Yeah.. My results were not including looking at the sky with who knows how small a render distance and non-moving fps spikes.. They were on-ground with fully loaded surrounding terrain and while moving. The Minecraft tests were with a render distance of 12 and 32. The Block Story tests were with ALL Graphics options Maxed out with the exception of some of the tests with lower render distances but never below Default for either game.

You are really weird. As my unusual friend would say, you're a "washing machine" for liking 1.8. It's so stupid! Here's why:
OCEAN MONUMENT: I would like it if it weren't for the Guardians and Elder Guardians. Plus the actual "treasure" inside. In other structures (except Dungeons and Nether Fortresses) there are no naturally spawning hostile mobs that guard the "treasure," which is just a gold block. Gold is useless, except for clocks and villager trading. (Sky sucks, and you can't change my mind about that, "Recruits".)
BUNNIES: They are simply pointless and annoying.
ARMOR STANDS: They always look suspicious to me...
RAW MUTTON: It's a whole new aspect of the game that you need to get used to. It makes killing sheep sound like a good thing. Also it looks weird because it is not shaped like the other meats in the game.
SLIME BLOCKS: What's the point, other than to make anvils bounce up and down? That's hilarious to watch, but other than that... pointless.
In other words, 1.8 sucked. Probably because Mojang felt pressured by Microsoft, even if they didn't want to tinker with the game.

That treasure isn't 1 gold block; it's 8 gold blocks which can be used to craft the Notch Apple, and so much more! (And no, I'm not a Sky fan.)

Slime blocks are the only blocks that don't give you fall damage, when jumping from a high area, and save space, when compared to putting multiple stacks of slimeballs in a chest.

Again, 1.8 was meant for everyone. Just because you find things pointless does not mean other people will.
Ocean structures and guardians, it adds a new goal to the game, increasing the length of the game to some people. Bunnies, it makes the world feel more alive and dynamic, instead of a static world. Armour stands, can place armour and display armour, and can be used in redstone contraptions to do some amazing stuff (look at some of the stuff Sethbling has made with armour stands, he's even made furniture with them, and one of those pecker bird contraptions that bobs up and down on top of water). Raw mutton, another source of food for players who cannot get other sources for some reason. Slime blocks, allows for building complex redstone contraptions because when moved by pistons, they move all other blocks attached.

Well, it overhauled the Mob AI, overhauled the Block rendering format, overhauled the way the game handles IDs, overhauled the Block data format/Chunk format, added a few mobs, added new items, made Villagers useful, created Humanity with Alex, oh and made a ton of map-makers happy. I don't see why that wouldn't take a year.

People aren't complaining about the content that was added so much as how long it too to add that content. For a years work they really didn't add a whole lot. Most of what was added is re-skins of other blocks.
The performance issues are also a huge negative. There would have been a whole lot less complaining if Mojang took some steps to fix the lag.

Because most of that time was spent rewriting the engine, NOT content.

