Seriously? ANOTHER update? One was JUST released... Every time the stupid game is updated it breaks all the mods. I mean, really, do you have to update every 3 days? Can you NOT please? Save it all for full point releases. This every other day nonsense is tedious and infuriating. I play one day, go back to play the next and all of sudden it doesn't start anymore... . This is ridiculous. Absolutely absurd.
Update the game, fine. Just not every other day. That's just excessive.
Alternatively, they can update and you can choose not to play it. You can access all version of the game with your browser. Just because you can't be bothered selecting a different version doesn't mean we should all be denied a security patch.

Yeah, I think sometimes people forget, they aren't forced to update. (The joys of having multiple game version profiles.)
I still play just fine on my modded 1.7.10 version, and I get to enjoy 1.8 as well without breaking a thing.
Actually, yes, yes you are forced to update. It doesn't ASK it just does it. Especially if you use Forge. I have yet to be able to find a way to disable this behavior and have found discussions of people talking about this autoupdate scourge.
Frankly without mods, MC isn't worth playing (IMHO). The lack of a minimap is egregious in this day and age. I won't even bother playing survival mode - I tried a few times and it was dreadful. The *only* thing that interests me in the slightest is creative mode. It's only value to me is as a giant box of legos and exploring caves and such.
I've been playing the game for years and used to run a server, but stopped because the ceaseless updating every 3 seconds continually forced me spend more time fixing the server mods than playing. MC only shines when mods like WordEdit are used. Otherwise, it's tedious and boring for me and those who played on my server.
Frankly, I can't wait until the Lego game fleshes out more. It's going to stomp MC to dust.

Sure it updates without asking, but who says you can't go back to the game version you were using prior to the update? (For me, its a simple as going down to "Profile" and selecting the version I want, modded or not, even with Forge) I have like 6 different Forge profiles as well, none of the vanilla updates have a effected those profiles. Sure, sometimes I have to move some mods around, but I use more effort going to the bathroom.
The server I have been playing on has been on 1.7.10 forever, with like 24 mods on it. We have went through so many 1.8 vanilla updates and never had one show stopper because of an update.
Granted, it does take time for mods to update to the latest version of vanilla, but its been that way forever.
It states that these updates are compatible with ALL 1.8 updates.
Yup. I'm stating that just because an update comes out, it doesn't break mods or even plugins.
It DOES mean, that the mods and plugins will eventually have to update if the authors choose to do so. Some find a version they find suitable and stick with it, and keep refining it, which isn't a bad idea really.
The short version is: With game profiles, I can play on 1.5.2 if I want, and even when the 1.8.6 update came out, it didn't effect that profile at all.
Seriously? ANOTHER update? One was JUST released... Every time the stupid game is updated it breaks all the mods. I mean, really, do you have to update every 3 days? Can you NOT please? There are mods for 1.8x versions? Just kidding.
You can stop the auto-update if you want or roll back your version, just be sure to remember that you have done it.
I'm at work right now so I can't do a proper step-by step but this should still help. On the bottom left corner of your launcher you can click a button to edit your profile. When the profile window opens there will be a drop down menu in it somewhere that lists the version of minecraft you want it to run. Yours will say something like "Current Version" if I recall correctly. This means it will always auto update. Just use the drop-down to select whichever version of minecraft you want to stay on then click save. That particular profile will now always run that version no matter what.
There is a chance you may have to select another option on the profile editing page first, something about allowing point versions or some such. I wish my memory was better or that I had minecraft at hand atm. Hopefully this helps.

See, I tried that. Problem is, that only works for vanilla Minecraft versions, NOT forge versions. Look closely at the options, they are not "Forge release XXX". I use forge, to use my mods, it really wouldn't matter in the slightest if I were just wanting to play vanilla... When you select previous versions (at least on my copy) it uses a VANILLA version, not the forge version. I have tried that method and it doesn't load any of the mods.
Also, just because mods are supposed to be compatible with all 1.8.x iterations, doesn't mean it's true. In the last month alone I have had MC fail to start 3 times after an update, until I update a mod to whatever .x point release my copy has been auto-updated to. All I am saying, is that either save all the minor .x releases and update once a month or so, all at once, or give me way to prevent the game from updating at all...preferably until I ask to update.

Using the "use version" dropdown, installed Forge versions are at the very bottom of the list.
Also if you pick forge from that list, the launcher doesn't "auto update" your client. It will use the version you have selected for that profile. Unless you pick "Use Latest Version" then it will automatically download the update when you play.

That's not what they mean by "compatible" - they mean that 1.8.x clients are compatible with all 1.8.x servers.
As for mods, there is this nasty thing called obfuscation that causes every update to have different names used for class, method, and field names, which breaks mods as they depend on a certain class being called abc or whatever.
For example, the class MapGenCaves (MCP name, which is only used in the source for ease of coding, otherwise it reobfuscates the compiled code back to the original name) has the following names in their respective versions; the only changes made to this class occurred between 1.6.4-1.7.2 and 1.7.10-1.8 - yet they have different internal names so trying to use the class for 1.8.3 in 1.8.7 (or 1.8) will either do nothing or crash the game:
1.6.2: aep
1.6.4: aeq
1.7.2: api
1.7.10: aqw
1.8: bgs
1.8.3: any
(this is also a case where I could make a simple mod right now that gives you back 1.6.4 caves in 1.8.7, though I haven't bothered updating since there is no difference as far as singleplayer is concerned and I don't see the point in making umpteen different versions, even if it only takes a few minutes to update, without using MCP, I'll make one last update for 1.8.x when it appears to be over; some other mods I have need MCP, which hasn't been updated since 1.8, and may never have a 1.8.x version).

Yeah.
Each version of Forge I have installed, a profile was created for it automatically during the installation.
I just rename the profile to something I can easily remember from the default "Forge" name in the profile and put what version of Minecraft it is for and the last 4 numbers of the forge version. I think if you leave the default name as "Forge" it will overwrite the profile if another version is installed. (Not entirely sure.)
Then usually its just a matter of moving mods around sometimes.

How hard is it go to the bottom of the list and select the Forge version. The game doesn't auto update unless you selected the "Use Latest Version". So really this thread is pointless.

you can set it to not update in the edit profile window. If not, then you should either re-download the launcher, or you may have a fake minecraft launcher. I think they exist, and they launch minecraft without getting mojang approval. Not saying your launcher is fake, but it is possible. May even look like the real thing.
Last time I checked, it takes months for them to bring out the updates, not three days. So, that complaint does not make sense. Also you don't need to go with the updates, with the new launcher you can always just edit your profile, and choose which version you wish, thus allowing you to continue playing on your mods with it's updating and such.
