Question is, what resides in said igloo? Yeti or maybe a snow biome village perhaps?
A yeti would be really cool to see. The question is, would it be hostile, passive until attacked, or maybe even tamable. Now that would be cool. Or maybe it's just wild versions of snow golems.
Im just getting back into minecraft(last time I played was when they added the end). One thing I always hated was having to start a new world to get a lot of the new stuff. I'm trying to actually stick to one world, so should I just wait until 1.9 comes out? Or maybe start a world but stay in a small area so I don't generate much of the map?

I personally like to start a new world for every update.

Shields are added and, you can customize them using banners.
Swords can no longer block the attacks.
When your using a shield, you can't attack
Downsides of 1.9
There's a new way to control boats.
Sharpness enchantment went down a bit. (this might be great for map makers)
I'll edit this comment when I think of more stuff.
So nothing here about the new ender features or anything massive like that. Also you think boat improvement- something that people have been wanting for years now is bad. Well I guess your saying that the only good things that have come out of 1.9 are swords and shields, and removal of sword blocking is stated here as a good thing as well. Its not a good thing if they didn't add shields and because they did it doesn't matter anyway so its neither an improvement nor a downside.
TBH I was expecting more than a tutorial on how to purify villagers under the igloos but I will say that they look pretty good for such a small structure

I notice you all are forgetting the mending enchantment... It takes xp and repairs broken stuff with it. so if you're Elytra break just kill monsters or mine ores. also it doesn't take a lot of xp at all.
I would hardly call it forgotten. The mending enchantment was listed in here a couple times already, and anyone who plays snapchots ought to know what it is, seeing how it's the only way to repair your elytra (at least to my knowledge). Probably my favorite new enchantment. Frost walker is cool, but i have depth strider III boots and a respiration III helmet, so i don't really need it. And the ice can't be mined anyway. It's only good for creating temporary bridges for crossing water, which is pretty sick, but not really all that helpful.

I see a villager and a curable villager in the igloos, so I can build a village in the snow plains from them rather than pulling a pair in from a far warm place. Pretty neat!

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Which means, of course, that it will have a Frost Walker enchantment book in it. Because those needed to be more common.

Frozen npc villages.
It's also in a cold environment. That would make sense too, no?
Figured it was time for a change.

Yay, I got an achievement

How is the improved boat function a downside?

Bone app the teeth.
The loot table will be good for map makers and people who use command blocks a lot!
