I got back home from getting some wood from a far away forest, tether up of horse to a post, and logged off. When I got back on, it disappeared! I looked everywhere for it, but I can not find my diamond armored horse! I tried to see if anyone else had this problem, but failed. Is this a bug in the snapshots, or is it a one time glitch?
EDIT: MORE PROBLEMS
So I was off adventuring on my trusty mule to complete a map, then I decide to log off for the day. When I got back online, my mule was gone. I was still riding it, about two thousand blocks from home.
If you don't want entities to despawn, you must name them with a name tag. It's the first thing you're supposed to do if you were to be wanting to own an animal, especially a horse. Please, use more caution next time.
On the other hand, it could be a bug. After all, they are snapshots. Really, you shouldn't be using snapshots if you don't want risks of losing anything, they're for testing only.
Horses do not despawn, ever (same for villagers, as many people also seem to think), or other passive mobs. Most likely, I suspect a very old and still unfixed bug; it even kills horses in newly generated chunks (I often see them dying as I fly around in test worlds, or find horses with leather on the ground nearby because one or two suffocated for no apparent reason, other than standing next to a wall, but not actually inside of it).

It doesn't matter if you name them, it's a bug. I had two horses disapear and they were both named. It happens if you log out while riding it or if you are standing close to the horse when logging out. Always jump off the horse and stand a few blocks away from it when you log out until this bug has been fixed.
I won't be depending too much upon leads until/unless they are fixed. They still break when re-entering a chunk and allow horses to wander, so my horse corral on the server has a double wall around the actual pen in case they glitch out somehow.
I've also had a horse literally vanish from the server along with its lead. I had attached the horse to a post and started to enter a cave 3-4 blocks away, when the server crashed. It hadn't been there more than 30 seconds and wasn't anywhere in the area when we logged back on. After that experience I don't use leads to hold horses in place unless I have to-- we built small holding stalls at any bases where horses are used, instead of just having hitch posts. I've heard of the bug where they disappear if you log out while riding them, but not this one.
I think the server saves the world file every thirty seconds or so, after it crashed and you logged in again, it was back in time and you were still on the horse. I think the bug is happening when a horse and a player share the same block space on log in, then the horse gets deleted.
Yeah, now that I think about it, the time inbetween my dismounting the horse and the server crashing was probably brief enough to indicate that it was this same bug.
In any case, I'm now extra super careful with my good horses on multiplayer.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
