On my 1.7.5 server, I could set a V-Sync cap on my framerate, and get a constant 75 fps. (75hz monitor) Chunk updates were lower, but I was receiving above acceptable performance, and I was happy.
Now it seems that the recent "optimizations" that Mojang has put Minecraft through in the recent snapshots, have did the exact opposite of optimizing my game. I recently upgraded my server to 14w32b, and it seems that the chunk updates are sky-high (199-400) and I'm only maxing out at 40-60 fps, with drops around 12 fps sometimes.
So my question is: is anybody else having the same issue with framerate DROPS since the recent "optimization" snapshots?
I am also having the same problem. In the previous versions of minecraft (before the optimization snapshots) I run around 40 - 100 FPS but when I tried out the so called "faster" minecraft snapshot my FPS was (if I was lucky) 15. So yeah, I think they need to work the "optimizations" out a bit more before they release 1.8
You guys have to remember that this is a snapshot, and whatever is in the game at the snapshot's point may not be in the final product. They're testing things out and seeing how it all works, so you're better off reporting this directly to Mojang through their e-mail, or better yet in the Recent Updates and Snapshots section. Also note that not every snapshot is super stable.
Scrabz1, I don't think anybody is claiming this is the case across the board. But if performance has taken a step backwards for some players that does need to be addressed.
Be sure to report it on the bug tracker (or reply to a current report if the problem has already been reported) showing your system specifications. Hopefully the more people who do this the more info Mojang will have to work with to optimize the game.
There will always be some that are incompatible though, unfortunately it's unavoidable with the wide range of different hardware and software combinations that players could potentially have.
I was not posting this to alert Mojang. I was just posting this to see if anybody else was receiving the same problem. I was making sure it wasn't an issue with the way that I have Minecraft installed, or if it was a problem with my system.
I have constant FPS-increases between 30% and 100%. Before the update, I had mediocre frame rates between 20 and 25 FPS. Switching on a simple hopper clock lead to massive lag spikes. With the new, optimized snapshot my FPS are well above 30, sometimes 50 FPS.
So, no need to put optimized and faster into quotation marks. For a lot of people Minecraft runs faster, now.
Clearly not, according to this post. Looks like you're the only one.

Wasn't reporting. Just assuring that it's not a problem with my system setup.

They attempted to optimize the game by not rendering whatever is not being seen by the player. But this actually is causing problems, because what this does is it causes the game to re-render the terrain whenever the player changes directions. Thus causing more chunk updates, thus causing more lag issues.

Scrabz isn't the only one. I've also seen better FPS in the latest snapshots...at least when compared to the ones that came before it. Can't compare to 1.7.10, since I've never played that version without Optifine. The only real problem I've noticed is that sometimes, chunks fail to load, even when I'm looking straight at them. Does adjusting the "Use VBOs" option change your FPS in any way?
No. It doesn't matter what I do to attempt to improve performance. Turning shadows off, clouds off, particles off, or even changing to fast graphics. The issue here is it's rendering far too much.
And it's even worse, since I'm trying to run a multiplayer server.

I tend to get hundreds of chunk updates. Which causes my fps to fluctuate between 10 and 50. This only seemed to begin happening after I turned on vertex buffer objects aka VBOs.

Yeah. Sure hope Mojang realizes this themselves and fixes it before the release of 1.8.

The snapshots actually can give me the highest FPS I've seen with any version, up to 200+ underground, 100 on the surface. However, even turning around causes it to plummet to 30 or below, in a very unstable manner. That is also if I am able to get rid of a strange issue that started with 1.7; after rendering a certain number of frames there is a huge lag spike (unfortunately, as you can see Optifine does nothing; indeed, nothing helps except pausing the game and leaving it for a few minutes while doing something else, which sometimes gets rid of it; it doesn't return if it goes away), making the actual FPS look like 5-10 (during this period the game reports around 30 FPS, 40-60 in 1.7 but still just as noticeable; lowering the FPS limit hides it but doesn't eliminate it).

I also see much improvement with latest snapshots and the lag issues of 1.7 where chunks wouldn't get released and just continue piling up in chunk updates are gone in the latest snapshots. Finally. Can't wait for 1.8. Performance wise, looks highly promising to me.
For those having issues, have you tried bringing down the chunk rendering distance? The max has been increased in the latest snapshots and so to compare it to 1.7 versions, you're gonna have to bring it way down.
I don't see too many performance issues, my main issue is place blocks sometimes taking anywhere between 5-10 seconds to show up. If you update the block or the area around it, the texture will load but you should not have to update a block to be able to see it immediately upon placement.
I'm also seeing some issues, even if it's just a Snapshot.
I started a new game in the snapshot, and the render distance was set at 10. So I decided to increase the render distance to 30 and got this
I'm in creative because there is literally no ground under me. the ground's not invisible.
So, after this happened I decided to change the render distance back down to 10 and a number of other issues started cropping up. I had to quit the game and restart it to clear out the problems.
I know it's a snapshot, but come on, stuff, like what's in the pic, should not happen.

I read somewhere that the update was meant to just to stabilize framerates (so it doesn't go from 20 to 5 every 30 seconds, for example). Is this true?

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

For me the newest snapshots have been SO much more optimized. (Before: 5-10fps, now: 40-60fps)

New puter: fps mostly the same though rendering is much faster especially in amplified.