And what people don't realise is not everything Mojang worked on was actual content accessible ingame. Mojang completely redesigned and revamped the rendering engine, which has had varied effects (some setups benefit hugely from it, seeing double, sometimes triple framerates, others have suffered, and some haven't changed at all). The problem is people are complaining when they have no idea how much time it takes to actually add new functionality into a project, most of the people complaining are complaining for the sake of complaining when they have no idea about the code behind the scenes. Who cares about the few blocks added? The majority of updates have been trying to recode the game (Minecraft suffers HUGELY from "code fragmentation", when Notch started Minecraft, he didn't expect the game to get this big and content-rich, so he mostly wrote sloppy and clunky code that did what he wanted it to do, but in a very inefficient and slow way. The recent updates (1.3 and above IMO) have been attempting to fix this in sections, 1.3 rewrote the two "sides" of logic (client and server) so that the game ran smoother and the client could be "dumbed down" and more lightweight, making rendering much quicker (for example, moving entity logic out of the client thread and into the server thread), I don't think 1.4 included major code changes and rewrites, 1.5 changed how the game's texture system worked to make textures easier to work with and more flexible (so you can have two textures with different resolutions, but both would load without extra effort, animated texture support, etc), 1.6 introduced a new asset system allowing resource packs to modify game assets outside of textures (sounds, localisation files, etc), 1.7 introduced a new ID system and revamped networking to use Netty instead of a custom Sockets system and 1.8 changed the rendering engine from a clunky hardcoded system to a more slimline and quicker shader-esque system) to be more organised as a project, while still maintaining new content for players who don't know or want to know about the internals of the game.
IMO one of the main reasons why so many people suffered from lag is both because Mojang probably did leave some major optimisation issues unaddressed, but also because Minecraft is now moving up the ladder for hardware intensity, albeit not by much, but still a considerable amount. Back before 1.7, Minecraft operated using a clunky and slow rendering engine that was mostly hardcoded and executed by the CPU, this is why Minecraft worked flawlessly on systems with older and cheaper GPUs, when other games weren't playable, it didn't require a beefy GPU because the rendering engine was so basic and most of the calculations were done with the CPU (which basically moves the problem onto the CPU). In 1.7 Mojang implemented a brand new rendering pipeline that allowed the same calculations to be performed on the GPU, which means the game overall performs better when it comes to rendering and graphics.
Now let's talk about OpenGL. OpenGL is a graphics library, it's job is to basically allow a program to interface with your graphics card and tell your graphics card what to do, another example is DirectX. Early versions of OpenGL are found on wide ranges of GPUs, both old and new. Minecraft used to only rely on a very old version of OpenGL, that had a plethora of performance issues (mainly was just hugely bulky and slow), but was compatible with old and weak systems. Because Minecraft is now adopting and moving over to a new rendering paradigm (shader programs instead of hardcoded instructions), Minecraft had to start moving to more recent OpenGL versions to push the most performance out of it's shaders while still maintaining compatibility with older hardware, but just like anything that you upgrade, someone is always going to be negatively affected. Because of the move forward, compatibility with hardware that could only support older OpenGL versions was dropped (this was about 1.7.2 - 1.7.4 IIRC), so now a heap of users could no longer play the game at all under the new versions because their hardware was too old to support the game. This move wasn't so bad, as it was only incredibly old hardware that was affected (10 year old hardware), but still a lot of users could not play the game, and Mojang couldn't do anything to fix it, the user simply had to either accept it and not play on the new versions, or get a new computer / component that could support the newer OpenGL versions.
Then came 1.8. During 1.7, Mojang did implement the new shading pipeline, but the game still mainly used the old rendering engine, so performance wasn't really affected unless users wanted to use shaders. 1.8 however did away with the old rendering engine and fully implemented and utilised the new shader pipeline. Systems that are too weak to support the pipeline smoothly were crippled, whilst systems that could support the pipeline smoothly saw FPS increases of 200%, and higher even (me being one of them on 2 different systems, one is an Aspire 5733Z with an Intel iGPU (the lowest quality graphics card available, not powerful at all), 30 FPS at most in 1.7 (without Optifine), 1.8 saw 60+ FPS without Optifine, Aspire V3 572G 55FT with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 840M dedicated graphics card (an entry level laptop graphics card that supports OpenGL 5.0 and can play last gen games flawlessly at ultra settings and above with 60 FPS, more recent games high with 30-60 FPS (depending on title), 130+ FPS on 1.7 (without Optifine), 200+ FPS on 1.8 without Optifine).
TL;DR, The complaints most users are making is with game content, when the focus of the recent updates was mainly on the behind-the-scenes stuff, and those users complaining about lag have a fair point, but must realise and accept that Mojang can do nothing about it aside from optimise the pipeline, and if your computer still can't handle the game, I'm afraid it's on your end. You can either suggest that Mojang allow users to choose between using a high-performance pipeline, or a low-performance pipeline, or upgrade your computer.

Face it this update was the worst bug riddled update in Minecraft's history. It's very obvious. It's also ironically the update that too the absolute longest.
There's no explanation for that other than complete and utter incompetence.

Don't forget, the Mojangsters rewrote a lot of the code, and Mojang made lots of updates for the console versions and pocket edition. And they added block models. That's, along with custom worlds and some of the commands, my favourite 1.8 feature. Butwhyisdatlagstillnotfixed?

1.8 - The Update the Killed Minecraft.
This game was at it's peak until this monstrosity. Mojang couldn't even be bothered to fix the bug reports before it's release, or even patch it afterwards. They ruined this game and destroyed Bukkit all in the span of a year.

You can either suggest that Mojang allow users to choose between using a high-performance pipeline, or a low-performance pipeline, or upgrade your computer.

There's no explanation for that other than complete and utter incompetence.
Aaaaand... you're still ignoring us and shoving your opinion in our faces as if it's a fact.
Minecraft is not medieval-themed!!! As a matter of fact, it doesn't have a set time. And when and WHY did putting reponses in the quote, especially long ones, become a trend in the Suggestions? It's rather inconvenient, mainly since the OP has to gather your quote up manually. Avatar made by Endergirl!

i think we should all use common sense and logic when we answer and ask a question but always stay open minded
just cause science fails to explain something does not mean its real (afterlife, big foot, ghosts etc..) does not mean its fake try to stay opened mined instead of closed

Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks we should end this discussion. We've already said everything that needed to be said. Further discussion from this point is meaningless.

Yes, I am ignoring you.
1.8 - The Update the Killed Minecraft.
This game was at it's peak until this monstrosity. Mojang couldn't even be bothered to fix the bug reports before it's release, or even patch it afterwards. They ruined this game and destroyed Bukkit all in the span of a year.
But, keep waiting for that Mod API.
