I had it hard when I started minecraft so I think 1.9 is a major update not just for combat but also for the brand new end islands, plants, and mobs. People who say 1.9 is bad or the worst minecraft update and stuff like that don't know what real gaming is about.
Anyway I like 1.9 and its a big step for minecraft and i am hoping for more awesome stuff in the updates to come.

Gaming is about entertainment. If folks aren't entertained with the new changes, or the new changes interfere with their entertainment its a problem for them. Simple.
They shouldn't have to modify their game to fix Mojang's apparent failures. Minecraft is Mojang's responsibility.
Or they could just downgrade to the official release of Minecraft and play that while we play on the newer versions and have fun. If they don't like it, don't upgrade. Updates change things, if they don't like change they shouldn't be on the newer versions anyway.

I just addressed why that doesn't work two comments ago! I'll even quote myself so that you'll actually read it.
I wish 1.9 actually had significant changes. It feels like an update that is just going to happen and that's it, I didn't want it or anything but I'm not against it being made because there is nothing that affects me in any way, the dual wielding is practical and that's that, there is nothing interesting here.
On the bright side, yesterday I saw a person who loses sleep over a new crop or something, so there is that.
People resorting to the "just don't update" argument are not wrong, actually I'm probably not updating for the first time since 2011 myself and I won't make a fuss about it, but they miss a little detail: Mojang doesn't want people to stay on older versions. For them, it's an issue.
I'm not sure why. I just learned that on a relatively old discussion on IRC between Grum and Arcanis, a modder.
[01:33] Arcanis: And stick with 1.6.4, backport new things from newer versions, and never update because updating is always such a nightmare.
[01:33] Grum: and we'll shut down access for 1.6.4 eventually then
[01:33] Grum: because we actually do not want this to happen
Just read the thing, Grum came out kind of as an asshole, though I do understand some of his reasoning.
It sucks how much mods are ignored, there are many things I don't like with the new versions like the terrain for example, and even though modding should not be a way to solve those issues it turns out to be the only decent alternative, and now mods hardly update at all. I see little reason to play vanilla minecraft.
They can't do that because, no matter what they do, they'll never be able to please the whole fanbase.
The point is that saying something like "they still have mods" doesn't really solve the actual problems. Any more than fanfics solve the problems of the stories they're derived from, or fan-films solve the problems of the movies they address.
This update is not a good one for a couple of reasons. 1. Minecraft is supposed to be a fairly simple game, we don't need any of these new mechanics 2. Minecraft was awesome they way that it was, some features in this update are cool but most of the combat-related ones suck, combat was already good. I would rather pvp 1.8 style than 1.9 style because its more simple and actually makes sense (Really mojang? Shooting a bow with one hand?)
Let Wikipedia answer that one for you.
Alternatively, I can just say that it's a container for holding arrows, and it's worn on the body, attached via a strap or something.
I will not update just because of this. This update has to many added mechanics to a rather simple game yes some people play more complex with redstone and such but they remove the basic simplicity that everybody loves. With all these new complex mechanics (shields, dual wielding, hit timers, etc.) nobody will want to play anymore because it takes away all the simplicity. When you start out in the world you will have way more to do and accomplish and it will be way to hard to get to a decent standing. New things are cool but changing the basic mechanics of the game can really deter people from playing. Also the way they are throwing around stats and damage and effects of God Apples and everything is to confusing they should just keep it the same and quit changing it because people get used to the way thing work and then comes the update everything they remember about their basic damage willl be wrong and they will misinterpret what they need to kill mobs or anything else which will be very annoying. Another point i will make is that the pvp community is rather large and even though i am not a part of it i understand exactly how they feel and these new mechanics will completely change the way that they work and Minecraft will lose alot of players and they will make less money which is their ultimate goal, but if they want to ruin minecraft its their choice, but i for one have no support for these updates and the things in the current snapshot.
First of all everyone that is saying only pvpers hate this no just no this update just sucks like tbh why would u add a swing timer and shields it just makes the game unfun what are they going to do next get rid of blocks.Just this update needs to go kill its self and suffocate in some sand.
Oh look, a serious case of Slippery Slope Fallacy.
You also really haven't given reasons on why you dislike the attack cooldown and shields, or how it makes the game less fun.

You do have a good point, but simplicity is not always the answer. In my opinion, combat was in need of an overhaul for a long time. And by the way, you can't swing your sword while your bow is charged, so it makes some sense.

Thats' the thing with games, they can't stay as they are forever. Updates are what keep the community alive, and people will have to adapt. The best PvPers are the ones who can adapt to any situation and maintain a positive outcome.

Well there is still lots of time fore balancing and new features so there is still hope.

Keep saying "don't update", but Mojang would hate that.

Because making Minecraft the best it can be isn't Mojang's job?
My argument is that they shouldn't have to, not that they won't.

The only thing I can agree with what you said is the bows being shot with one hand, completely stupid addition.
What are quivers anyway?
