They had said at some point they were looking at making a more durable boat. Perhaps this is it and you can find something there that lets you craft one.
They're probably just going to port the boats from Pocket Edition/Windows 10, which have functionable riding code, are unbreakable, have a paddle system, and can carry 2 mobs.

Paddle system... shovels have a better use, too?

That would be sweet! Only downside is that Pocket Edition boats are rather slow. I suppose it makes sense since you're paddling (yes, with a wooden shovel), but still.
Also, clearly you won't be steering it the same way. Not sure how that'll work with mouse and keyboard.

I don't know either. but a shovel with Efficiency enchant should speed up the boat. That way, if you used a resource pack to make boats go-karts and water to black road and a wood shovel to a steering wheel, you could use commands to get a higher Efficiency level to speed up the boat more! If there is a max speed to the boats, then Efficiency would increase acceleration! Boom, boom, boats are the new car! Crashable too! (hope the collision detecting is possible to fix, and maybe can be put into NBT format to set collision speed to break the boat!)

When using the boat on Win10 Edition with a keyboard, you use A & D to paddle left and right. It could be the same here.

Is anyone else getting curious about the cryptic hint Dinnerbone tweeted? The one about the boats? Does anyone have any speculation about that? I think he might be hinting at a huge feature they want to 'leak' thus creating a 'sinking ship' - I'm probably wrong though.
He might be talking about boats, but it seems like it could just as easily be about the End Ship loot.
But now, the axes have been completely op-ified, and now swords seem stupid.
Axes actually have pretty mediocre DPS, swords are better than them in every tier except wood last time I checked (which was before they got a tiny speed increase/damage decrease). A crit with Sharpness IV (I think) or better will oneshot most mobs which is pretty big in Survival, but in PvP their only real use is to kill shields and to open fights with.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
Dunno what to think about this. I'm neutral. Like yeah, it would be more realistic, but I'm really frustrated when doing animal farms in Pocket Edition because of this. And what if ocelot sneaks to you and pushes you, then ocelot freaks out and runs away? I noticed dis in Pocket Edition too.

"This is not a signature" - This statement is a paradox.
Well I just played the latest snapshot, and I feel like dumping my current thoughts out.
So when the weapons were first changed, I was hugely against it. I'm still not sure.
Anyways, looked like axes were debuffed a bit, possibly being a bit slower. I'm still not sure they're worse than swords, I've found it much more damaging to use axes still, and for me the swing time didn't seem hugely different. I'm also not sure how I feel about axes being the new "strong" weapons, as swords have been the Minecraft "best weapon" for the longest time, and changing the combat system like this, I'm not sure if it fits the game that well.
As for hoes, now they swing really fast, but have their previous added damage removed. I find that kind of weird personally, as first, hoes are fairly big tools, so I don't really see how it swings super fast.
Basically, the new snapshot just feels...weird for me.
Excellent idea. Always asked myself why the non-colliding was implemented in the first place. It didn't made any kind of sense and made farming animals a little bit overpowered: a hunderd pigs crambled in a pen of four blocks and still be able to walk just through them as if they were air is pretty insane.
Farming animals wasn't fun then. Trying to accomplish anything with mobs was usually aggravating. Attempting to herd them when you only wanted them to move a little bit was nearly impossible. Of course, with the offhand it's easier to lead animals with bait of their choice, but it's still going to be obnoxious.
While I seldom hate new features, this is a feature that I always loathed and I was not happy at all when I saw this coming back. Trying to farm animals especially with loads of them in farms was annoying as heck... I had got peace when it was removed. Moving animals around and not colliding with players was so useful. But now the bane of farmings and servers existence has returned...

No. We're talking about paddles as in ores used to row a boat.
Shovels are used as paddles in the PE/Win10 versions, they are part of the crafting recipe for boats.

I think either boats are getting revamped or a new type of boat is being added.

Aha, thanks for clearing that up.
Huh, they added the colliding with mobs back. https://twitter.com/Dinnerbone/status/638282256151375872

Players not colliding with stuff was a bug to begin with.
Parkour maps that have multiple players standing on a 1x1 space are probably going to be hell.

Well parkour servers are pretty much screwed with player collision coming back...

Figured it was time for a change.
Finally! I love having the playing collision back. Shoving my sisters off their builds was awesome.
Why are guinea pigs called guinea pigs when they are neither pigs or from guinea?
